Don't we already have a version of this with the "Transportation Worker Identification Credential" (TWIC)? http://www.tsa.gov/what_we_do/layers/twic/index.shtm
It has everything this ID card asks for, including the fingerprints.
Red or white phosphorous is stored under water because they burn when they dry out and come into contact with air. If the story is correct, that may be what the substance was.
The Lisa technology was certainly eventually eclipsed by the Macintosh... but, those of us old enough to remember know that even after the Mac took off, you needed a Lisa to write applications for it. A Lisa, 5 meg ProFile, and developers kit.
So you see, the Lisa was no flop. It was the beginning of the "Macintosh Way", much in the way that Henry Fords "tin lizzie" was the first mass produced auto.
Think about it. For those people considering buying a PeeCee...
Feature for feature, from the 17" CRT to the G4 proc, 40g HD, USB, FireWire, ethernet, AirPort, and finally OS X... there is no better value on the market right now!
$1099 for a desktop *nix box is huge, and just what Apple needs to lure disaffected wintel users to the Mac platform.
I'm using OS 10.1.4 on a G3/400 iMac (2001) and I have to tell you that it rocks! If 10.2 offers better performance than what I'm getting now, I'll be very happy...
However... to make it do so, I bumped the RAM to 1gig and replaced the 10gig HD with a 120gig Western Digital 7200rpm drive. Maxing out the RAM and replacing the HD with a 7200rpm one made a _WORLD_ of difference in boot time as well as application performance.
For those that whine that their G3's and older G4's won't be 'fast enough', I offer that if you tweek them a bit, you will see performance that will make you smile. It's the best money I've spent yet.
The second part of this Cringely column details the "Microsoft security fix", which includes 'embracing and extending' TCP/IP with a propriatary stack.
We don't here a lot about Linux being used by the Gov't., except for the few obvious ones in the last year or so...I forget, but wasn't it an army web server or something?
Nope. The army server that was hacked was a Micro$oft IIS server. It was replaced by an Apple G4 running Mac OS and WebSTAR.
Well, if my family included someone as uber-wealthy as BillG, my first choice would be the mega-cool PowerMac G4 with the Apple Cinema Display loaded with all the goodies including 1.5gigs of memory.
I'd partition the 27 gig drive for Mac OS 9, OS X, and LinuxPPC (maybe a couple of others).
But since I'm a mere mortal and my family isn't as flush as Bill, I'd settle for an iMac DV SE with a half a gig of RAM.
After all... there's no reason to be greedy, right?
His plan was that Epcot would be run by Imagineers and Disney executives, not elected representatives. He probably feared that the all-too-human inhabitants would ruin his technology.
Wouldn't it be better to use technology to let the machine tell the supplier when the machine is getting low on product so they know to come and fill it?
If they did this, they wouldn't need to adjust the price for the weather.

I grew up watching the original Mister Wizard in the 50's and 60's, and credit him with my interest and my career in science.
Goodby old friend.
First, the Baltimore Harbor...
Next, Annapolis?!?
Lots of boat-folk there who would love on-water wireless while docked in the harbor.

Panther can run on a 400 MHz G3 with 192 MB RAM.

I hope so. I've got two 400 MHz iMacs, tho both of them have a gig of RAM each.
A G5?? Someday....
and teach them about the MAC as opposed to the other way around
Once and for all.... it's "Mac" as in "Macintosh", not "MAC" as in "Media Access Control".
Geeze.....

Don't diss the Lisa. She was the very first Mac.
How many seconds do you think it took for us to smoke that thing?

For a beta project, I'd say that the mac.com webmail product is pretty darn good.
One thing I'd like to see is the ability to 'bounce' a message the way I can do from mail.app
Bouncing is a great way to fight back on the occasional spam that gets thru.

My first Nutscrape was 1.1n
Of course, it was NCSA Mosaic before it morphed into Nutscrape.
I'd place my money on WWDC (in May I believe).
Correction.... All of the members of Metalica are putzes.
They are money grubbing a**holes that deserve to wither and fade away from the music scene.
I, for one, will never buy anything they record again. Period.

And he would have been right.

Why can't these bozos 'get it'?

What a dumb idea....
