No, I don't think that's it. I think FFX-2 was put out there to help calm the folks who didn't want to wait till FFXII but really didn't want to play FFXI Online. I really enjoyed the battle system in FFX-2, but was disappointed that so many of the backgrounds were recycled.

As for the sequels to VII: People have wanted one for a while. Then, added to that, was the response to the appearance of Cloud and Aeris in Kingdom Hearts. At that point, I think SE realized that they had to explore FFVII a bit more or risk alienating a ton of fans.

As for risk-taking: FFXI was a huge risk that has really paid off for them (the European service was just rolled out) and FFXII is supposedly going to feature quite a few changes that will continue to evolve the series.

I think SE are doing what any self-respecting company should do: find the popular product, continue to give the fans what they want, and continue evolving the product. If, at any point, SE releases an FF that just royally sucks (and I'm not talking mediocre, like some think of FFVIII and FFIX as being) then I'll be worried that they aren't pushing the envelope any longer...

  4. Re:Thank Apple Corp for iPods! on Beatles vs Apple · · Score: 1
No, no, no. Put on your thinking cap, son!

Apple problably could have steered clear of any lawsuits if they didn't set up the store. Apple Corps had no interest in Apple's move with the iPod.

Thus, considering that Jobs is a MASSIVE Beatles fan, they go to EMI and Apple Corps and ask if they can put the Beatles can go on the iTMS.

EMI defers to Apple Corps and Apple Corps says no. They also remind Apple about the 1991 agreement concerning the use of the Apple trademark and music.

At this point, Jobs could can the iTMS and never let it see the light of day. Or he could invite a lawsuit from Apple Corps.

Hmmmm... Apple Computer is sued by the Beatles. Sounds like a good headline. The Beatles could end up looking like the bad guys if they attack poor, little Apple. Thus, Apple Corps will want to settle - they won't want this to drag through the courts.

And what will happen in the settlement? Very possibly what Jobs wanted: The Beatles on the iTMS. Exclusively. Paul McCartney on the board? Even better.

Sometimes things are not what they seem. It's all a little dance right now. I don't see any true rancor on either side, which means this is all set for a settlement.

So, yes, Apple went through with the iTMS, knowing Apple Corps would evoke the 1991 agreement, so they could see what they could get out of Apple Corps.

(BTW, post #1000 for me. Whoo-hoo!)

Speaking as a Beatles fan and an Apple fan, I really don't think a settlement like the one described in the article would be a bad thing.

Paul McCartney on Apple's board? One of the biggest names in music history from the last 40 years on Apple's side? Not a bad idea, not a bad idea at all. Beatles tracks as iTunes exclusives? Definitely not a bad idea.

It comes down to the fact that Apple did break the agreement. They may have done it purposefully once they knew they weren't getting the Beatles' tracks on the iTMS - to see what they could get Apple Corps to do.

Even if Paul, Ringo and the estates of John and George got some shares out of the settlement I really don't think this would be a bad thing and it may actually help Apple move into the Sony-type space that Jobs has been positioning it to go to for a while.

Why? because I like the lack of cables across my desktop, the suite was cheap after a rebate, and I feel the need for a two-button mouse. I use the right mouse button and the scroll wheel on a regular basis. No, I do not need additional buttons beyond the two. But, that's me personally.

    2) I run a help desk with 40,000 folks to support. Very few know what the right mouse button is for. They know it's there. They know Apple mice are missing a button, but they don't know why that button might be important! I suspect the vast majority of people would be fine with one button since that's all they really know how to use...

Dark Empire, I think, lends itself to the idea of VII, VIII and IX. However, I think the best way to handle it is to abbreviate Thrawn trilogy and make it the source for one movie, "Dark Empire" another and then create a New Jedi Order-based movie for Episode IX. Keep in mind two things:

    1) Associated Press is a business. Reuters, for example, has its own style guide and it doesn not have to conform, in any way, to its competitor AP.

    2) It has also been tradition, from periodical to periodical, to allow for institutional style. The comma choices are one example, as many periodicals choose to list things in an "A, B and C" format, whereas traditional periodicals still prefer the traditional "A,B, and C." And then there are more formal choices such as, for example, The New York Times would run an article that read "Mr Cycline3's view is publishers should use the AP standard" as opposed to most other papers, Time, etc. that would read "Cycline3's view..."

It always comes down to the publisher and his or her choices for the periodical's style. While most may follow AP's style guide, there is nothing dictating that it has to be followed by all who publish.

Why should Apple support your external burner for software that either comes free on the machine, is a free download, or comes in a $49 bundle? They should only have to support Apple-configured boxes for the iApps and the OS. Resources cost money, and Apple can't go out and make sure each and every CD burner is supported by iTunes when they make no money on the app itself, can they? Apple is in business to make money, as much as we (and I'm including myself as I listen to my 40GB iPod and type on my iBook 500) might want to think it is some quasi-utopian company with each individual user's interests at heart.

Now, if they bought Toast and Jam, made Toast an entry-level, $49 app and then made Jam the more "Pro" level at $99 or so, they could recoup the costs it would take to make sure that the external burners work...

Apple buying Toast and Jam makes a ton of sense, especially if they bring the employees with them and make sure that the Adaptec/Roxio-era support of non-Apple burners continues. Makes a lot of business sense from here.
