I didn't like it in Windows 95, and didn't like it in Gnome either, when I gave it a try a few weeks ago. I tried really hard to like Gnome, but while there was some cool stuff I liked, it did a lot of stuff that was brain dead. One thing is how un-customizable it is. Can you turn off spatial browsing in Nautilus? I don't know, because after the first 30 minutes of searching for the option, I got tired of looking.
It's not that a web site owner shouldn't put up ads, it's that they shouldn't bitch when their ads get blocked. If this person wants to ensure that they're getting money from visitors, they should start charging for access. Otherwise, accept that people will block ads, grin, and pay your bills live everyone else does.
Yeah, if you run a high volume site like CNN.com, sure your hosting is a bit more expensive. I was referring to the people who put a simple web page that 20 people visit a month, yet the author feels the need to cover it with banners because the hosting is SOO expensive. I pay $25 a month and get 10 gigs of bandwidth and 1 gig of space, on a top notch provider. 10 gigs is PLENTY of transfer that will handle quite a few visitors.
If I'm maxxing out my 10 gigs a month, maybe my site is helpful and valuable to people and I could safely charge a bit for access? Or I could put a few banners up, but I shouldn't bitch when people don't want to see that shit and they set their browsers to block it. If I really wanted to ensure these people help pay the bills, I would charge for access, or I would shut the fuck up and pay the shit.
Really how do you want to pay for Internet content? There are costs for running a website. Servers, bandwidth, and time. How do you want to pay for those? Taxes? A system like the National Endowment for the Arts?
Or how about this novel, revolutionary idea- the person who OWNS the website pays the fucking bills. If I want a house, I have to pay the taxes keep it up. If I own a car, I have to spend money on fuel and maintenance. If I own a website, why am I expecting everyone else to pay for it? Good web hosting can be had for $10/month. TEN DOLLARS A MONTH. If you're too fucking poor to pay ten bucks a month, then maybe you shouldn't have a web site, or maybe you should get a free web host.
Sorry, he's right and you're wrong. If you want to post your views, do like everyone else and buy some fucking web space, and quit trying to get everyone else to pay for your shit. If you try to be a cheap ass and put ads all over your site, don't be surprised when I block them.
Um, I don't have cable. Neither do my neighbors, or their neighbors. Why? Because we live in one of the many areas of the U.S. where you can't get it. You do realize there are rural areas in the U.S., right?
how ridiculously unhealthy twelve years of getting up at around six in the morning, being forced to take part in things you don't at all enjoy, averaging four to five hours a night (in the later years, anyway)
I started to post a retort saying "you're kidding, yeah right, like the jury in ALABAMA would be so stupid" but then I stopped and thought about it for a second. Wait, they ARE pretty stupid.
Yeah, that's right, it's the fault of those damned "greedy corporations", and those loathsome wealthy first world nations. How dare we, given the same starting resources as everyone else, build a civilization full of people who can take care of themselves and technology to help in that regard? It's just not fair! Excuse me while I go suck on my mama's tit and cry in the corner about how unfair life is.
Who gives a fuck what they want? Seriously? If they can't figure out how to survive on their own without constantly being given billions of dollars in handouts, let 'em die.
It's time people realized that each man on this planet is responsible for his own life, and it's not up to us to feed him, take care of him, and make sure he's tucked in at night. If someone wants to help people out, great, more power to em- but don't expect everyone else to do it, too.
I'm curious. Would you feel any different if he had blinded the pilot of the plane carrying your mother, thus causing it to crash into the ground, burn, and spread little bits of charred gristle that were formerly parts of your mother over an area of about 5 square miles?
Or maybe you'd feel differently if you were a professional pilot, blinded by the laser, landed successfully, but were never able to work again for the rest of your life?
What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Did the plane crash? No. Was the pilot blinded? No. 25 years is a ridiculous length of time for somebody to stay in prison when nothing bad happened and there was no malicious intent to begin with.
I downloaded and installed the Gimp with an open mind and gave it a try. I had read so much on here from people saying it was good or it sucked, so I thought I'd try it myself.
My honest opinion, after spending a couple hours trying to wrangle with it, is that the interface just sucks. Things just aren't laid out logically like in Photoshop. And no, it's not that I'm "just used to Photoshop", because I hardly ever use any image editing programs.
When I first used Photoshop, I was not able to use it to its full capacity because I didn't know squat about such things as layers, channels, filters, and that sort of stuff- I had never used a serious graphics package before. But everything I did know how to use was placed in a logical manner, and it was generally easy to use. Not so with Gimp. I wrestled with it forever and still couldn't find out how to do everything I wanted to do. I know, that's what they make a manual for, but I should only need the manual to figure out the complex stuff, not the simplest stuff. Gimp was just frustrating, and I deleted it.
My experiences coincide with the grandparent. I'm the same way- I've used Windows for years, from 3.0 to 3.1, 3.11 WFW, 95, 98, NT 4 Server and Workstation, 2K Pro, and XP, and before that, I used DOS for years. I never have used antivirus software, firewalls, adaware, or anything like that. I think a few times I did install antivirus utilities, but got tired of them and deleted em (after having found no virii). I download shareware/freeware/warez. The only thing I ever got infected with was the Blaster worm and its variants one time, a year or two ago.
The difference between myself and the grandparent, and the people whose computers have slowed to halt from spyware is this, I'm guessing: we're good users who don't install bullshit, and who generally run a tight ship computer-wise.
I work at Sears, and the Christmas music is driving me mad too. It would be different if it weren't for that fact that 90% of it just SUCKS.
It's hard to describe using text, but these people take a normal, decent Christmas song like "Jingle Bells", and add all sorts of retarded, overdone vocal shit to it. You know those singers who try to sing like Usher, except instead they sound like cheap copycats who can't sing and are trying too hard? That's who's doing these songs.
It's the aural equivalent of a rusted out brown Pinto wagon with 13" chrome spinner hub caps, a 6" fart can exhaust tip, purple/silver tinted windows, bright green flames spraypainted on, and a huge quadruple-decker carbon fiber wing. Some people think the more glittery crap you bolt onto a car, the better it is. The same way with singing.
I'm tired of these legions of sound-alike, no talent hacks. Fortunately, whoever's choosing these songs is not *completely* devoid of taste, because occasionally a great song comes on. I always crack a smile whenever the "Peanuts" theme song comes on.:)
If the site is so great, why not charge subscriptions? If it's good, I'm sure 200 people would have no problem paying $1 a month to view it.
I don't understand this mentality. You people act like you should be able to run a web site and neither the owner nor the users should have to pay for it.
how does someone get modded to +5 by talking out of their ass?
You're new around here, aren't you?
n/t
Yes, because excluding gays and atheists from their organization is both honorable and good, right?
Yes.

Oh, you poor, poor child!
You know what you need? Some military experience.

What's wrong with that?
What if your girlfriend loves porn? ;)
Who moderated this Insightful?

Ever heard of a "laser level"?
Uh, yeah. And?
What could possibly happen to cause a failure of the bottle that wouldn't also annihilate the probe?
