  1. What control of web viewing means... on Clever Girl Bess · · Score: 2

Does this mean that pepsi could pay these guys a bunch of money, and suddenly, no matter how hard you try, nothing Coke related will come up?

Lots of people throw fits when it looks like corporations are screwing them over. Why is no one objecting to allowing a major company to control the content that their kids see?

In my opinion, it would be easier to do the following: First make all students who want to use the internet sign an agreement. Then make sure every student has a network login. If they dont sign the agreement, then their account doesnt get internet access. Then, there are plenty of products that will cache, and scan the incoming content. They can flag potential violations of the agreement, and then a human can look at them to make sure they really are bad. The software should also cache whose account the content went to, and then the student can be held accountable for his own actions.

  3. Schools and computers... on Kids and Computers · · Score: 1

From what i have seen of computers in schools, is that the school must decide that it will make computers a big part of the school. I have seen schools who have made that their mission, and it has been a success. When computers are given priority, then the school will find ways to make it happen.

On the other hand, in the school that I went to, as with most other schools, computers were behind such activities as sports, and jock straps for the football team. At my old school, there were two computer labs. Each had a combination of old 486's and newer PII/III/Celeron's, most of which were bought with grant money. Ok, so far so good for a school in a less affluent area. However, there is only one full time computer teacher. sometimes there is an ENGLISH class in one of the labs. Other than that, one of the labs is empty most of the day.

Me and my friends at the school had tried to get the school to do more with the computers. We soon found out, that it wasn't a matter of money, because, we offered ways to cut computer costs (Linux servers, Linux, Linux...etc[linux]). However, we were continually shot down by an administration that just didn't like computers.

Now i hear that they have implemented internet filtering. It is one of those awful ones that filters out everything except porn, hate material, and satan worship.

So i guess that the point is that schools have to WANT to support computer usage. If they decide that they need new lockers (to replace the ones that were removed 5 years earlier because people were hiding drugs in them) instead of computers, well, there is nothing that can be done.

The rest of the 100,000 or so "hackers" were probably just script kiddies who were doing what script kiddies do best. You know the kiddie mentality, some kiddie found out about what a few guys were doing and immediately started blabbing it to all his kiddie friends and claiming he was a w00t 31337 h@X0r d00d.

In alot of the places that Linux is lacking in, M$ is strong. If one went away, then the other would not have any incentive to get better and would stagnate.

The truth is, is you can still do more stuff in windows than in linux. In windows i use photoshop, Lightwave, Visual Basic, Frontpage, numerous games, and numerous other programs. I use linux for word processing (StarOffice), as a Primary domain controller/file/print server, Web server, proxy server, messing with perl, and other leet stuff we all know linux does. The only way that I would every move over to pure linux is if/when more programs are ported over to linux. As far as i can tell, that isn't going to happen any time soon. The primary focus is on building free alternatives from scratch. I would much rather see stuff like what IDSoftware did with quake I&II. It would be cool if companies could start building apps that could be used with either a windows binary or a linux binary.

For example If i buy a program for windows, and i wanted to use it for linux, either i could get the linux binary off of the install media, or from the company after i proved my windows license.

I guess what I'm getting at is that both sides of the M$ vs. Linux fight should just knock it off. You are being a bunch of immature punks. It is going to be a long time before one or the other actually truly becomes better than the other. Until then, shut yer pie hole!
