You think feeding a penguin is scary?

Try feeding a puffin. Have you noticed the shape of their beaks? Kind of unusual. They're about as wide at the base as they are long. This, obviously, makes it easier for them to bite down real hard on you finger, and to even cut it clear off. --
Cook argues that links to music stored elsewhere on the Net shouldn't make a Web site liable for fees, but Amenica said that the issue is cloudier than that. "Linking does present certain issues, no doubt about it," he said, adding that the group is currently pursuing only sites whose musical links appear to be local to the site, even if those links actually lead to a different server. "If [the links] take you off a particular Web site, right now we're not pursuing that at all," Amenica said.
Hoping to prevent flamage, I just wanted to point out what "linking", as emphasised in the story, actually means in this case. When Amenica talk about links appearing to be on the site itself, he's talking about frames whose content is not on the site in question.
Note that I'm not siding with the ASCAP, I just think the wording of the article is slightly misleading in a way that creates more outrage than is called for. It happens a lot here on slashdot. --
They also don't need a "break in the axis." Stop assuming graphs always start at 0. They don't. Your fallacy, not AMD's
Really? When they tought me about graphs in high school they said the break symbol was required.
You admit you judge a book initially by its cover
I'm having a hard time seeing how "judging a book by its cover" describes what I did. Perhaps you think I think the Athlon sucks because AMD's marketing is misleading. I didn't say that. --
Doubtful. The people who primarily use Linux do so because it is free.
That's what I think, but I get the feeling you're talking about the other kind of "free".
Linux users are unwilling to spend money on software.
I bought vmware. I will buy Quake 3 Arena.
If you wish to question that assumption, then please provide me with sales figures for these Linux versions you speak of. I anticipate that the sales are quite dismal, but the pirating rate is quite high.
I have never illegally copied, or used an illegal copy of, any linux software. I'm proud of that. If somebody wants my vmware license key, I'll tell them to buy their own. This is different from my attitude to pirating in the world outside Linux. I suspect many Linux users feel the same way. I imagine pirating rates should be low for Linux software. --
Doesn't it make you mad when people do shit like this? If you were to look at the bars and not notice the numbers, you'd conclude that the Athlon @550 was about three times as fast as the P3 @550 in the top two categories and about twice as fast in the third. It is in fact a good deal faster, but not twice as fast. When presenting just a part of a graph like this, the least you can do is indicate a break in the axis. This is pure evil. --
Well, you're never going to send one forklift to the long-term facility. You're going to send a convoy of trucks.
More than anything, my point is that "only a car is like a car". Can't we just evaluate computer technology using its own terms? Bringing forklifts into the discussion won't help much, I think. --

Im currently using matching E and GTK themes. The 'looks-cool' factor is very important for me and Ive tolerated the sluggishness that comes with it so far. However, I cant help but wonder why the hell these simple graphics take so damn long to draw. Its not like were doing dozens of layers of alpha blending or animated fractal generated height map rendering with environment mapping and specular highlighting from multiple colour animating, moving lightsources. Actually, I feel my P2-400 should manage that just fine. It can certainly scale and display a few pixmaps faster than this.
I should stop whining and do something about it. Too bad I'm such a lazy sob:-) --

Didn't you read the article? The point isn't that some poor geek is forced to use Word to get a job (he wasn't--they accepted.rtf). The point is that there's something wrong with the whole architecture of the employment agency-driven job market: Namely that you have a clueful employer on one end, a clueful potential employee on the other, and a wall of cluelessness in the middle. --
It is my understanding (and it may be wishful thinking) that CORBA can select the most efficiant communication mechanism available. That means sockets over a network, and none on the same machine. If this is bogus, please correct me! --
Guppi will handle graphs for Gnumeric, the Gnome spreadsheet. Guppi has high ambitions, but I don't know if it's useful yet. The web page says it isn't, but web pages tend not to stay current for very long in the gnome world. At any rate, there are some more graphing resources listed on the Guppi page.
Of course, if you do go with the GIMP, you could get some seriously sharp looking graphs for your extra effort. --
You need to upgrade your imagination. Don't think about textual information or programs. That stuff may grow, but not so much. Think about *video*, recordings of your videophonecalls, recordings of your favorite tv shows and movies. What do you think comes after collecting mp3's? Collecting music videos, of course. --
I'm from Europe as well. English is not my native tongue, but I've learned the language pretty well. I pride myself on speaking properly, both in English and my native language, Icelandic.
My knowledge of English comes from many sources (television, books, the web, irc, etc.) and I may have picked up some errors along the way. If I were mixing "its" and "it's", or "to" and "too", I'd prefer it if someone told me about it. Correcting someone's grammar and spelling usually isn't intended as an attack on them. It's not hate for the person, it's love for the language.
I don't think I'll ever understand people who, when corrected, respond with "so?", "I don't care", or "what business of yours is it how I speak?". Don't these people want to better themselves? Are they proud to be... (I don't want to say "stupid", but it's something like that)? --
I just bought vmware and when Q3A is out, I'll buy that too. Were there free (beer) vmware or Q3A clones out there I'd probably use those and keep my money. It's not what people would like to hear, and I'd like to tell them otherwise, but that's the truth. I'm almost certainly not going to buy something like Opera when there are good, free, alternatives available. --
I thought the penguin was the ugliest logo they could possibly have chosen. Some called it simple and elegant, I call it childish. It doesn't look like a cute penguin to me. It's too artificial, somehow.
Also, keep in mind that while the penguin is Linux's mascott, Debian isn't just a Gnu/Linux distribution. They've got a Gnu/Hurd distribution in the works too (It's not suitable for Joe Public yet, but it's there and moving along steadily). --
This is what I've thought for ages. People are constantly trying to cater to newbies by simplifying linux, where 'simplify' means 'make less powerful'. Instead, I think the proper course of action would be to *educate* the newbies on how to take advantage of all the power they have at their fingertips. --
The best part of my new Quantum 6.4GB drive isn't the size or the access time, but the low noise emissions. The difference over my older 2-4GB drives is amazing. --
