I'm a dinosaur. I'm a damn good web coder. I used to love writing clean code. I loved the challange of reproducing what the design people came up with using the least amount of resourses.

Marketing sucked the joy out of my work. I'd tell my boss "Look, it's fast and easy to use, and it looks the same in all browsers!" and he'd say "So? It needs more animations!"

People like me are being replaced with flash monkeys and go tards with dreamweaver.People who can't write a style sheet by hand, or create simple javascripts.

And look at the results! Sites that crash my browser, sites where I can't find any real content. Who the hell thinks a serious b to b site should be loaded down with flash? Why use java for ad banners?

I doubt most non tech savy users on dial up connections are slogging through this crap.

The internet is becoming less and less useful. And we have marketing weenies to thank.

When I got married my husband gave me a Ducati Monster instead of a diamond ring. That's a gift we can both enjoy!

  7. Re:Useless ratings? on Lieberman Pleased With Video Game Ratings · · Score: 1

I don't think most parents pay attention to the ratings, this is the companys attempt to cover theor own asses.

Therein lies the problem. Parents will buy little johnny what ever he wants to shut him up with out actually looking into what it is (Hell, that would mean paying attention to the kid). Later, when mom and dad find out what GTA is really like they freak, and start demanding laws to protect the kids.

I suppose as long as the games are rated the companys making them can say that they tried, which would prevent people from banning them outright, which is what the parents will puch for next.

Wake up morons, TV and the internet can't raise your kids. Be a @#$%& parent instead or suffer the consquences.

Which is why they should require conformation for their lists. They also shouldn't be allowed to sell or share with other sites with out you knowing about it. A little ethical behavior now could save them a world of pain later.

But I doubt that's going to happen. The people trying to make the las don't understand the medium, so how can they make up good laws? It would be like asking a cave man to pen all out modern traffic laws!

Until then I'm doing everything I can to block them, I used to get about 300 a day, now I get maybe 10 a week.

It's gone from being annoying to making me homicidal. They are stealing from me, IMHO.

When I want a flathose, bigger boobs and horney teens gettiing it on with lawn furnature, I can find it on my own.

The spammers like to claim that all the email they send out is opted in for. Where this true children wouldn't be getting this stuff.

The problem is that spammers lie. I know I never asked to recieve ads for child porn, yet I get it. And I can't make it stop.

Spammers must be forced to post real contact info, which I don't think is going to happen.

My 14 year old neighbor is always coming over here to use the computer, work on her website and use our high speed connection. She is very upset by porn spam. She isn't requesting this stuff either.

I think the only thing to to is make legit businesses see how much spam hurts them. I get email from 4 or 5 companys that I actually requested and want. Most of the time I don't get these mails becuse of the strict spam filtering I have had to use to stop the 300+ messages a day I was getting. If big business gets pissed then perhaps we will see some action.

I'd rather be allowed to hunt and kill spammers, but that's me.

  10. Re:I read it as more "de minimis non curat lex" on Copy Protection a Crime Against Humanity · · Score: 1

Most of the people I know in the music industry are against this sort of thing. Small record companies depent on file sharing to get the buzz going about band that would never get any kind of airplay on a comercial radio station. And since file sharing started, their sales are up.

Most of the mp3s I have I have ripped myself from cd's I bought. I have about 2000 cds. THe rest are either out of print, stuff I own on non cd formats already and want to have on my computer, and tracks legaly aquired from other sourse.

The big record companys need to learn that people don't want the crap they are selling, that's why their sales are down. Thanks to the internet people can sample an entire world of music. Local bands can reach more people than ever. And when you buy a cd from Joe Musician's website, you know Joe will actually see more than a few pennies per sale.

The kind of copy protection they are pushing is going to hurt the independants. I assume this sort of encoding will cost.

I have bought lots of music over the past 25 years, tapes, albums, cds whatever. Not to mention movies on Beta, VHS, Laser Disk, and DVD. I don't mind paying for content, but I will not be buying anymore if this persists. I don't want to have to buy a new cd player or dvd player everytime some kid cracks the latest halfassed attempt at copy protection.

I resent this. They are treating the customer like a criminal, and most people will take it. Sad.

There seems to be no shortage of it workers here in NYC. But finding one who isn't dumber than dirt is the problem. It seems that anyone with a pulse can get an MCSE (in a class of 12, only I had worked in mis before), so the market is flooded with microdorks who wouldn't know a DOS prompt if it bit them in the butt.

On the up side, the people with real skills can make real money with out wearing a suit. The problem is getting the job in the first place. With so many morons fighting for you job, coupled with the fact that much hiring is done by HR people who know zip about computers...

  12. Village Voice fails to get it on Village Voice on Voices From The Hellmouth · · Score: 5

Once again the voice misses the point.

First, they use this as an excuse to pick on white males. It seems to me that they didn't actually read the Hellmouth section or the would have seen that there were many comments from non-white males. Last time I checked I was not one of those.

Also, they seemed to miss what was happeneing. We are not upset because were were simply picked on. If it had been just name calling it wouldn't have been a big deal.

But let's fact it, it never stopped at simple taunting. Most of the people (myself included) indured far more than that. We were physicly assulted, spit on and in some cases sexually harrased.

We aren't looking for ppl to feel sorry for us, that part of my life is over and I'm over it. I just hope that someone might sit up and listen the next time a kid is beaten up for being different, rather than just ignoring it the way most school officals do now.

  13. Re:Well paid... on The Dark Side of IT · · Score: 1

I've often thought an IT union would be a good idea. Not only will it protect us from being over worked by employers, but it will protect us from ourselves.

I'm pretty lucky, I had a series of bad jobs untill now. But many others are getting fucked over by their employers. My husband works at least 9 to 12 hours a day, does the work of 3 people and get's nothing but shit from his boss. He rarely has time for lunch or even bathroom breaks. Complain? You can't complain, there are a dozen others lined up to take your job who are even more desprate than you.

I had the same thing for a while. You just have to keep job hopping til you find a good job. Problem is there are few of those out there.

The problem seems to be most of us work for people who have NO CLUE what we do. To the user "If it's on the computer it's magic". They don't understand the work involved in getting our jobs done so they tend to over burden us.

Add to that the fact that most of the IT people I know tend to be obsessive hard working types who will not to allow themselves to fail at any cost. We will kill ourselves before we admit defeat.

To be honest, I need the pressure. I thrive on it. It's like a drug to me. Everyone I know is like that.

    Save me from myself!!
