  1. Smartphone: the perfect spy tool. on Microsoft Unveils Nokia 215, a $29 Phone With Internet Access · · Score: 1

It's great to hear iOS and Android fan club members deciding for me what market I'm in. There will always be a market segment with highly skilled techies / hackers who prefer to carry around a phone that has superior battery life and superior quality calls as opposed to one that is running a platform highly targeted by malicious parties for its ease of hackability. All that ram and storage is a great place to hide things. It's a much more difficult proposition to carry out the types of attacks seen today on modern smartphones on a phone such as the Nokia 215. I am so glad Microsoft has been willing to continue produce the series 40/30 line of feature phones. Keep it up

  2. All the recent media hype on how manufacturers are "hardening" their devices is a joke. Of course they're going to continue to let "approved" entities spy on you. We'll start seeing devices built on an open platform running community developed OSS in the next couple of years..

By the time the technology is productized and delivered to the consumer in the US it's going to be some bastardized architecture that delivers "just good enough" service. Telecom is not in the business of delivering more value for less money, so expect the added benefits you get to be proportional to the additional amount consumers will be paying.

Maybe LTO the spec will be superseded and taken over by a next gen cartridge technology, but the medium is still cheaper than disk today. This is going to change in 10-20 years, but you're still going to have legacy systems sticking around after that for 10 years. Today, for keeping petabytes of data secure/resilient long term tape is the cheaper solution.

That's simply not correct. You're talking about China's official exports to the US, which undergo at least *some* routine scrutiny v.s. direct from Joe Blo somewhere doing individual shipments via mail. People can claim these are the same, and I'm sure many do. That type of reasoning doesn't do well in say for example ... the sciences ... where preciseness is usually a factor in making decisions.

These types of "deals" are always some type of trade-off. How much is your time worth? Go with a tried and true distributor and reputable seller off amazon. If you can't afford something at the normal asking price to the point your are willing to dabble with nefarious entities from China, then maybe you should wait and save up for when you can ... or don't and convince yourself you got a great deal from "someone" in China.

These allegations are of no surprise to those of us who have been customers of these companies for years now. They all do this. To think that a company like verizon or at&t doesn't participate in this is silly.
