How can our own government be sure that some spy did not infiltrate M$ and is planting back doors to be used against us.

Corel is trying becuase it recognized the value of Linux long before any other corporation did. Now that the bandwagon is rolling and every tom dick and harry is jumping on it is easy to overlook this fact.

As to why corel is trying I think the answer is simple. It is just about impossible to compete with M$ in the windows marketplace and corel sees Linux as an opportunity to sell their software without competing with M$. They are corporation and this is a wise and prudent thing for them to do. In fact Corel saw this before everyone else did.

If linux is a community then you ought to treat members of your community better. If they make a mistake (especially if it was an honest one) you correct them gently. If they deserve critisicm then you critisize constructively. Instead we seem to want to beat the crap out of them at every opportunity.

Sure Corel ought to participate in slashdot (actually does any other corporation do so regularly?) but let's be honest they shouldn't Have to. Also I think it might be little naive to say that slashdot is the open source community. Open source is bigger then slashdot.

    • corel contributes both money and manpower for important open source projects (ie Wine)
    • Corel chose Debian as a base. According to slashdot polls the Debian distro is the best but it was very difficult to install or set up for the average user. Corel needs to be applauded for their efforts to put a higher degree of usability to Debian.
    • Corel was amongst the first major software companies to embrace Linux. they ported Wordperfect before any other major software company ported anything else. They are about to port their entire suite over soon. Where is IBM with smartsuite? Where is MS?
    • If they port Paradox over they will bring a sorely needed desktop database and a RAD database front end tool to Linux.

I know there is a large number of people who believe that all software on Linux must be open source but I disagree. There has to be both. competition is good. By continually bashing one of the early adopters of Linux you are sending a signal to all other commercial software companies. Don't come here. Don't help us, don't contribute because we will pound on you no matter what you do. We will ignore every positive thing you have done and instead zero in on every little mistake. I am waiting anxiously for Corel to post Paradox to linux I think it will be huge leap forward if the Linux version is anywhere close to what the windows version was (minus the crashing of course).
