  1. What about my toaster? on ARIN Letter Says Two More Years of IPv4 · · Score: 5, Funny

When IPv6 was announced, one of the benefits was that everything could have its own IP address; even your toaster!

So as for a business case, what about the internet toaster business? If we don't switch to IPv6, what will they do?

  2. Synergies on Time Warner To Spin Off AOL · · Score: 5, Funny

Please don't say "synergies." It makes me cry a little.

Question: how do you burn a digital book?

  6. Sealed = for sale on Papers Sealed In Class Action Against RIAA · · Score: 5, Funny

The documents are sealed in a plastic box, but you can buy them for only $15.95 at your local record store.

If you copy them, we'll sue you. And there's no refunds if you don't like the documents.

Will this hologram technology be capable of storing a Holoduke?

  8. Re:Glassfish is a Must-Have for Oracle on Will Oracle Keep Funding Sun's Pet Java Projects? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Applets are still used quite extensively, actually. And now we have webstart, which is more or less the same candy in a different wrapper.

  9. Re:Here we go again on Microsoft Suffers Leaks, Lagging Sales Numbers As They Look Forward To Windows 8 · · Score: 2, Funny

I'm sure they'll have WinFS ready by Windows 30.

  11. Really? on Opting Out Increases Spam? · · Score: 3, Insightful

People still fall for this "opt-out" scam? Really?

I thought this was pretty well known and understood by now, especially by Slashdot types.

  12. Re:They all suck on F-Secure Suggests Ditching Adobe Reader For Free PDF Viewers · · Score: 1

Dude, the free PDF readers can't even render background images correctly. I don't think they will be supporting the mentally-challenged features anytime soon when they can't even get the basics right.

  13. Re:They all suck on F-Secure Suggests Ditching Adobe Reader For Free PDF Viewers · · Score: 1

Troll or not, this is absolutely correct. Acroread is bloated and slow, but it's the only reader that can display complex documents correctly. The other viewers are simply not feature-complete.

  14. WTF? on Yamaha Unveils Golf Cart Powered By Cow Dung · · Score: 2, Informative

  15. Re:Recursion on 2009 ACM Programming Contest Results and Webcast · · Score: 2, Insightful

In my experience with both ICPC and TopCoder, they only test the solution with "toy" examples on a relatively fast machine.

That's not the same as saying your solution has to be, for example, O(n) or better.

  16. Recursion on 2009 ACM Programming Contest Results and Webcast · · Score: 2, Informative

Is it just me, or can 90% of the problems in ICPC be solved with brute-force recursive solutions?

Seems to me they could make things more interesting if they added a time complexity restriction to each problem.

I think you meant to say a game engine that's not evil.

  20. Re:Over-reaching much? on RIAA Brief Attacks Free Software Foundation · · Score: 4, Insightful

You describe the backlash as though it hasn't already happened. Remember Tower Records? Virgin Megastore?

The music industry is dying, and this is their last stand.

  21. Re:Not necessarily on Game Retailers Hurting Themselves With Digital Distribution · · Score: 1

But why buy from the store? If you attend the concerts, you can usually buy every album you want at a discount, with no retailer involved.

For less well known bands (i.e. not U2 and Def Leppard) the amount you save by purchasing albums at the show can cover the entire ticket price.

  22. Re:Wait... accreditation? on Telstra Lays Down Law On Social Media · · Score: 1

  24. Re:Twitter... again? on Ford Bets On Social Media For Fiesta · · Score: 2, Insightful

That's the thing though; old media is OBSESSED with Twitter. But is anyone else?

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I've never a single person who actually uses it.

  25. Twitter... again? on Ford Bets On Social Media For Fiesta · · Score: 4, Insightful

Why is Twitter suddenly such a big deal? Yesterday we hear that Oprah is starting to use Twitter, now Ford. But why?

Is Twitter really some kind of revolution, or is everyone jumping on a random bandwagon because they're afraid they'll look behind the times if they don't?
