  1. From here to there: a good show on Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda Resigns From Slashdot · · Score: 1

You played a large part in keeping the FLOSS/open culture flame alive and the world is better for it.

    Thank you, CmdrTaco.

  2. Re:Real Open Source on Second Life To Open Source Server Code · · Score: 1

You're closer to this than I am, but it's my understanding that new proprietary things like the voice client aren't in the GPL'ed release and that you don't have even anon access to the source repository. This is what I refer to as out of sync and being thrown over the wall.

It's interesting that you're having a good experience with them, though. Do you think LL is going to get a point where the community has more of a role in an open source fashion than it does currently?

OpenSim is hosted on OPENsecondlife.org (not LIBsecondlife.org), so it was just a typo of the URL.

A private source repository and the occasional tarball is what I could call throwing it over the wall.

Don't worry, the market will soon sort that out.

  6. Real Open Source on Second Life To Open Source Server Code · · Score: 5, Informative

The Second Life open client code is already out of sync with the production code because Linden Lab just threw it over the wall and then went on happily producing private versions of their software.

Instead of waiting for them to do the same with the server, sidestep them altogether with libsecondlife.org's OpenSim or pick a new platform altogether from the growing list of real open source projects: Open Croquet, Ogoglio.com (my project), or Verse.

  7. Re:Fan created Firefly episodes? on Independents Push For Second Firefly Season · · Score: 1

Most studio produced shows are bad, so perhaps we shouldn't throw out the baby with the bath water? Star Trek:TOS is bad, but in exactly the same ways as the original series.

Firefly isn't exactly Shakespeare, and if enough unemployed English majors and underemployed film geeks came together, I'm certain that it could be as entertaining and beautiful as the original.

  8. Fan created Firefly episodes? on Independents Push For Second Firefly Season · · Score: 1

Fans can make new episodes with their home gear and dedication, right?

Trekkies are producing new "original series" episodes, so why wait for a studio to pick up on Firefly?

  9. Advertisements to the right, please on RSS Wins, Signals Atom's Death Toll? · · Score: 2, Informative

I'm all for ads on Slashdot, but could we keep them in the sub-section known as "Advertisements"?

Not only is this article factually incorrect, but it smacks of paid placement. If the Slashdot folks didn't get paid for this post, perhaps they should evaluate why they just gave away a bit of their brand value to pump one side of a religious war.

Seriously take a look at what Avalon and Aqua provide and tell me that what you're demonstrating is even in the same ballpark in terms of encouraging good design and sophistication of graphics capabilities.

Your fonts are chunky, you don't seem to have alpha blending, and your layout engine seems to ignore everything we've learned about 2.5D design in the last decade.

WIll you get there? I don't know. Are you there now? Not even close.

I am all for researching new toolkit approaches (really), but don't waste time trying to beat groups with many more resources than you by playing their game.

    Try a new game.
