I know its sort of a chicken / egg thing... but can someone explain exactly why BT itself can't be used to distribute torrents
BT works by connecting to a tracker, which tells it about other hosts downloading the same file. Without a.torrent file, BT doesn't know what file to get or how to contact the tracker. You could distribute.torrent files over BT, but you'd need another.torrent to tell BT where to go to get the first.torrent. It'd only really be practical if you put together a massive collection of.torrents (like the suprnova database) in a.zip file and then used BT to download that.

And can someone explain to me again why some people still persist with giving their credit card numbers over the phone "because its more secure"?
Mostly because they're clueless. However, an unencrypted HTTP connection is probably less secure than a phone conversation, because it's much easier to sniff.
kernel.org has uber-bandwidth. I wouldn't worry about slashdotting it with a 2.4 point release.

Kernel 2.4.23 Released

You probably won't ever see a newer kernel in Debian stable/woody. Bugfixes will be backported to the current kernel. If you want a newer kernel, you should probably upgrade to testing/sarge or unstable/sid.
I should not imagine even mission critical production environments sticking with 2.4 after 2.6 is released.
That's why you're not in charge of a mission critical production environment. Those who are know that an increase in performance is not worth a decrease in reliability. 2.6.0 is not going to be as stable and reliable as 2.4.23 is, just as 2.4.0 wasn't as stable as 2.2.18.
Yes, but you can do that with any distro (some more than others, but Gentoo isn't any more pick-and-choose-able than Debian or LFS). Gentoo really only offers advantages to those who do know how to customize USE flags.
I could theoretically set up a web presence and reach more people that those large faceless companies they serveyed.
Theoretically, you could, but it'd take a lot of cash. The bandwidth/hosting bills are the same no matter who's paying them, and for a site with millions of visitors per day, they're not very pretty.
Sorry, but you're wrong. RoTK is 3.5 hours long, and that's Peter Jackson's choice. New Line didn't impose any restrictions (they did on FoTR and TTT, but not here). He chose to cut the Saruman scene because it didn't fit with the flow of the movie.
No company would write a serious commercial product based on GTK for Windows or OSX. I do think the GTK is the superior widget set for Linux, but QT has it beat hands down as far as native ports to other OSes.
but you listen to your portable MP3 player with headphones.
Maybe you do. Some of us hook up portable players to real speakers, at home or in a car, and appreciate high-quality audio. Also, in those situations, battery life is generally not an issue.
Try Knoppix. It's a bootable CD with a full Debian-based desktop environment, with packages mostly from testing (but a few added in from unstable). You can install it to the hard disk in just a few minutes (much easier than the standard Debian installer), and you'll have a full Debian system.
However, why do you need a new ISO image every week? Just download a standard ISO and tell it to retrieve packages from Debian's servers. You'll automatically get the newest packages whenver you install.
Legally, you may be correct. Morally, if I purchase something legitimately on a given computer, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to play it on that computer.

It's called a live performance. It's quite possible for an artist to recoup their production costs in ticket sales.
No. Open-source 3D acceleration is only available for Radeons 9200 and under. 2D acceleration is supported for all existing Radeons.

You could just apply the patch yourself.

Not everyone plans on upgrading to 2.6.0 the moment it comes out.
/. has always announced minor kernel releases. Where've you been?

If it wasn't so sad that people can charge $50 for what in Apache is a one-line config change, it'd be pretty funny.
At least MS only bloats the system with one IM app installed by default. Some Linux distributions install four or five.
I bet he's saving that for 2.6.0 final.
A 200Mhz video game in the 70s? The $8 million Cray supercomputers of that era ran at 80Mhz. I think your numbers are a little off.
It's only 72K. The average /. comments page is probably twice that size.
If you care about Deus Ex, you know who Warren Spector is.

Someone's going to rant about how it's still not as good as the iPod.

So it _COULD_ catch up to debians 3,000 packages couldn't it?p.Currently Debian unstable has more than 11000 packages. Fedora has a long way to go.
