Downloadable Origami Motorcycles

gse writes "This is too cool. Yamaha has a series of very realistic origami motorcycles, freely downloadable from their website. There's also a cool little article on how the models are made. I knew the office dyesub would come in handy someday!"

    "origami" means something like "folded paper". The Yamaha models are made by cutting and pasting paper, not folding. So they're not origami.

      There's a parallel situation with those old Kodak film scanners that were designed for the high speed production of Photo CDs - by modern standards they're really crappy, but you still see 'em on eBay for 6 times the cost of a Nikon Coolscan V.

      Dye Sublimation still has plus points. Mainly its fade resistant, 100% waterproof and the pictures look smoother. Those new small Canon CP200 photo printers are dye sublimation printers.

      seppuku is simply ritual suicide; it only takes one person to make it happen.

      I really hope you didn't mean this seriously. I can't stand when someone throws out a line like this. "Oh, but the child will get in trouble if he has this...." Obviously some will, some won't. The same as if the kid had a car. Granted, a motorcycle is more dangerous than a car to operate, but some kids can handle it, some can't. It's up to the parents and kid to decide.

      Actually, the proper way to do it would involve being in a kneeling position, where one would cut two of the three sides of a triangle into one's stomach (across then up and to the center) while one's second would use one's sword to chop off one's head, leaving just a thin bit of skin to hold the head onto the body.

      But you don't have to do it that way, it's just the traditional way it was once done.

      Seppuku means the same thing, but with Chinese morphemes (but not necessarily from China). setsu = belly, fuku = stomach. They're synonyms. I can't think of a seppuku/harakiri in history that wasn't done by a direct or indirect order. For example, during the battle of Okinawa, many civilians committed suicide when the allied forces were invading because their education told them that death was preferable over becoming a POW.

      This almost happened to me last christmas.

      I had been asking for a motorcycle desperately. I'd gone through, done all the economics: how much the motorcycle would cost, licensing, insurance, effect it would have taking me off the normal insurance policy, everything, and it turned out to be just about the same for me to borrow one of my parents cars as for them to buy me a motorcycle.

      Christmas morning: "I think you'll love your present!" Pick it up, small box, might be the keys *hopinghopinghoping*

      Opened it: it was a toy motorcycle, that would run 3 feet then do a flip...

      That's allright, though. I'll get them back, someday, when it comes time to choose a retirement home for them...

      I bought a plastic kit from Tamiya. They're aren't quite the right model, but you can tailor them to look like yours quite easily. Mines an '87 Hurricane.

      The Yamaha papercraft site has been around for years, and I've been making these models ever since the first was up. Strangely, I was about to google for the Yamaha site a moment ago to see if they've put up any new models recently, and in my other window I see this /. article.

      As an owner of a 1998 VMax, I would say you are safer on a CBR than the VMax. It will beat a CBR 600 in a drag race. And the power is amazing. But it's huge and heavy and doesn't handle nearly as well. Also you can't stop as fast. I think it's a dangerous bike, in the wrong hands. It has so much power and the rest of the bike isn't good enough to deal with it unless you have a long road with no curves. I would still recommend owning one. The acceleration is AWESOME!

      My husband did the smart thing we we got married, got me a bike of my own.

      Now I'm so hooked that even after an accident that left me unable to walk for 2 months the first thing I did when I could afford it was to get a new bike.

      I wish I could find a model of my Triumph, paper or otherwise.

      This kind of paper artwork is somewhat popular in Japan.
      Basically, if you can make or get a 3d model of something, assembling a paper model if it isn't that hard to do. There's even software for this.

      Check out their gallery for more examples.

      There are also models of starships from Homeworld, Babylon 5, Star Wars and Star Trek here.

      Of course, paper models by no means are limited to static sculptures. My girlfriend got me one of these and it was remarkably simple to assemble, yet very impressive.
      Very neat stuff.

      I really wish they used vector formats instead of Jpeg's though (SVG anyone?). Then you could scale them as needed without messing them up.

    Have a look at 'Paper Models International'. I've been buying models from them occasionally for over ten years, and they've got some amazing things in the catalog.

    Check out the JS Schrieber models of the Chartre Cathedral, and the first German locomotive, "Der Adler". The detail is fantastic.

      The current Hyundai Coupe in GB is an *amazing* car. Goes like a b*stard, has a wonderful gear shift, and the air con rocks as well, although it does drink a lot juice, and trying to overtake with full air con blowing is quite interesting. They're damn expensive though....

      It is surprising how few decent bike exhaust samples there are on the www, the Micron page was about all I could find. Mind you, who am I to talk, my XTZ750 still has the original and rather quiet can.

      Try the first two Ducati 748 Termignoni links on this page. SILs are made in the same factory as Termis and just rebadged.

      Also a Ducati 748R with Termis at Donnington Park, complete with downshifts into Redgate.

      For my personal favourite listen to this one of the Ducati Desmosedici MotoGP bike. More of the same here.

    As far as I know these have been up for way more than just a year. They certainly did the rounds on a motorcycle mailing list I'm on a few years ago.

    At the time I remember quite a few list members downloaded and tried them but quite a few very shaky paper R1s went to the breakers because these kits are not paper modelling for the beginner or the faint hearted.

    Still, topmarks to Yamaha for doing such a cool thing!

      They've been out for at least three to five years now. I started on my R1 about two years ago.

      And you're right, these models are not for a beginner. I've got appx. 50-60 hours in my R1, and it still needs another 15-30 hours to finish. If you don't know what you are doing, expect to spend 120-150+ hours on one of these things. They are _very_ detailed.

      If you decide to build one, I would recommend that you do the tires sometime in the beginning (after you have done some more simple assemblies for practise). They'll drive you insane later on if you follow the order in the instructions. They take 3+ hours and 4 glue sessions to cut out and assemble (each!), there are hundreds of cuts to make, and they're very finiky. If you don't get everything just right, the tire won't go together correctly.

      Also, if you are careful, you can use wood glue instead of white glue which is a bit more sticky and easier to use.

    I've always been fascinated by origami and paper models. Perhaps that's because I am so very bad at both. Anyway, here's some more paper goodness.

    • Star Trek paper models. There's a fantastically detailed Enterprise 1701 (refit) there.
    • Origami and Math. My calculus teacher in high school had a whole array (pardon the pun) of paper polyhedra.
    • Origami dinosaurs. I love the paper Tyranosaurus. Now if I only had paper Marshall, Will and Holly's to go with these I could play Origami Land of the Lost!

Of course I immediately bent, folded and spindled an old AOL disk. :-) It proudly sits atop my computer, along with my Matchbox Mars Pathfinder rover.     I have a couple of Yamaha synths, and a Yamaha electro-acoustic guitar. I would love one of their saxophones (but I can't play). Their cheap and shitty saxes knock even decent Western-made instruments into a cocked hat, and their good ones - wonderful.

    In origami you cannot use glue and scissors. If you are looking for origamis try Joseph Wu's Origami Page or Origami.com, in those sites you can have a peak in the wonderful world of folding. But those are really nice Paper Craft Models.

      They're cheap, but they certainly aren't crap. My wife drives the begeezus out of her Tiburon, and it's very reliable. Not particularly powerful, but it will scoot when prodded. We're looking at another car, and so far Hyundai is giving the best fit, finish, and size for the dollar, IMO.

    I really don't think a Vmax can be as dangerous as a Honda Supersport (well, sort of) bike; take a look at the Vmax, you won't got fast thru turns and never get that deep into slope as with a lighter and having more HP/kilograms supersport-bike that was designed to do exactly this.
    The most dangerous things are
    1) getting hit by a car (you were overseen) and
    2) hitting something outside the road because you drove to fast into that turn and lost control.
    (OTOH, I drive a Suzuki Hayabusa , he, which is, well, out of any leagues :)) )

    The idea of paper/card models is not really that new. There is a great selection of card models available for purchase or download. The Yamaha models mentioned in this article are very simple compare to professionally designed and printed models. Virtually anything you ask for is out there. Poland is the leader in this hobby. To get an idea of what I'm talking about take a look at some of these links:
    Radom card modeling contest
    Krasnystaw card modeling contest
    Andrzej Halinski: leading publisher of card models
    Card model gallery
    High quality electronically published card models
    More sophisticated models have thousands of parts and are very realistic. A model of USS Saratoga from publisher Fly Model in scale 1:200 has over 3200 parts (that includes couple squadrones of airplanes). Card models are also mostly in large scales (1:33 airplanes, 1:25 vehicles and 1:200 ships) and a whole lot cheaper than plastic models.

    Get some high quality, high weight paper, I attempted making one of these bikes during the summer an normal weigh paper just wasn't good enough for some of the required folding. I think the PDF's say what weight paper works best.

    The types who buy the repli-racers tend (supposition through direct oberservation) to be the ones most easily goaded into hauling ass. The same types assume they can play Valentino Rossi on corners they have no experience with, wearing t-shirts and tennis shoes.

    You avg. V-Max rider likely has at least a black leather jacket on, just to match. The V-Max is the perfect sleeper bike but I agree is definitely not for beginners, but then neither is a CBR600RR.
