Along with my co-workers, I write web appplications for very large banks, Many times I have been the lone wolf in argueing for compatiblity with NS4 and Mozilla/NS6+ and have made some progress. But since many of the developers only use IE, IE only code creeps into many places and they can testy when they are "forced" to make it work elsewhere.
Unless the customer specifies compatability, it is a priority only given lip service by management. Even worse, the other browsers are off the map.
If the sponsered story was a bunch of FUD or a bad product, the./'ers will totally rip on it, we will all get an idea of what the real deal is and Slashdot will get the sponser's money. If it story is something good, more folks will know about it and Slashdot will get the sponser's money.
Back in the late 70's I took the only two programming classes our high school had. Everything we did was at an interactive keyboard/printer desk like terminal that was hooked up to a mainframe miles away. When we had free time we could play Star Trek games and other fun stuff. The impression I had was that programming and computers were cool.
When I went away to college I signed right up for the intro progamming class. Then I was hit with the cold reality of standing in line to enter my program into a punch card puncher, then standing in line to run the cards through a validator, then standing in line to put my program into the system and then waiting for hours, or going home and then back to the Computer Center, often several times, to get the output.
All this left me with a "Computing Sux" impression. It wasn't until I discoverd the rapidly exploding internet that I felt that initial engagement with the world of programming and computers in general again. Now I have an MA in history that I'm not using, but enjoying my current job writing things in perl, php and shell.
The average computer user doesn't give a flying fsck about overlapping windows. They maximize all windows all the time and then go down to task bar with the mouse the change between them. Every day I see numerous folks writing e-mail with the message window full screen on a 19" monitor or others browsing web pages full screen with the resolution at 1600x1200. This drives me nuts.
I've never done any business with Egghead, yet I got this notice. This raises a whole bunch of questions - Why am I in their db? How did I get there? Do they have my cc? What other info are they selling about me? How many others are in a similar situation?
RTF is not a "Microsoft format", it is/was a stardard. Like all standards (can you say ASCII?) Microsoft perverted it for their own ends => imcompatability.
While no longer in education, it is clear that MS is preparing to really turn the screws across the board. Yesterday I received in the mail at work a nicely done pamphlet from MS urging me to check all lisences, despite me being a lowly web-programmer. The bulk of it descibed the penalties ($150,000 or more for each program) for non compliance and hinting at investigations. Basically this is a threat that the Microsoft Police are going to come knocking on your door.
A couple years ago I read Scripting News everyday and followed along as Dave touted first RDF and then XML-RPC and Soap. Then he announced how he was going to partner with MS on Soap and how great everything would be. I thought that he been around long enough to know better when he was getting sucked into the heart of the beast and, like many before, he would come out burned, which is the way NYT makes it sound. I became an infrequent reader of Scripting New at about that time.
Other post-NT 5.0 features outlined by Allchin included the unification of Web and Win32 application programming interfaces -- something Microsoft is already working toward...
Kinda scary, they have been working towards.Net for some time. If they succeed, it will be the death of the de-centralized internet as we know it. I don't think they will, but it's going to a rocky ride for us all.
A few months ago I was looking into printing mailing labels and invoices from info already in a mysql db. Yet I was not able to find a decent open-source solution. I ended up writing them out by hand.
The screenshots in the article seemed to be from the first version of evas. This screenshot is of the second version of evas_test, it is about 500K and is hosted on a server with a DSL connection that may be limited to approx. 200kbs. It doesn't do justice to evas_test because things are always moving around and in and out of the display. The first time I saw it I just sat there and said "Wow!"
Heavy handed tactics by half-price are no surprise.
A year ago I signed up with them and my little domain was served just fine. Then in Jan. the site became unaccessible, http/ftp/telnet. I e-mailed them a few times and got no response. When the next billing came around, I stated that I would not pay if the site was down, again no response. After that I figured it was a lost cause, but they still held my domain.
At some point last summer, I hear from them, saying they are going to auction my domain. I responded that was not right. In the exchange that followed half-price took a very heavy tone, demanding that I pay for 3 quarters of hosting. As the site had been down since Jan., I informed them that billing for services not rendered is illegal. I haven't heard from them since.
Long before that I went with a host that had been spoken well of by several slashdot posters, csoft.net .
Mr. M hits the several nails on the head. I will comment on one.
We seem to take it for granted that sex = bad.
This is because there is no shortage of people/institutions that do their best to define sex (and host of other things) as bad. If we buy into that defination, they are well on the way to contolling out sex lives. The logical extension is that those who define/control sex would then have power over the ones who accept that defination. And power is much more valuable than money.
Ever pondered why organized religions are so into defining their beleivers sex lives?
Seeing reports that 7.2 was in Wal-Marts, I barged into the local store on my lunch-hour. Dodging assorted riff-raff filling their carts with the wonderful items that make the United States the nation that it is, I made my way to the electronics section. And there was the Mandrake penquin sitting next to the boxes of Window Me saying, "Pick Me!"
And I was on the verge of doing do when I realized that it could well be the version without the compilers and other good stuff. Nevertheless, inspired by this cultural advance quickly making it's way to Montana, not exactly the most sophisticated place in lower 48, I went back to work and fired up a Cheapbytes order form for the GPL version (includes KDE 2.0, etc). If it wasn't for Wal-Mart I'd probably ended up procrastinating for a couple more weeks,
If MS was able to get the Merc folks to cooperate, what about the poobahs of other languages? Have they been working on.net ports and we haven't heard about it because of NDA's. Were they approached?

I worked on a project for American Express that, for the bulk of it's life cycle, used MySql.

Right wing politics typically tries to expand the power of law enforcement to step on those they don't like in the name of public safety.

I guess that makes you one of the four happy IE 2 users.
