Perhaps, but the majority of the applications that people have expressed a need for, will run perfectly on current machines. The CPU hungry applicatiosn tends be more specialized, like Photoshop and Database server software. The vast majority of desktops don't run these application, thus there is very little push to upgrade. however if the next generation of OS's require more power or someone developes a new killer app. that requires a lot of power, then there will be a huge push for upgrading.
For 1200 years china was the richest empire in the world. They were initially very war like and had great military might. Soon they set out and saw the world and saw that there wasn't anything worth while out there. just barbarians and italians. So they turned inwards, stoped spending so much on military and poured more energy into civil engineering projects and stopped developing weapons technology.
Result: a hundred years later the british came kicked chinas ass and China became asia whipping boy for a few decades. Peace is overrated. Prepare for war because it will come.
Sure total annihalation had some nicer graphics and better interface but starcraft is the so much better in style and gameplay. They have three fundementally different races and still the game is balanced. TA had two balanced races but they had no character no style. You just had walking tank A or walking tank B. Besides Starcraft is still one of the better selling games 3 years after it's release as well as having a least 10,000 games going on at any time while TA had about 16 on gamespy the last time I checked.
Ratcrows right. DNA computers will be just be np machines that have massive parrallelism. The could do certain algorithms very well but it will not be a general purpose cpu anytime soon. I figure it'd be used as a code breaker first because code breaking comforms to the specs of this machines. namely "general knowlege about the answer".
Few people will buy something merely for it's specs. Most people require 1 or more "Killer APP" to buy these machines. Playstation had Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid. N64 had Zelda. What does mandrake have? I haven't seen anything for the X-box that would quilify either. All their games are simply standard genre peices with somewhat prettier effects. I don't think it will have much success unless it can grab a game like Final Fantasy.
If the US ever gets a working DNA computer, no encryption will will be safe. It's interesting, the DNA comuter would literally be a million monkeys. eventually they'll recreate shakespear, and with a dna computer, it will break all encription by massive parrelelism and brute force.
poeple partition their drives to reduce fragmentation and reduce the size of clusters. It's a habit from Win9x I suppose. Smaller cluster Sizes reduce space wastage and access times. Unix uses somethign different though.
Thats not completely false but there are only so many ways to do certain things. You can't upgrade the human nervius system so your gonna get a lot of similiar interfaces. I don't like xp. But I'll have to use it at some point, minus well get over it. The thing is I don't like linux and I don't have to use it. I hate the expense of Macs and all my favorite software comes first for Windows so I've grown to love my win 98. And they can pry it from my cold dead hands or maybe bribe me with "starcraft 2, only for linux."
You can knock it all you want but it won't stop the 100 million people who will buy it. It's slow and has security holes bigger than ICQ circa 1998 but there is a lot of solid interface research that went into making it. People will use it because it is going to be installed on their new computer. And they'll grow atatched to it because it's what they know. Sometimes the winner isn't who's best suited for the job but the one that is most familiar to the user.
It should be noted how ever that only in very few instances in history have any side won without
"large numbers of medium and heavy units". it may be the prodaminant strategy in RTS games and it is the prodominant strategy of real world poers. Look no further than the United states.
And as in the real world if your defensive set up can significantly hinder the "large numbers of medium and heavy unit" you can take a disporpotionaly large amount of the enemy and win. This is true in both real life and in the games. A good example is vietnam.
RTS are a fair approximation of real war, and they do so slightly better in some ways than the turn-based strategies of old. And in someways they don't. But I think starcraft is a lot more fun than Shiloh.
1) most coutries would really F*cken like you to stay out of their wars.
2) Most of the world would appriciate if you'd stop giving money to "Some" of the world
3)The world doen't want to have any f*cken thing to do with the US but the US is intrusive, they rape coutries for resources and economically enslave the weak countries while telling the stronger coutries what to do.
Well they've kicked down your door, and their armed. Unless your a navy seal and constantly have a gun with you and have a shooting accuracy or more than 20%(the average of trained personel under stress) your dead. he'd get to u before you'd get to a gun. and if you had a gun on you you'd still miss him more often then not and again your dead. And chances are he'd sneak up on you with the knife instead of busting down your door and what could you do then?

Not a bad buisness model, except they dropped it after 8months and 6 games. there by alienating 60-80% of their user base and they never recovered from this. I know as a child about half of my friends had a sega and the other half had nintendo's. after the 32x 100% of us had a n64 and/or playstation but no one bought a saturn of a dreamcast because we all knew that sega would just rape our asses for money.

GenBank, the US DNA sequence repository, isn't at a tera byte yet. give it a year.
