  1. Take a look at the Deans' hard drives on Universities Refuse To Ban Napster · · Score: 1

Those universities' decisions not to block napster had had a lot to do with protecting online freedom, but it might also have something to do with those 80 gig untra scsi2's that the Deans of some of those universities just bought. As well as the extra data lines into their offices. :p

  3. Prices out of control on Too Much Corporate Power? · · Score: 1

One of the reasons that i decided to use Linux as my primary OS was when I started to research how much it would cost me to get some decent software. The corporate powers have really gotten out of hand in how much that they charge for software. Just ask anybody who wants to get a copy of MSOffice. (Go S tarOffice!) Also of concern is the price of fun software such as Adobe Photoshop, or animatek's worldbuilder.

What is the software industry trying to pull? Sure there are many people out there who have the money to buy this stuff, but how many times would sales (and therefore profits) increase if you could get cool stuff like that for only about US$100?

  4. The real ramifications to this. on Napster Court Date Set For October 2 · · Score: 1

What we must consider is the full impact that this judgement could have on the whole world. How many people out their have at least one mp3 of their favorite artist? Will they be able to make a judgment that would make so many people thieves, who are ordinarily law abiding citizens?

Second, how long will it take to get rid of all the programs on the internet that enable people to rip copies of cd's?

One important point i would like to bring out involves the amount of money that the RIAA actually loses from people ripping cds. from ripping cds. Most people who spend lots of money on cds do not have rippers or mp3 players, and many do not even have computers.

The only thing that the RIAA is upset about is the fact that they can't completely control every aspect of the music industry. If they really wanted to make some money they could form a company to make and sell portable mp3 players and mp3 ready cd players. That would more than make up for the insignificant percieved losses that come from the proliferation of mp3s.

  5. The real issure here. on Adobe Sues Over Tabbed Widgets · · Score: 1

Since everyone is in the mood to sue of stupid, lame, idiotic stuff then why isn't amazon suing musicians friend? if you go to the sites you will see what i mean.

The whole point of all of this is to prove that none of these lawsuites that are going around over patent infringement have anything to do with the design of products or copyrights.

The only reason Macromedia is being sued is because they make graphical design programs, as does Adobe. Adobe is only trying to hurt one of their biggest competitors, and if they keep them from using their precious widgets then that is just a bonus.

Musicians Friend has remained untouched because they sell musical instruments and do not represent a significant threat to amazon's book sales, in fact amazon sells far more music books than musicians friend.

One more example of this practice of hurting your competitors with stupid lawsuites is that between Barnes and Noble and amazon a while back. (Read the Slashdot story here.) The only reason amazon started that lawsuite is because B&N is their biggest competitor and once again, if they could keep B&N from using their precious 1-click crap then they were all the more happy.

When will the Courts handling these cases wake up and smell the mud?

There have been some interesting scifi shows that included nanites, and i feel that in light of this article, that the events that occured in those shows should not be dismissed as just fantasy.

There was an episode of Star Trek in which nanites got loose and started eating the circut pathways in the ship to get energy.

There was also an interesting Outer Limits that portrayed a man who injected himself with medical nanites. They cured his cancer, fixed his bad vision and he could run indefinitly while hardly getting out of breath and heal serious injuries in a matter of minutes/seconds.

Then when the doctor started to test the capabilites of the guy, the nanites responded in kind. When one day they did some tests to see how long he could hold his breath, the next day he had grown gills. They also had figured out how to override the kill switch command that the doctor sent them. After a day of poking and prodding, the next day he had grown another set of ribs around his abdomen. One day he grew another set of eyes on the back of his head. Near the end he had also grown a network of weird looking stuff all over his skin. It turned out that they were a protective measure, and were the same type of stinging mechanisms that is found of jellyfish.

All of this serves to prove how dangerous this technology can be if it is not used responsibly it could become more dangerous than anything that our imaginations can concieve...

  17. Oh... So were finally figuring it out? on AOL + Time-Warner Worse Than Microsoft? · · Score: 1

It seems to me that Microsoft hasnt been alone in their business practices for quite some time. Not only companies like Time Warner/AOL but also companies like Cisco Systems.

Although they produced a large part of the hardware that makes up the internet, they have used their power for evil. Cisco is extremely proprietary with their products. They have made it a practice to forbid any and all companies from creating software for their routers therebye making CiscoIOS the only choice for peoples' router needs.

Another thing that should be addressed is CiscoIOS itself. Cisco has made a practice of buying smaller router producing companies and taking their router software and slapping a CiscoIOS label on it. So we have many many versions of CiscoIOS that are extremely dissimilar.

By doing all of that, Cisco has created a closed loop that relies completely on them being at the center.

Internet technology is one of the fastest growing industries right now and Cisco's business practices are stifling growth. For example, Cisco uses marketing to sell their products, even though they may not always be the best available. (Sound familiar?) Cisco's reliance on marketing is illustrated by the fact that they were one of the last companies on the planet who developed a Terabit router.

All of this adds up to the fact that Cisco is developing a monopoly and they arent even trying to not do it. They are forming their power base even more aggresively than Microsoft.

That is the only possible explanation that I can think of right now. They just skipped over "5" and went straight to 6 in a lame attempt to make it seem that Netscape 6 is more advanced than IE 5. This will probably work with the multitude of stupid people who believe that version numbers are the tellall in the world of computers. (these are probably the same stupid people who think that AOL is that best thing since the transistor.)

Even though I will probably be able to go to quite a few websites that will cause Netscape 6 to crash and burn, it is still a good ploy.

They can also make antigravity if they discover a substance that scientists call "exotic matter" this is a theoretical substance that supposedly has many strange and useful properties.
Unfortunately, this will result in antigravity, but they will still not know anything about gravity.
