They're "independent" only insofar as they'll allow extreme members of both political spectra to rant and rave about... the other side of said spectra.
I cannot believe that anyone would consider Salon to be a "vital source of information"... cripes. It's the same sh*t I get on Fox News, only on the other side of the aisle.
It's not vital. It's not independent. And if it's not attracting enough people who will pay for it... goodbye, and good riddance.
i can't seem to get to customize it. even if i choose the $899 version and click "continue" it tells me that the system has changed and i have to start over.
how, exactly, did this get modded as "insightful?"
how, exactly, do slashdot "moderators" think that a comment saying that bush caused this crash shows any insight into anything but a warped, frustrated person's bizarre ramblings?
(not to mention the fact that NO PRESIDENT OPERATES IN A VACUUM -- THERE IS A CONGRESS THAT HAS TO AGREE WITH ALL OF THIS, AND LAST TIME I CHECKED, THE BUDGETS NASA HAS BEEN WORKING UNDER UP TO NOW HAVE BEEN OK'D BY A DEMOCRATICALLY CONTROLLED SENATE. not to say it's their fault too, just pointing out the absurd logic)

No. At this time, RHAPSODY supports Microsoft Windows. Below are the system requirements for RHAPSODY. * Windows XP, ME, 2000, 98 or NT (4.0, with Service Pack 4 or later required)
It's very evil, what they did to me. They got me hooked, and then used it against me.
"They" didn't get you hooked. You found a service you liked at a price you really liked. You used said product, paid said price... and it's not evil when Apple has to start charging for it because it's causing them to lose money. They don't like to lose money any more than you do.
With this new arrangement, Apple is saying to you "Right, let's keep this relationship going, but let's have you pay for what you're using, and in return, we'll give you some great new stuff that you didn't have before."
You can choose to agree, or disagree. If it's the former, bully for you and hurray for AAPL. If it's the latter... well, there are other free email (web-based) services. You'll have to host your site elsehwere, but iTunes, iPhoto and the other "i"Apps will continue to work just fine -- for free.
once again, we have a story -- this time, from the "gray old lady" of print journalism -- that has little, if any, basis in fact. it's based more on assumption, heresay and generalities.
i used to be a journalist, so i have some idea how the thinking works: reporter is bored with the internet. reporter commits some fallacy (forget the name) whereby what is thought to be true for one's self is therefore thought to be true for all. reporter goes out and finds quotes from "sources" to back up his assumption. reporter writes story. clueless editor (who is usually more out of touch with reality than the reporters are) runs story. readers who trust the validity of the newspaper therefore assume "if it's in the times, it must be true" and...
therefore, what is believed by one reporter is said to be true in general. and it sticks because it came from the new york times.
it's sick, how allegedly independent mainstream journalists can take their biases and make them into news that lots of people across the country just automatically believe to be correct.
in the past few years, i've burned about 20 CDs -- compilations of favorites i already own. i came into the napster thing kinda late, but i got into it right before it was "outlawed"... i downloaded about 20 songs and made a mix.
these 20 songs were (i'm not afraid to admit this) featured in various late-nite TV commercial offers.
now, i'd LOVE to pay for these songs, but right now i'd have to pay time-life music about $2,000 to get 20 songs that i really, really want.
i think i'm more like the typical music listener than the rest of slashdot readers... and i think that if i am willing, tons of other people are as well.
fedex, airborne or UPS? this is so timely because fedex ground fscked up a package delivery to me today -- a very costly fsck-up.
get this: fedex ground had my package on a truck, in chicago, sending it (the package) back to the sender in spokane. it (the package) was mistakenly refused at my local package delivery store -- not to name names, but they offer mailboxes, stamps, packaging, etc.... i don't want to unfairly slander any company, you see.
anyway. that package is refused. it's in a truck, sitting in chicago. i call fedex and they tell me they cannot touch the package until it's returned to spokane.
now, mind you, it's HERE IN CHICAGO. i'm HERE IN CHICAGO. but they can't redirect it once it's been refused.
i think the fedex managers ran al gore's recount battle in florida last year.

this is why a well-rounded education is important, at least for undergrad. you need it to get out in the world, to get a job and get some real experience. then worry about focusing those areas of education that at first seem to be irrelevant.
