no no no, youve missed the point. the whole idea here is that when children build things with legos they learn invaluable problem sovling and engineering like skills that will be an asset to them their entire lives! building the 'Mega-Castle-Fortress-set-including-the-black-knig ht' is not necessarilly the best activity for developing these skills, but it can help get a child interested in these things which can then lead to them learning so much more.

the same can not be said at all for athletics. of course it's important to exercise and keep the body in shape, and for that reason we have phys. ed. classes. much in the same way one could argue that classes like these should be offered, not necessarily with lego, but some sort of problem solving classes. rather then teaching kids to regurgitate dates from a book, teach them to build their own worlds, use their imaginations, and solve the problems that the world is going to need solved when they become adults.

perhaps schools are not the best place to do this either. parents should at home encourage more intelligent play for their kids, in addition to healthier play (like sports).

  9. Re:So what becomes of the AIs? on Sir Arthur Clarke Writes About the 21st Century · · Score: 1

Ive been reading a lot of horrible predictions lately about an AI that we create that in turn ends up getting very mean and killing all of mankind (the matrix, various other 21st c predictions on /.) Now maybe Im being naive here, but it seems to me that as long as we are careful in programming this AI that there is no way that it would become evil and blood thirsty. If we do not give them the capacity to become angry, or to possess any of the more "negative" emotions that we have, then I can't see them ever becmoing evil.

But I suppose that that whole statement is based on the assumption that these AIs would have emotions, which are what always drive all human conflicts. So what about a life form that had no emotion? Could it be violent and try to kill us all?? The reference I will use is from star trek: the next generation. If we look at Data, we see a AI life form who (initially) had no emotions, and who had failsafe programming to make him fall back on ethics. Then if we look at Data's brother Lore, we see an AI that had emotions and a worse ethics backup, and we see what bad things he did.

But if we are creating something which is really a new life form, do we have the right to decide which if any emotions it has? a lot of these questions were addressed in star trek. mr. roddenbury was certainly a visionary, its a shame he's no longer with us to give us his view of the 21st centruy as we're getting to be 14 months away.

to me, the thing that makes someone a geek is the unending and infinitly satisfying search for knowledge. that's what it means to me. i want to know everything that i can about as many different things as i can during my life. in particular, i am interested in computing. (hence i call myself a computer geek) some geeks are in to astrophysics, some are into organic chemistry, and i say taht some are into painting. it doesnt matter what your focus is, but as long as you seek knowledge as your primary goal, you fall into my definition of a geek.

with all that being said, what then is the advantage of a functional language? it would appear to me (in my staggering ignorance) that they are primarily usefull in hiding the programmer from some of the gory details of the programming by making it higher level.

while it is obvious that this speeds up development time, does it really improve execution speed over a well written algorithm? it seems to me that maybe one line of haskell code might be able to do what 10 lines of C code can (maybe even in a loop or recursively), but in order to get the job done, isnt the haskell gonna have to do just as much underneath?

also, (and please flame me if im wrong) but dont i remember being told in a programming class that 1.) anything that can be done recursively can be done iteratively, and 2.) that recursion (while often easier to code) is usually not the most efficent solution. ? im still very confused. can anyone help me on why/how functional programs would be faster? (or maybe im misinterpreting the idea of why they were suggested to be used in this contest)

dont think that im trying to put functional programming down, im still learning what it is. i just want to understand more, and i find these /. discussions an excellent place to learn.
