It was the same battle in the browser wars, and as most people agree, Netscape LOST when IE4 came out. IE5 is really good stuff, no one can argue there, and Netscape 4.7 is crap, my opinion.
You're right in saying "my opinion" because there are still lots of people out there who think that Netscape is still good, isn't crap, etc, etc (like me) and who wouldn't use IE 'less they had to (I do, sometimes, out of necessity).
When was the last time you installed windows and Boom!
I whole-heartedly agree with you on this one. The computer we had at my house ran/still runs Win95, but when I got my laptop, I wanted Win98, because I was stupid and believed that it would somehow be better. It wasn't, as we all know; in fact, it was worse. More of a memory hog, more of a pain, that stupid channel bar, Active Desktop, etc, etc, etc.. the list goes on for miles. Plus, my computer crashes more than the old computer running Win95! But, that's a bit off topic.. this isn't a Windows discussion, but.. just doing my <rant> for the day.
The general rule is that military tech is at least 10 years ahead of what the public has access to. The corrolary(sp?) is that the military never declassifies something until it has developed a countermeasure for it.
Ok, I'm not too quick sometimes, so I'm wondering: what would be a countermeasure to something like the "Z" machine? (what a dumb name) I'd also like to add that, you said that the military doesn't declassify something til they have a countermeasure for it. Which, if they released the "Z" machine, then that means they would, according to your rule, have a countermeasure for it, which is _not_, I might add, fusion. Yet, it is a thought: one must wonder what the military's hiding from us. Maybe they have fusion, or maybe they're just a lot closer than "we" are. Hmm........
because they're not going to want anyone to hack in and replace it with anything... say, a page with a whole bunch of goof-off rumors, fake logos, etc, etc, to make people think that they've released something (which would be obviously fake to some people, but then, since all we have now is rumors and speculation, some people would believe it.. at least for a while)
so, my guess is they have somebody (not necessarily a techie, I guess) looking in on things, you know?
as Illiad fortunately chose to include the "how to make a 'deletium' container" comic in it, I was finally motivated to actually make one. Still have the thing; it holds a cut up CD and a cut up floppy. (oo, exciting!)
I hope that IE has a lot of reason to fear when this new version of Netscape comes out.... because, as cheesy as this may sound, I love Netscape, and I don't use IE unless I absolutely have to (not all of the Windoz computers on this campus have zip drives so I can run Netscape).
Kudos to Netscape, whatever they do. (Preferable, however, release that new browser, and make it _good_).
(I'm probably way off on this one, but..) you could always look around/ask around for older versions of the software. Of course, can't the new versions run without using the net? Then again, I don't use quicktime.
A question for you: Why isn't your laptop net enabled? If it is not net enabled, then I'm going to have to assume that you acquire all of your software from some other method: another computer that is net enabled, other people, or by buying the stuff (ouch).
To be honest, I think M$ would have been better off to have _not_ written a reply, because whatever they would have written would have made me sick (unless they wrote that they were effectively going into self-destruction mode). I can't believe how utterly clueless they have to be, to not only act as they have (as a corporation) but to blindingly forge onward, as if they can't see how wrong they are, or as if they're some sort of marytr. When will they ever get the point?
I found Blair Witch to be goshawful too. Yes, they were original. That's where it ends. It sucked, it was the most unscary thing I've ever seen, and I got tired of having the objects in my view dart all over the place, and I was tired of their language. I laugh at those whom it frightened. (which is rude, I realize, but so often, I've been the one scared out of my mind at stuff, so it's nice to be on the other end for once, you know?)
Why use SETI? I thought, though I am often mistaken, that SETI was an inefficient use of processor time, and that they were sending out already-hashed-over data again because people were working through the data faster than they could collect it. Anybody know the deal?
This is probably inconceivably stupid, off-topic, and random, but. . .
I was wondering if another way to fix the date problem would be to
Create a program that could countdown to the switchover date (down to 23:59:59)
Extend said program to, at (or before?) the switchover second, "archive" all files to a different date setting (be it the four digits of 1900, or whatever), and then allow either the user to continue to use double digits like we've been using (I definitely don't think software in existence now will be used 100 years from now), and then you wouldn't have to worry about recognizing some dates as 19xx and some as 20xx.
Why? because, as the scheme of this patent now stands, after 20xx (whatever that date was? I can't remember), you have the same problem. it's only temporarily fixed. I realize that my "solution" is basically the same thing that they're doing, but who cares? Just ignore it if you don't like it. But the scheme of this patent is just as shoddy. I realize that software used now will probably not be in use however long from now, but it's still not fixing it, because even then, you'll have to change it for some stuff, right? I mean, especially if you're trying to have the oldest post-1900 computer! (ha-ha, funny-funny)
I sit in awe. Nice piece. No wonder it was moderated to 5. I don't know how why it could have been moderated down. Small minds, I presume. But it wasn't, so, moving on.. On a higher, uneducated, ignorant level (go ahead, moderate me down) could it not be possible to "reverse engineer" (more like, "copycat") a program by at least starting with some of the basic stuff and creating code that does all of the things that you can see it do? I realize that what this really is is just trying to see if you can re-write what they've already written, and not just exploring to figure out what they wrote and then work around the complications of copyright, etc, etc. I mean, on this small, narrow level of logic, you could, in effect, at least create the interface for something, the annoying little popup windows, etc, etc. That's something.
Either way, I just want to say that I think it's great that people can and do reverse engineer. I wish I had the know-how and patience to at least try. Kudos.
This may be troll, but.. I'm glad to see this. Another step in the broadening of horizons, the sharing of knowledge, the diversifying of the desktop. Now, if only more companies would offer alternative OSes as the OS with their computers.. not necessarily Linux, of course, but BeOS (is it default with any systems?), *BSD, OS/2 (maybe? for the heck of it?), more.. that I can't think of right off hand. But there are many more alternatives, I know, and I wish that at least some company, somewhere, would start a trend; so that you could walk into a computer store and select any of a cornucopia of OS for your new computer. Wouldn't that be grand?
I think they ought to GPL the AmigaOS, if they're going to kill Amiga dead. I think it would be neat; you could see what's going on in there (unless, we already know, in which case, oops), and you'd have something else to toy with, and for pete's sake: if nothing else "good" is going to come of this (besides some people's feathers will get smoothed, and Amiga will finally be dumped for good, right?), something should.. and GPLing the OS sounds good enough to me..
(sorry if this is flame) they posted this because it's interesting that someone could, would, and did do it. I, for one, am glad to hear it.. I think it's neat, and the next time someone wants to spontaneously try doin something new like that, let me know... I'll take it. *grin*
It is the management of organisations like the Comdex people who will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes.
Well, I agree in that it is the management of organizations who act rigidly in the manner in which Comdex acted tentatively. Yes, Comdex did deny him at first (or so it seems) but yes, he is being allowed to attend now. That is where Comdex's saving grace is. However, I realize what your greater argument is: people who are within the technology circles, and who are younger than 18, should be able to get in, because this is something that they need. Yet the no-one-under-18 rule excludes them. I've noted that other/. posters have mentioned that they got in under 18; good for them. I couldn't, likely, and even if I could.. that's not the issue here. It's not an issue of whether or not we ultimately can "get in;" it's an issue of being granted the permission to freely attend the convention, without having to "sneak" in. This issue borders on discrimination.. of the sort where your audience is selected based upon their intellect, field of specialty, and maturity within that field and overall. This is where the issue's "gray area" stretches on. This is why, I believe, organizations such as Comdex behave as they do; you just can't ensure that you'll have the people you want, because inevitably someone will get in that you don't desire to be there.
Of course, back on topic, I think that people/organizations shouldn't sniff at others simply because of age because it certainly isn't age that determines intellect; I'm 17 years older than I was when I was born, but that doesn't mean I'm 17 years smarter. So will it be 17 years down the road. Knowledge doesn't increase exponentially with age.. nor shall it ever. I can live for days and not learn anything new; yet I can also live for minutes and learn worlds of imformation that I didn't know before. When will they get the point?
What a bunch of bow-tie wearin' cowlicked losers we are.
While reading this, I thought to myself: The only reason I can figure as to why this was posted on slashdot is to make fun of the stupid people who would read something like this and think 'Wow! I'm going to get all the hunks now!' because who, in their right mind, would want someone who didn't have a mind of their own? I realize that a comment like that implies that only "nerds" have brains and that all the people that this piece targets women for are "brainless [jocks]," but that's not exactly what I'm implying. I'm not trying to stereotype anyone or discriminate, (and yes, it still sounds like I am), but I personally would _want_ some guy like they're describing (bug collection, Nintendo).. not necessarily that exact description, but someone who has interests of their own, explores alternate possibilities, and enjoys gaming (it's fun! you guys know this!). Therefore, I rather think that we should *cough* at this piece, laugh it up, and move on with our lives knowing we're better than that.
I realize that this is slightly whacky, and the person who's page this is will probably growl at me, but, one of the slashdotters (can't remember his name/nick) has a page, here (or linked to from here, I believe) that should prove interesting.. in the field of microwaves an other such pyro-manageable items. and to whoever's site this is, many thanks and kudos!!
They wanted a big story on it, and interviewed a few bands, who fed them all sorts of crap they made up off the top of their heads. Of course the article had nothing to do with reality. That was hilarious.
We can't beat 'em, we may as well play with them.
Indeed. But what I'm intrigued by is the effect that this lying, this proliferation of falsehood just to get attention, has on the large floundering-around-pathetically part of society. Just think of all the people who'll read this kind of stuff and believe it. And not only that, they'll quote it to others and remember key phrases in the backs of their minds, mulling over it intensely periodically for brief periods of time, spout some jibberish out, and continue with their thoughtless lives. Fish! They're all fish!

And I noticed that they all had that extremely campy look to them (as you've mentioned), that scream "Stereotype me, please!"
But what gets me is that almost everybody wants a painting like that. What has become of the free-mind?
Fish! They're all Fish!
