This is exactly what has always been pointed out here on slashdot as the obvious reason why restricted playback isn't going to work.

I couldn't for the life of me understand why Descent wasn't as popular as DOOM (yes, D1 was competing against DOOM, not Quake! -- talk about technological superiority). It must have been the complexity of the controls. Getting good at Descent is hard and takes time, but that's part of the appeal. Can you tell I'm a flightsim fan?

Anyway, I recently bought D3 but haven't played it as much as I'd like to because of the hassle of rebooting, so this is great news! (less great if it's not going to be a complete, fully supported port)

It seems I'll be playing Quake 2, Quake 3 and Descent 3 in linux soon. To complete my collection I just need Falcon 4 and Shogo.

Regarding Shogo: If you're like me, and think that in a certains sense, ID games have been going downhill since Wolf3D (you're not on edge as you peak through the doors with 20% health, you don't jump in your seat when you're shot in the back) then Shogo's out-of-vehicle parts may appeal to you.

Ponder this: If functional programming had always been the norm, might we consider the jumps from single threading to multithreading, from UP to SMP, from local computing to distributed computing to be simply neat compiler/interpreter optimizations that in no way command a change in the way we design and implement applications?

I first heard "legit" programmers calling themselves hackers when I started using the Internet around '93, which put me in touch with more Americans. I think I get what they're driving at. Concentrate on the "...permanently, doing away with the need to erase files" part. They seem to be talking about append-only storage. Using such storage you can presumably design a safer system, one where a virus can't insert itself into a preexisting binary because it's read-only, where hackers and absent-minded sysadmins can't erase or alter the system (think logs, specifically), where a crash can't corrupt the filesystem. Any vast storage device makes this practical, regardless of what technology is used to implement the vast storage.

The tricky part would be to safely manage overrides. You'd want to alter files by writing a new one that overrides the old one, but then you've got some of your old problems again.

Has this kind of thing been studied at all? It looks interesting.
