The only chance we have is to all work together and propose some reasonable solutions and then play the politcal blow job game. Being that most of us are introverts I don't really see this as a likely scenario....I do hope however.

I would also like to add that the people we brag about getting code to run in sync with memeory rotation, or who inline SSE assembly instuctions, or what ever other truely geeky thing are the programmers that are truely doing it for the love of it and these are also the ones who will still have jobs after the outsourcing thingy reaches it's peak. Fact is there are great programmers, good programmers, ok programmers and shitty programmers. Great programmers will succeed. They will always require that extra control that a language like C will afford them. Perhaps languages will be divided into professional langauges (think NFL) and learning langauges (thing college).. who knows. I will never slight a Java programmer, because he may be ten times smarter than me or he may write certain apps faster than me. But when speed is king ( I develop comutational chemistry apps) I will always use C++ as I can get the security through the STL and I can optimize to my hearts content. Yes I have written several routines of inline assemble that take advantage of the SSE2 registers. No a compiler will never write assembly as good as I do....ok never is a really long time, but currently gcc doesn't even come close, nor does intel.

Now I have a question...because I honestly do not know. Is it possible to inline assemble with Java? I guess you would probably loose a lot of your cross platform stuff with it huh?

oh well just my two cents worth.

You make a very good point here. I guess if one follows the rabbit all the way down the hole then all software will be expected to be free. Then we would also have to expect that all corporations would fund the development of said software. Unfortunatly as soon as the corporate world has full control of software development then they will close the doors again...much as microsoft, Oracle and others did. I think that there needs to be a balance between free and commercial software. I personally see open source development as a sort of stepping stone to getting a job in the future. If any one actually thinks that OSS software will one day be the only option then I would have to disagree...of course I am quite often wrong, but I don't think that human nature is going to push people to develop what they dont get paid for....sure if the company is paying them to develop open source software then that is great, but as soon as the company quits then so does the software developer.
