  1. Re:OT: Lars on Senate Judiciary Committee On Digital Music · · Score: 1

True... but I've heard some of the others speak (on MTV and VH1, when I still watched TV), and they're no slouches either. Hettfield seems fairly at ease with public speaking. Ja, if one wants to spin the "it's about the music" angle a band member is perfect---but allowing them to speak introduces an uncertain element. (i.e., pr spin people would be a lot happier speaking for them, avoiding deviations from the script and, "He said, what?!?!" crisis.)

If you want upgradability, buy a G4. Basic G4 towers start at $1599 and are quite expandable.

In one of its catalogs, font haus T.26 set its type samples using spam instead of the standard "Lorem ipsum dolorem..." It was really quite amusing, as one got some great visual dichotomy by pairing, say, a nice enlightment style handwriting font with pron spam.

Anyone else have good uses for spam? It's not tangible, so lining the bird cage, wrapping fish, making hats for monkeys, etc. won't work.

Actually, I've seen something similar done but only for a different purpose. Near where I'm originally from, there's a large anhydrous amonia dump. They used to have a problem with birds crappings all over the tanks and facilities, so they installed a motion activated propane noise gun to scare the bejesus out of any bird that ventures by. The system is actually quite effective, and quite loud: you can hear a soft thud from several miles away. Still, that's just one little piece of drill stem... I'd love to hear/feel/see one of these babies played.

Why? First and foremost, you must understand that I'm a Mac user so the stereotypical knee-jerk reaction should be, "Kill Windows!". But it's not.

Think: deploying MacOS X on Intel is going to add a helluva-lot-a bloat to the OS. If it's just run on Apple hardware, you have, maybe 10-20 different configurations to support on release with only a few more added each year for legacy support. With former Windows machines... you've got a cocktail of hardware that is accustomed to run under a kludged-up OS: Win-32.

Now, I am not a programmer--graphic designer and web designer, instead--, but I know the majority of Slashdotters are. So, I ask you: Is this a legitimate problem? How much cleaner/faster/stabler would Linux be if it's machine support was purposely limited to a specific series of hardware from a single vendor?

PageMaker, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. are all priced at points which are completely fair within their target markets -- I can easily recoup the cost of a Photoshop license by working for six hours for a client. No biggie, really. (Okay, PageMaker is overpriced as its fsckin' awful compared to Quark. And that's just sad because Quark is neurotic in its own right.) You are a student -- use student licensing. It's far cheaper. Also, many universities purchase site licenses which may include students for education site licenses.

And nobody better start claiming that the Adobe font folio -- US$8200 -- is priced fairly. $8200 isn't a fair price for that many fonts. Too high? No. Too low. Typefaces have almost no legal protection whatsoever, though they could technically be considered industrial design. That's sad.

  24. Sluts? on Criminal Libel, Free Speech And The Net · · Score: 4

Normally, I'd relegate this sort of post to that of a humorous troll. But, this is wonderfully applicable here. A few people, in jest, have pointed out that in a civil trial Ian could exonerate himself by proving that his statements were completely true.

    Check this shit out:

Milford, Utah, high-school teacher Cherry Florence was fired in February for an indiscretion. According to the local board of education, after the school, for health reasons, interviewed students individually as to their level of sexual activity, Florence released to her classes a list of which of the school's 170 teenagers were virgins.

Source: http://www.42.dropbear.id.au/wrd_news3. html (annoying javascript keeps the window on top. bastards.)

(I'm going to presume the above is true, as 170 people in high school is about right for a town of 1100 or so. I graduated with 20 and I came from a town of 300, so it seems right.)

Now, pressuming this goes to trial, couldn't Ian just hold up the list and say, "See! She really is a slut!" Actually, that's another problem in and of itself--define slut. Drunk. Incompetent. Very relative terms, giving him a lot of wiggle room. Here in North Dakota, I know quite a few people (old country Lutherans actually; listen to Garisson Keilor) who consider any woman who has sex for reasons other than procreation, or--[sarcasm]dear god forbid[/sarcasm]--marriage is a slut. This is a rather nice chink in the plaintiff's armor I'd suppose.

    Thoughts?

And please check out my previous post, just a few below, with Milford High School's snail mail address. I want to see that school office innundated with mail on this one. It's the least we could do, helping out a kid so he doesn't have to go through the shit a lot of us did/do.
