Further, even if it was the area most likely to have impact, the people with the skills to pursue it aren't necessarily the same people with the skills to pursue better and more complete open mobile software, so it wouldn't be an real "either/or" situation, since the resources available for each effort aren't freely convertible.
You don't think those software people spending all that time and energy hacking into someone else's shit, couldn't instead better utilize their resources writing a new (and possibly better) implementation from scratch? Which they can have full ownership of and maintain, upgrade, and occasionally replace as the years go by, instead of always having to follow the manufacturer be three steps behind?
You're overgeneralizing. It's quite clear that in this specific instance, it is a much smarter allocation of scarce resources to a) develop ACTUAL open silicon, thus also building an owned ASSET (knowledge of how to produce said silicon, and improve/upgrade it and spin off as a business committed to your open ideals), or b) form some kind of an alliance with a company who is willing to supply you with open hardware, rather than the worse choice which is c) spending 10x the effort trying to hack into, understand, then duplicate (poorly) someone else's efforts.
As this continues, they will end up with a competitive advantage over the closed hardware, which will open, or perish. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.
Yeah, that's what they said about Linux too.
It is clear from a single glance at this web site that who's ever behind this effort doesn't have the first CLUE about anything except engineering. If I have to scroll and down your web page a few times and dig through four or five paragraphs just to figure out what your device IS, you are doomed. I still don't even know what it's GOOD for. And I'm an electronics technician, embedded programmer, etc...etc...etc! Marketing FAIL.
Yes, I am sure they are already aware of that clusterfuck failed attempt at producing an open phone. While OpenMoko was standing around holding their dicks, the rest of the industry moved in a completely different direction. I mean, take one look at the OpenMoko and tell me one person NOT fluent in any programming languages who would use that phone.
(especially given their general ineptitude, it'll probably be a naively-implemented MySQL database on an old P4
Apparently you are too familiar with how government ineptitude works. Most likely it'll be a naively-implemented MySQL database on a brand new sparkling 128 core supercomputer, bought and paid for by the persecuted.
By the time you get to the point where they'd put 10M names on the No Fly list, there will be MUCH more worse punishments ready and lined up for a good portion of those 10M. The No Fly list will then only be for low level people, like nobodies who criticize the government, not Somebodies who need to be Locked Away out of Sight and Punished.
You know, police officers used to be looked up to back in the day. Now they are just hired thugs to be feared. How big of a man do you have to be to intimidate and coerce a little girl? What a piece of shit
It does not matter to the Iran Government what happens to its people in the process, including perhaps allies deciding to wipe out Iran if Iran decides to use the bomb.
Right, because it's the Iranian government's fault that the United States and it's pals chose to place unwarranted embargoes on Iran, crippling its economy. If the U.S. attacks Iran, it will be because it was "forced" to (at gunpoint, apparently), not because it purposely decided to against all reasoning.
And depending on the area attacked by allies oil prices will be much much higher, if they could still use the oil.
Yes, high oil prices is totally the first thing I think of when I imagine the negative effects of blowing people's father's and sons limbs off, bombing homes and cities into rubble, and laying waste and death to a peaceful society.
The other problem with anyone who decides to attack Iran using the bomb is the fallout to surrounding countries
Right, because the fallout IN Iran isn't a problem at it.
Iran seems hell bent on building the bomb, and the embargo's do not seem to matter to them.
Right, refusing to capitulate to a bully's demands is the same as "not caring" if someone bullies you.
Attacking there nuclear hideouts, or facilities seems to be the only way to end it now or disrupt there plans..
False dichotomy because who the hell says we need to "end it now" or "disrupt there (sic) plans"?
WE DON'T. WE NEED TO START MINDING OUR OWN FUCKING BUSINESS.
Well... if it was an existential threat to their system, their power and even possibly their lives, they might well launch.
And wouldn't they have ever right to?
The Soviets had their empire, there was no need to nuke NATO unless something drastically changed, but be aware, at least some of the Soviet military leaders were known to have believed a nuclear war was winnable.
Just as many Americans also believed. Yet a nuclear war never did happen. Why is that?
Now take Iran, which is probably a lot less pragmatic than the Soviets were
Why? Because our government and their friends want you to believe so? Do you really think Ahmadinejad and the Ayatollahs have maintained control for so long by being stupid? Do you really think they want to "end it all" and be nuked into oblivion, which would be the clearly inevitable result of using a nuke against another country?
The problem is, the Iranian people don't have any practical control over their government at all. [...] In Iran, the government doesn't have checks and balances, it has a blank check to do whatever it wants, as long as the Supreme Leader signs it.
Just like the United States!
In the US, the President would likely be obeyed if he ordered a retaliatory launch, but if it was for something other than pure defense, he might well find himself disobeyed
Ever heard of "plausible deniability"? It's a product of U.S. politics! Of course the President can't just launch nukes at will. But if the missile detection system malfunctions, as it is later determined, signalling an incoming attack, and the President orders an all-out retaliatory strike based on this data......well, who can blame him right?
Not necessarily. Suppose Iran used a nuke against North Korea? Would the world approve or disapprove?
You're missing the point.
The point is:
Why in the world would Iran want to nuke anyone? It makes absolutely zero military sense Do you really think Ahmadinejad or the Ayatollahs are that stupid?
If you killed someone in your house and not alert authorities, then you are probably a murderer.
Of course the police are going to question you because there is a dead guy in your house that was shot and killed by you. Call the police, but don't talk without a lawyer.
What if the room where the armed robbery occurred is is filled with marijuana plants, ballasts, and bulbs, and soil?
Since I was a teenager, I thought of writing my own language that would pick bits I like out of each language and merge them. It would just create a hideous mess, of course, will be regarded by everyone else as a collation of the bad points of everything else.
Slightly off-subject, but I'd like to point out the key difference between your hypothetical "crap" language which never got created, and other crap languages which did get created and became useful.
Do you think the people who wrote Ruby, PHP, etc were able to do so by having an attitude of "I have some great ideas on how to make a good language, but meh, well, I'd do it but it'd probably turn out to be crap, and everybody would hate it and not want to use it"? Or do you think they said things more like "this might be a waste of time, but hell, what else am I gonna do? maybe I can have some fun with it."
Please do yourself, but especially the people around you a favor, man, and DROP this draining, negative attitude you carry around. You are (presently, not necessarily permanently) the black hole that people like me will engage warp engines to get away from at all costs. You can start by believing in your own self. Maybe you will weigh your options and in the end choose not to create your ideal language, but please at least believe that it's possible and that you could do it, if you really wanted to badly enough.
It's more understandable if you read it like it's a broken up radio transmission from Metro 2033. With a Russian accent of course.
the "enemy" is much smarter than 10000 bureaucrats [GARBLED] being sold by a used car salesman... [UNINTELLIGIBLE]... after all this decades enemy has sustained life for thousands of years in an environment most of our citizens would die in, in a matter of hours...[CRACKLE] they do have some tricks "up their sleeve"
Unfortunately there is little or no effort in trying to actually reduce the laws out there, because there is so much revenue is finding Law Breakers.
Now you see exactly why studies like this are coming out. OMG, using a smart phone is 10x more dangerous than DRUNK DRIVING!!11 OMFG. This TOTALLY explains the enormous, previously unexplainable increase in traffic deaths since the iPhone was introduced in 2007. Right?
MORE LAWS NEEDED NOW! And of course, you won't mind paying for the extra cops, extra courts and judges, extra prisons, extra clerks and janitors, extra credit card machines, and other capital needed to establish an efficient system for extracting taxe....er, "fines" out of you and your fellow citizens's pockets.
First they came for the speeders, and I said nothing because I obey the speed limit....
And a law would have absolutely zero effect on the problem of people driving stupid in parking lots, because traffic laws don't apply on private property.
While you may have a right to travel, there is no right to drive and there never will be.
No, this is bullshit. The right to travel implies the right to drive, especially since in today's world it is *necessary* for many people to survive. You can'tt outlaw making a living. Well at least not for long, until enough plebes see through your "privilege, not a right!!! lol!" brainwashing and decide they've had enough of the tyranny.
The odds of them losing their licence is almost nil so long as they don't drive drunk.
Really? Because I somehow managed to lose my license without driving drunk, recklessly, getting involved in any accidents, or harming anyone. My crime was offending the state's ego. It seems they take great offense to the idea that someone might be driving around out there when their license is suspended or revoked. This is such a horrible and dangerous crime, they tack on 6 months for each violation. There is no appeal, unless you can afford to a lawyer to sue the state to force them to give you one. There is no hardship license.
If you get caught in this legal trap with no escape, and live 15 miles outside of town with no friends or family to give you free rides to work every day....then you either a) break the law or b) starve to death.
Further, even if it was the area most likely to have impact, the people with the skills to pursue it aren't necessarily the same people with the skills to pursue better and more complete open mobile software, so it wouldn't be an real "either/or" situation, since the resources available for each effort aren't freely convertible.

Yeah, they got the gold mine, and the rest of us got the shaft
As this continues, they will end up with a competitive advantage over the closed hardware, which will open, or perish. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

I took offense at the fact that it was modded to +5 Informative,
Please get a life
However, I wouldn't assume that French support for the US rebellion was a matter of charity or pre-Revolutionary enlightenment.
And U.S. involvement in WW2 was?
Stupidly ironic because we're standing right now on the precipice of the Third World War.
