Ah grasshoper it is time for you to unleash that inner geek. Think of the kernel recompile as a right of passage. After 7 years you cannot supress that inner geek any longer...you must bow to the recompile!!!
No I disagree. I person 1 vote is good. If cali and NY always out vote the little farming states and suddenly the cost of cotton goes through the roof then suddenly cali and NY will start to think just a little different. Why should someone in Mississippi (I am from Ms living in NY) have a larger vote than someone in NY. Is that NY person some how less of a person? I think that Americans are smart enough to know that you have to also think about the heart land as well as wall street....ok maybe I am nieve, but until it has been tried I think we should keep talking about it.
If you assume that we waltz in like we did in Vietnam then you are correct. Vietnam was not a result of our lack of military capability....but of politics gone very awry. And don't give me that bullshit about
"it is only because Iraq's military forces are so weak that we can even contemplate its invasion."
Why do you think they were so weak? Oh yeah go read your 11 year old history book and see what it says.
Do I think we can walk into N.K. like we did Bagdad? Not a chance. Do I think an unihibited U.S. military can take N.K. You better believe it. I don't think that anyone believes that Nuking another country into oblivion will make us safe. I also don't think you can call us a Nation of nukers...unless you refer to Wolrd War II in which we saved the worlds ass...oh and notice that the country we nuked...yeah we also came back in and built them into an economic super power. Bad stupid mean americans...allways bombing the little guy's and then re-building them...never sharing with the world. psft...
If I had mod points I would give you insightful...I get so sick of american school bashing....interesting that as a grad student we had plenty of indians and chinese both...hum what is wrong with their education systems.
People should quit bitching about what the average american is or isn't and focus more on what they are or aren't do....I have zero desire to be compared to the average anything...I am what I am.
I sure wish that I could argue with you, but you are right. I have been using Linux almost exlcusivly for about 6 years now. I watch others try and make the switch and they are just mad because something doesn't work the same way it does in windows. Well you know what...the problem is two fold.
1) It isn't windows, but people don't want to re-learn a software application that is only going to do exactly what the old software did...it is frustrating to them...hell it was frustrating to me at first.
2) We need something that is as the parent said entertainment based. Install linux and Bam. Java works, macromedia, flash, e-mail, internet, games, it all has to just work. No exceptions...no failures. It has to work the first time and everytime after that. No unsupported video formats, no unsupported video cards, All sound cards must work and all sound file formats must play. Installing something new has to be GUI based and it has to involve 1 click...do you want this feature...yes or no. Oh and it has to work...always without failure...no dependancy issues...they have to be resolved behond the scenes and they always have to work.
I love linux and open source software and could personly care less if Joe six pack ever uses it. But if we are going to have that discussion then we have to be honest. People will not put forth the effort to re-learn somthing unless it does something new and better....always without failure.
I am sure that the number of serious flaws at one time will never equal the number of serious flaws with say windows 95 or windows 3.1 or windows 98 for that matter. All softare has bugs...The biggest difference is that the open source community is just that...open. Thus many more bugs are discovered and then fixed as quickly as needed.
I would never claim that OSS is immune to bugs and virus writers and such...only that OSS is by nature more robust.
hum...very interesting theory. It wouldn't suprise me in the least...knowing how microsoft has played in the past.
Problem with them doing this is a lot of coporations use Unix based servers...there is no way that they are gonna just up and switch everything to the new windows based OS because microsoft decided to break compatability....no I suspect that micorsoft will initially make it backwards compatable They will fiercly defend patents they have on winFS so that an open source equivalent doesn't crop up...then they will slowly try to tstrangle the industry into using the new technology.
Of course I really have no clue what they are ultimately up to.
4 years without a release....I think they might still be number 1 but the distribution would be much more like 60:40 Linux is really gaining traction now....more so than ever before. Barely a day goes buy that I don't see linux in business week, CNBC, Wall Street Journal, etc....I mean this little guy is taking off with wings and people are noticing...I predict almost total server domination within 5 years as well as some descent in roads int the World (Not USA only) desk top market by then..perhaps 20%
lol Yeah and we only need what 640k of memory right? The key word you used being most...just like most people didn't chose cable or DSl when they first came out....but looking were we are today.
Well I can only comment about the company I work for. Anything that could potentially even help a competitor is a no no and would get you fired....yeah I know it blows...I hate it, but what is a person gonna do? I fear that many others companies are living in the dark ages just like the company I work for is. Perhaps some are not and I applaud those companies...perhaps someday the word will actaully find a way to compete and help at the same time.
Sorry dude but I have to agree with nanoGator on this one. you are just being nit picking....it was quite obvious that he was simply saying that microsoft was claiming somthing that was totallh impossible...plain and simple.
Campany A many want soultion B, but they are not gonna pay you to solve it say that their competitor (company C) can use it for free....this isn't star teck people. It is not human nature to live were everyone is equal.
While I agree with youI would be curious as to how yoy expect companies to sell more than 1 copy of their software if they give away the source. They have to be compensated for the R&D cost of building the project...I don't like the license scheme were are forced into...that is my biggest issue. Keep the source if you must be get over this one computer install crap.
"What if budding designers and contractors demostrated their skills by building free pubic buildings?"
While it would be nice. I think that if you look ust a tiny bit past the surface you will see that the monetary cost of a building is huge while the monetar cost of a software project is the cost of th e computer.
Interesting. Just goes to show you my knowledge of Java.
"In fact that would get me fired because nobody would be able to maintain it"
Not suprised....for the vast majority of applications this would be a big time no no. However I am lucky enough (ok so the geek inside is lucky enough) to have apps that demand the extra speed. Makes it hard for others to maintain...but then that also provides a degree of job security...if there is even such a thing as that any more.

Just my two cents worth
Suse = NOVEL

I would mod you insightful....if I had mod points.
I love your analogy about congress! lol...funny thing is they would probalby do it nust as well.

Thanks for you insightful post.
very good point.
Couldn't agree more. People just want it to work...they don't care what software it is as long as it is exactly like the software the learned first
Interesting...after the first sentence I didn't even mention myself again....and I don't think that I ever implied 'people just need to learn'
Perhaps you should re-read what I said.

Just my worthless 2 cents.

Linux will never be as many flaws as there are with windows.
And like you said the one's that do crop up will be fixed literally overnight.

"after all, you can do the research yourself, get licensed, and mix the chemicals in your basement"
Not unless you want to violate boat loads of patents! Oh and probably go to jail for doing chemistry in your basement!

amen to that. I have been promised flying cars for 30 years now....where is my damned flying car!

Why not just get a flag that say's I am a moron and wave that you around you stupid fuck!
