  1. This happened three or four years ago too. I thought lastpass was great until that. I shut my account down immediately. They had a lot going for them, but security wasn't one of them.

This is my understanding as well. I had not really paid much attention to it until this past week when it was mentioned at work. Since we are still working with older releases of the major distros it hasn't come up. Last night I read up on the topic and was disturbed with what I found with respect to Linus's calling out of one of systemd's prime movers for some blatant ignoring of kernel development etiquette. I think systemd does introduce some good things as well as some not so good. None of that should matter in the long run if improvements / bug fixes are handled properly. I think the systemd maintainers are well aware that they are on thin ice with the community, so we should hopefully already be seeing improvements.

I think we've seen what no regulation gets us. Product/service stagnation, price fixing, lobbies for legislation that doesn't benefit the consumer, etc. Let's try something different. It may not be perfect, but giving these companies carte blanche is just going to result in higher profits for the shareholders and fewer/worse choices for consumers. It would be great if we had truly free market rules in play, but that is not the case in the USA where law makers are practically on the payroll of the companies lobbying for legislation that favors them and stifles competition.

+1 for simplicity. Maybe version control system clients in and of themselves are too complex for the tech writer / doc person. Have them dump their latest changes to a drive/dropbox/folder and use automation to handle getting them into the proper place in source control.

  13. Solve it. Don't patch it. on Ask Slashdot: Version Control For Non-Developers? · · Score: 1

Sounds like the underlying problem is poor planning / lack of communication / clear guidlines for developers to follow so they are not working against each other. Fix these problems with the existing solution. Don't add another layer that only one person uses / understands for doing their work. That approach definitely works for the individual but multiply this for every team member who (doesn't like/is confused by) the existing solution and you've got a much more significant devops problem. Additionally bringing on new team members and getting them to be productive will take much less time if the root of the problem is resolved.

What is the probability that the device would be as "awesome" as the group behind kickstarter marketing campaign says? They don't identify any particular manufacturers or vendors for who will be mass producing this thing. Doesn't that matter? Are they just going to go with the cheapest bidder, or are they targeting a particular vendor that is known for manufacturing high quality products. Seems like any kickstarter campaign should be including that at the top along with the other vapor, so people deciding whether to fund have a real idea of what/who they're funding.
