If there were no Windows, MS could choose to promote IE as a browser for other OSes (MacOS, Linux, *BSD, Irix, you get the point... :-)). Granted, they'd have to do more work to stay competitive in a market where IE doesn't just automatically come with the computer. Of course, this is assuming MS had an alternate source of revenue to keep them alive w/o the sales of Windows. So, I guess, in the end, you were right. If there were no Windows, the would be no Microsoft, therefore no IE.... Then again, Netscape could call their browser Internet Explorer..... but that's a horse of a different color. :-)

  3. possible caveat on Financing Growing Websites? · · Score: 1

If you're planning on offloading some of your bandwidth to your ISP, be sure that it's ok with your ISP's Terms of Service. Some ISP/web space providers expressly forbid linking to images from an outside page, others simply state that there can be no "hidden files" (i.e. that all files must at least be linked to somewhere on your site). Take the extra time to find out what you can get away with, otherwise you might one day find that all the images on your site fail to load. :-)

On the other hand, I believe that you should invest a fair amount of time and effort into streamlining your site as much as possible. Not only will it cut down on your costs and server load, you can tell your visitors you did it for their own benefit, so they can have a faster, more navigable site. Great PR stuff. ;-)

I was just thinking about thisthe other day. AI for driving would have to be really complex in order to be both effective and safe. There's a lot to driving when you really think about it (it's really pretty amazing if you analyze it down to the brain & muscular level :-)). Anyway, here's a few points which would need to be adressed:
    • The cars would have to be able to respond to pedestrian activity with sufficient foresight to stop in time without killing them :-)
    • They would have to be able to change lanes and know when they could do so without crashing into other cars.
    • They would have to be able to recognize when another car is making an unexpected stop or slowing down and act accordingly.
    • Presumably, if all cars were computer-controlled, there would be less crashes, but the cars should still know how to react in case there were.

There was more, but I just got a phone call and I lost my train of thought. :-) Believe it or not, the human brain is pretty powerful stuff. If we make so many mistakes when driving, it's gonna take a pretty good AI not to. :-)

Secondly, a quick question. Are you really gonna read all these posts? I mean, you asked the question and all, but, at last check there was 820+ posts... How do you decide when enough's enough?

For my last cent, I'll try a feeble attempt at actually contributing to the thread. I know about half a million people have all ready said this, but, the course you choose is gonna depend largely on the school you go to. Each school will design the focus of their majors a little differently. For example, at MIT there isn't a "Computer Engineering" degree, instead they have "Computer Science and Electrical Engineering" major (62 for those who care ;-)). So, if you know where you're gonna go all ready, take a close look at the course catalog and see what looks best to you.

    I'm done. :-)
