It's quite clear that in this specific instance, it is a much smarter allocation of scarce resources to a) develop ACTUAL open silicon, thus also building an owned ASSET (knowledge of how to produce said silicon, and improve/upgrade it and spin off as a business committed to your open ideals), or b) form some kind of an alliance with a company who is willing to supply you with open hardware, rather than the worse choice which is c) spending 10x the effort trying to hack into, understand, then duplicate (poorly) someone else's efforts.
As this continues, they will end up with a competitive advantage over the closed hardware, which will open, or perish. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

This is such a horrible and dangerous crime, they tack on 6 months for each violation. There is no appeal, unless you can afford to a lawyer to sue the state to force them to give you one. There is no hardship license.
If you get caught in this legal trap with no escape, and live 15 miles outside of town with no friends or family to give you free rides to work every day....then you either a) break the law or b) starve to death.
