    Actually I think everything will probably work out for the best. I mean it will be public knowledge which kernels are stable and which kernels are not. As others have posted distributions are free to choose which kernel they want. If they want ableeding edge unstable then many of us will chose another distribution. If in the end it results in one or two distributions then that was the market at work for you. Besides it is open source and anyone is free to make a new distribution any time they want. I honestly doubt that we will ever see less than say 50 distributions again.

    Normally I would say you need to respect IP, but if the doomsday scenario arrives and microsoft pulls this crap...I say fuck em. We just flat out ignore the law. Do you really think that they can put us all in jail? Fine us sure...but I ain't gonna pay. Somtimes situations call for radical reactions. There is a place for OSS and closed source software. No fanaticism in me. I do get irked when microsoft tries to limit us (the users) from begin able to set up say our own web server for free with apache as opposed to buying their crap as IIS server.

    You know fuck it I am just starting to get irate at this point...think I will just sign off for now.

    you say C++ has no api's...STL? Personally I don't want all the extra garbage that comes with Java...don't get me wrong I like the elegance of the language, but for what I do...scientific programming. Java just ain't the languace of choice..hell some of my co-workers give me hell for using a language as slow as C++...(fortran fans they are!)

    My only point is that C++ and Java are both very good language in the right circumstance...you want to write business apps...use Java...however the finacial world still considers C+ the end all be all.

    However ifyou want to write fast code...with inline assembly in those tight loops...use C/C++. Period.

    I love Window Maker as well. As far as being faster than windows...I certainly experience it. In my experience windows is prone to random slow downs...to a crawl in fact. Where as Linux is a true multitasking OS and windows is not...this is probably the main reason. It should also be noted that when many off us talk about speed we are refering to linux the kernel...and It is bunches faster. Place a windows box running IIS or appache and a linux box running apache and then compare the two again....as a desktop...with KDE. You are right it probably ain't much faster...but it never hangs.

    My friend that is why we got our PhD's....so that we wouldn't have to work the help desk....oh and grasp this one....we actually love the research.

    In my view all a PhD does is provide a tangible peice of proof that the person in question is able to research out a topic and explore it completely....can it be done without a PhD...hell yes. Can you learn to code a comptuer without going to college...hell yes....but that CS degree sure helps those that would hire you to know that you can do what you say you can!

    Well I can HONESTLY say that winXp sucks too. It may not crash fully every 10 minutes, but it often slows down to the point were no other apps run...can way say multi tasking!

    You know what I hate is when people like you try to point out all the good crap with winXP....tell you what, you give me 56 billion in cash and I will build you an OS that rocks the pants off windoze. It is a cheap ass lame OS. It has not changed that much since win 95. It was crap then...It is crap now. take away all the applications that run and windows and you have a heaping pile of dog crap.

    Microsoft has zero desire to push the limits of computer and information technology. if it did then it could ceternly do it with that kind of cash. Microsoft exsists for one purpose and one purpose only....to build wealth for it's share holds. Thats it. Nothing more nothing less.

    Take the group of microsft employes and give then 56 billion to work with and dream with and I gaurantee you that they could build something total awsome. MS has great programmers...always has...but if the powers that be don't let you fight the war the right way then you lose every time....I would be willing to be that moral is dropping at the redmond campus.

    fsck em. They reinvented the rules of the game for themselves thereby putting lots of companies out of business and now the OSS movement is reinventing the rules of the game on them. They can either help contribute to the rules and survive...or fight the rules and take their chances on domination or extinction. I think that windoze will ultimatly...many many years to come go the way of the dodo bird.

Being that by law people in this country (USA) must complete some level of schooling....now what percentage of people in China or India cannot read? hum....sounds like someone should go and looks some facts up before they spout off. Americas biggest problem with education is due to holding back of students who excell to wait on those who do not....IMHO
