    The AVR starter kit for $79 comes with an 8 bit processor, so I'm not sure you can take the AVR32 (a 32 bit processor) and expect it to work with the older board. I'm not a big micro-controller hobbiest/programmer, though. Would be nice if you could. :)

    Wow, that's a pretty good argument. I had no idea my point of view was so nuanced. Thanks for bringing this up, instead of creating a strawman or something, which you could have done. If more people communicated in such a dignified and respectful manner, we could accomplish so much more as a people.

    I'd guess a bunch of engineers/mechanics would get together and build one as a hobby, like people I know already that buy older cars for a couple hundred bucks and fix them up on weekends. I'm guessing if we were able to go around duplicating food and objects and such, we would have much more spare time, unless we all had to work to process and deliver the energy required to duplicate everything.

I'm envisioning someone huddled over the controls on their $70,000 147.1 X-TREME SURROUND(tm) system, manually adjusting over 600 level sliders until "Don't download this song" is played in such perfect harmony angels are envious of the orgasmic bliss they experience. Hopefully no one links to a 128 kbps version of "Amish Paradise" lest our heads exploded in fury.

    I think you're assuming a lot about the intentions of the people that created the crack. There are other motivating forces at work for would be crack providers, such as being, in principle, against having copy protection on a game you/they/someone bought. This is especially true for games protected by the more intrusive copy protection schemes (e.g. Starforce IIRC). Another major reason these groups provide cracks is for the fun and recognition of it, sort of like the "because it's there" mountain climber's rationale, which is completely unconcerned with how people actually use the crack.

    Whether or not you use them is up to you; I just have a problem assuming the only possible reason for creating cracks is to facilitate piracy.

    Or maybe the scientists know this idea is crap, but marketing caught wind of it after the one of the scientists that left to console himself with a beer accidentally left a memo from early on in the project, and started running down the street shouting "Eureka!" and calling press conferences, while HR is trying to figure out how many people they'll have to hire just to oversee the hiring of the people that will count all the money about to come in. This is approximately how things work at The Sharper Image.

    No one is claiming the fees are convenient; it's the service that provides convenience for a certain fee. Some companies are a little...optimistic in their claim that their fees are convenience fees, but this doesn't seem like one of them. Refilling a parking meter from half a mile away *is* pretty damn convenient.

    From what I remember, SQ4 was a real bitch to get running, even more so than the usual from Sierra. I've actually tried to get it running on a modern PC (Win2K a couple years ago), and while I think I got it running eventually it wasn't very stable.

    Just the first thing I thought of.

    Well, the median salary for San Francisco is only 60K(ish), and I know several recent college graduates that live in that area that only make a little more than half that (though they aren't programmers). So, depending on the level of experience the jobs grandparent was talking about ask for, less than 100K might not be a joke. Entry level doesn't typically pay enough to buy a house in most jobs; why should they for programmers?

    All In One Gestures (and other mouse gesture extensions) allow you to "duplicate tab," which opens a new tab with the same URL (and post data?) as the current one.

    I'm not sure if there's a way to do it through a single keyboard shortcut, but ctrl-L (go to location bar), ctrl-C, ctrl-T, ctrl-V is a workaround.
