by suing SCO. - Copyright violations of current kernel developers. - Extorion of businesses using foney copyright claims. - Membership of a criminal organisation, aimed at making extortion money, this includes SUN, MS, and other licencees of alleged "derivatives". - Ransacking the commons in a destructive way (ok there SHOULD be a law against that) - Inflating stockprices with false information with the intent to profit.
I propose we start a fund, treasured by FSF, spokon by RMS. We then approach several law firms, and let them bid for a piece of the pie we will no doubt win. (Look under the tablecloth guys! Check who owns SCO shares)
I sense a huge hole in the legal market here... Lets make money! Ill buy (err I mean deposit) money in such fund! Lots!/Dread

I understand why you say this. This is my feeling too for home use. Specs rule. However my CEO at work would not agree, he demands proper HW support.
And not without reason, nothing prevents a hardware vendor to stop playing nice with linux home users.
Imagine us (a nix based DB software vendor) offering a solution based on linux, including HCL (as current) but a crucial HW vendor dropping its support...
This *IS* the problem. More companies should openly state there *dedication* to the platform, a-la IBM, Novell etc. ATI and the others, should make *open source* drivers avail, to let us hack em into shape. If needed. I cant professionally settle for any less. Well that, or their openly stated dedication (and then if they insist, for crying out load keep the drivers closed, Ill bitch if they wont work!)
- Recently purchased a Radeon 9700, on account that drivers for linux were listed on vendors webpage. - Two weeks later my order is there, I go to the website, no show... - I log in to slashdot to find out my vendor is dropping its references to, and aid of (if there ever was such a thing) to third party driver developers...
Im inclined to ship the card back, but it really is nice for UR2 and upcoming HL2 in the Other OS, so I didnt.. (im weak)
For the longest time I have been listing to the faint mumblings of the once so-called PowerPC Reference Platform. I for one, would be seriously interested in another platform besides Intel (wintel) where the hardware specs are as open as possible.
- Slower clocked RISC chips seem still to outperform the Intel line, although RISC perhaps is an outdated acronym. - Couple this with a basically organically grown Intel MoBo based PC, with archaic Need To Have's like the floppy disk. - Add to this a brilliant company (Apple) constantly being marginalized by having an 'incompatible' plaform. (Apple does not want apple clones, but they sure would want to profit from the techno push the PC plaform gives to hardware)
It could end up in a faster evolving hardware platform, where software (think linux) and hardware (like Prep) evolve at the same speed (think Edsgar Dijkstra)
its about bad business practices, where companies make deals with Hardware vendors about USING technology in such a way that competition gets stifled, and they ARE getting away with it...
Rescue CD's without partition options are just that, and they suck. There outta be a LAW against them! And Im saying this as a professional multi OS licenced system engineer, NOT as a home linux zealot (which I am too, but there the solution is easy)

Bill Gates On Linux

· Score: 1
The interviewer did this for the papperazi in the USA? Wow. Im seriously impressed. Some quality newspaper will snap this undoublty young person up soon. Why? - He got to ask unpopular, smart questions to BillG, a feat I havent yet seen dony by Slashdot f.e. - He persists, even if Bill gives him a run around. - He holds his style (Nobody used OS/2, will linux run MS)
Bill G is right when he sais: "And yeah, we, on educational bids, we will meet competition. That's considered healthy pro-competitive behavior."
That means Bill gives software away for free BECAUSE OF COMPETITION! That probably means they get their revenue on that from SUPPORT! (Or they are undercutting potential competition, which is abuse of monopoly, and they are cleary not doing that anymore he sais) Did Bill sniff some clue glue?
(And apparently Linux isnt competition in the business market, so one has to ponder what the hell these business managers are thinking, if the education market prooves it can be done, isnt the business paying too much?)/Dread
TO all who recently bought ATI onm behalf of there being linux support (I did, a 9700 cuz there was a link to a driver ON THE ATI PAGES!):
Send a polite email ASKING for 'commitment' regarding the linux platform in respect of your newly purchased ATI product. Point to them you bought it, because they had 'links to supported drivers before, but now you cannot find them anymore (on their site)'
Tell them you will otherwise be forced to not buy anymore wonderfull ATI products, and also unfortunaly have to send your recently purchased product back (only if you are willing to do just that)
Obviously your local LUG will have to be advised to 'not use ATI' anymore too.
Also, with only two players in the market, and them being evil, and more evil, dont expect that your buying boycott will actually bother them./Dread

I think you step on two thoughts here: one, building a PVR is something a USER can do. (True, but not for the cost of a TIVO, unless one is a hacker of sorts, which defeats the purpose of a simple appliance)
Two, It aint economical because of the power req. But this one holds only true to businesses IMHO. For some reason, I cannot imagine a 16 y/o hacker to be worried about wattage.
The problem could be solved by a OS business selling TIVO services... Thats what I ment really.
to destroy Linux...

I see some people mention that MS is doing this in a response to the threats of SCO.
I think it is quite the contrary (or so my tinfoil hat told me).
This just seems too coincidental with the "Using Linux could mean legal fees" SCO campaign.
Now we have a *real* alternative if we worry about vague "legal fees", just use MS!
