You do not need to wait long. I had created a PPT file in MS Office 2003 at work that cannot be opened by MS Office 2013 for some unknown reason. The other hot topic is activation servers. As with any proprietary software that depends on activation or licencing servers, when they are gone so is your ability to install and or run that software. I see this one happening all the time with entertainment software.

  5. As with many other people's preferences, you end up with a smartphone that runs the software you want to run. Windows Phone never had much if any support by Google, while Android and iOS market places, or walled gardens, have software by Microsoft (access to Exchange, Skype for home and for business, Office among others). Third party software vendors did not embrace Windows Phone either. Tinder is not available as far as I can tell.

I had a look at WhatsApp website. Its main selling point is that there is no SMS surchages. It does not claim any other security measure other than ciphering the messages in any one to one conversation, for example, when you exchange some of your most personal moments aka underage sexting. These messages are not stored in their servers - that would be bad for their reputation. It does not claim the messages are encrypted on your phone, and that neither RAM or flash is being overwritten.

Talking about other things, overwritting 38 times the same hard disk over and over is something that a notorious political party does when recycling old computers in the country where I am. That the person in charge of that computer was being investigated by the authorities had nothing to do with the recycling policy.

Cortana can be seen as a negative point. I am thinking of a situation like when you search for a document with an already sensitive title and Cortana sends a search to Bing server outside of your control. I particularly would not like that.

Apart from that, some of your claims are doubtful at this point of time. Most applications do not take into account high DPI screens yet (too much baggage on the software side, not OS). I find it strange you are not outraged by the fact that new HW does not work with older OS. It kinda resembles the HW issues with GNU/Linux these days.

Privacy is a bitch, with HHRR matching public Facebook profiles to CVs. Nobody wants to try to keep up with the latest tweaks to the policy settings.
Adverts also take a considerable portion of the screen, something you do not have on a mobile phone. Aand to make things worse, FB introduced a new policy of not showing all of your posts to your followers. Now, if you are a paying customer, that is another story.
I have not hear if any IM application that has these two issues. Well, many apps might share instantaneous information like location, but not your posts with strangers.

  12. Smart TVs are not needed on Ask Slashdot: Why Do You Want a 'Smart TV'? · · Score: 1
Like 3D glasses, they are not important to me. However, high end stuff do carry these extra things. Like the panny plasma TV that has a bluetooth remote with incorporated mic or the battery powered pencil used to play engaging tic-tac-toe games on top of the screen. Nice thinking!

I know I was going to watch OTA TV channels that are sent at a glorious 576i, so I wanted a good SD decoder, an extremely good deinterlacer and a brilliant upscaler. You will not believe that brick and mortar shops had horrible demos with 576i and 1080i video formats. Do you know these scrolling text boxes? They appeared either as if the image was line doubled (you loose one every line!) or with artifacts like stutter (wrong cadence detected) or black lines. Unfortunately, manufacturers do not advertise these important features, or the color accuracy. They just give out extremely high numbers. If half images are sent at 50Hz, what is the purpose of telling refresh rate of 4000Hz? I will tell you - CCFL backlight LCDs and their LED backlight siblings are just crap, you need a lot of preprocessing and predistortion to make this thing work as it should.

I personally would not choose the TV for its smart TV features. However, I would also not like set top boxes at all either. At most I will use sticks like Chromecast that can be powered by the TV itself. I do not know why TV manufacturers keep advertising their TV tuners work with cable when there is no cable provider that allows you to do that.

I agree with you. I had a quick look at Wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... ) and found no important reason why migration is a must. You might like the touch interface better, but if you are like me and have no touch screen then you will forget it exists. Remember: the OS is not the defining factor here, it is the software you want to run. As most software work on both OS versions, there is no need to go with on or the other. Actually, you probably will hear from software not working on Windows 10 rather than on Windows 7 (or at least not being officially supported on Windows 10). After all, most sofware vendors try to appease the crowd. Note that software vendors like Adobe do give support for OS starting Windows 7 (released 2009 although you need SP1) and MacOsX 10.9 (release 2013) - note the date difference. The odd exception to the rule of software supporting both Windows 7 and Windows 10 are some games published by Microsoft that require Windows 10, but the performance is terrible I read.

And do not forget to read about what other people might think of Windows 10.

I read that 98% of smart phone users in Spain use WhatsApp. It is so common, you have it everywhere, on TV, on websites as a way of contact, on radio shows. Note that WhatsApp only requires your mobile phone number as your ID (it is verified via SMS), and it grabs all of your contacts. No need to remember IDs, passwords or anything else.
A popular feature is the group messaging. Most people I know are in many of these groups, be it the parents of a classroom, work colleagues or old friends. Most of the time I hear people having to silence notifications from many of these groups - people tend to share their findings on the internet and their memes a lot. It is also common to create groups with something in mind, like organizing a trip, but keeping the group for ever and ever.
Another popular feature is that the client is available in competing marketplaces. It started with BB when it was popular, then it went to Apple, Android and Windows Phone. Not that it matter anymore, though.

  21. As a fellow European, I suppose things vary with country or region. My ISP has installed fiber to home, so I need some box to connect to the TV anyhow (I have no clue how this box looks like). I know that the signals through the previous coax installation included a few analog TV channels. As much as I have researched, this ISP does not sell or rent CI+ cards that I can slot into the TV. Actually, I do believe without many facts backing me up that CI+ can only be used for an OTA digital channel that broadcast football matches.
By the way, the same ISP forces me to rent a landline, even if the combined offer includes one mobile phone. Now, that is something that needs to be abolished.
