all the things you mention could be solveble by picking the right hardware. Im no current on slick barebones, but ask the right geek and hell come up with one. Including a hardware powersave feature, linux compatible.
I say its a valid business opportunity for SCO in the near future..

Have you ever asked a MAC user to use Windows? His reply will be somewhat like: Are you NUTS? What are the odds you think, that this Apple user will _write_a_driver_?
This is a BIG problem in the Apple community STILL. It could be easely fixed by Apple too... Instead of praying that BillyG will do it one day.
"Your OS of choice doesn't support the Mac filesystem. That is Apple's fault how, exactly?"
It aint Apple FAULT, its Apples FLAW. If Bill Gates doesnt like AppleFS, apple _could_ be smart, and help its _loyal_ _paying_ _customers_ with a very real problem.
Have you ever wished Apples design for the OS and the Apps would trickle down to "other" osses?
I have.
Well Ephpod just did it. Its software is beautifull, and simple to use, as is the marvelous iPod.
It installed in 5 minutes, windows2k has build in IEEE 1394 (firewire) support, so plug in your el-cheapo Firewire PCI card, reboot, install Eph and bobsyourunlce.
Some feats on the iPod: - Best formfactor for HD mp3 players, it actually fits in a breast pocket. - Stores 10GIG - Transfers at firewire blazing speed
The only drawback is the godawful high price
I take no care in comments that apple _should_ release for other OSses, their apps, their hardware their choice.
A different "stink" is the lack of Macdrive support for other OSses. Whereas Apps and special hardware are their own deal, the lack of support for mac disk formats is another. In the best interest of Apple buyers, and people sharing data with them, it is _needed_ to buy third party stuff like MacOpener for windows from dataviz. Now THATS reason number one for oldschool MacFreaks to eventually switch;their customers run windows, and are tired of converting files and disks. This is the stupidist thing from Apple since quicktime.
When are we getting linux mp3 players that are cheap and dont suck?
My point is, most of our actions are done in the public sphere, and can be observed by ANY casual observer. In theory, what anyone does in a public space, cannot be private by definition. Is it bad that people track you for your personal buying habits?
I dont think so, because I _could_ have spotted you buying it anyway.
Now, the problem is in WHO can see that data. F.E. if the governement or anyone really, has data on me, Id sure want to know what. So I should be granted access to that data. If only to correct errors made.
"Information is power"
It sure is. Just ask the MPAA.
Now who should have this power? Everyone. That way we can garantee supervising the supervisors.
So.. Privacy doesnt really exists, but that does not scare me. Information exists, and what scares me if the powers have infomation, that the public has no access too. That way the balance is off.
"This is a common fallacy. No space-based expatration system is going to ship enough people off this planet to make the slightest bit of difference. There are 250,000 new people on this planet, ever single day."
IMHO Space is THE survivor enviroment for HUMANKIND. No its not gonna house every new baby born, but it doesnt need to.
I just like to know we have a backup solution in case we have a harddisk crash. Like a nuke terrorist attack or something.
I think in the long run, the freedom and openness and public domain ownage (them, the voters!) should be your points to stress, if you yell "My software will run governments cheaper!" NOONE will believe you.
Education cost is short term hype nonsense, make it look 90% the same (and all distro do) and just about everyone will understand what to do. Humankind is amazingly adaptive, as shown by every new GUI re-invention from redmond that goes by w/o re-training all the workforce.
FREEDOM is a cost saver.
That is true in Holland with some cable cos, it should be illegal or at least desceptive to advertise "Internet connections" whilst in reality it is not two-way, as it should be defined, but one way. As in the zen question "what IS a server?"
"or having uplink speed restrictions."
There are good technical reasons for "A"DSL (Asynchronos Digital Subscriber Line), for example the problem that arises when all last mile connections come together at the local area uplink, you get extra interference from the big bundle of cabling.
SDSL (Synchronous) is rather new and in pilot at a lot of telco's, and perhaps somehwere available.
As for telcos aiming for a high bundle of money for a multiple number of services, that just makes economic sense.
If you invest once, but spread the payback over multple services, you keep investment low, while cashflow maximal.
It should in the long run be profitable for customers too, as for 500USD, Id say in Holand 250EU for domestic clients, and 500EU for Bussinesses would be a fair target.

I have to wonder, what the result would have been, WITHOUT the software, and just this one action.
I think it would be pretty much the same as WITH filter.

"And by the way, how does it feel to want/have a cool device that is better supported on some other OS than your OS of choice?"
/Dread
Completely normal, actually. It has been that way since I first played with Dos 2, Apple 5, and minix.
It does not however mean, that AppleFS non-support in the windows world is any less a real (Apple customers!) problem
Gr
ps I own about 4 working Macs, run Win98, 2k AND XP, and several flavours of linux all at home.
I probably used quicktime when you were in diapers.

Quicktimes problem is the same as AppleFS: not interoperable.

Not by a long shot, but still.. Uploading two cd's, about 100Megs just now took 40 seconds...

Fine nice and dandy.

The real problem is of course not that they limit yur useage, it is that they do advertise the opposite: unlimited Internet Access!
- First off, a "fair use" limit *is* a limit
- Second blocking ports =! Internet, read the IP specs.
So sell it as a "Almost-Internet" "Almost-Unlimited", but nobody does.
Sue em, I say.
