I bought it because I like Scalzi's writing, it was new at the time, and I was going on vacation. I've read all the Old Man War books except for Zoe's Tale and liked them very much. I also read some of his earlier books like Agent to the Stars which I thought was excellent and Android's Dream which was meh.
The math absolutely adds up. Saving something is always better than saving nothing. Why is it that you think if a person's savings can't pay it off completely that their saving anything was a worthless endeavor? Whatever a person saves is less money they need to get from loans. How is that stupid, destructive, harmful. untrue, or unrealistic?
I thought the article said a person could toggle between first and third person. Wasn't that always the case in the Mech games? At least I think I recall that in MechWarrior Mercenaries.
You're not making a point. Can things occur that deplete savings? Of course. But that isn't an excuse not to save. Not saving at all and then getting an illness just makes everything that much worse.
When one has very little money as is, the consequences of poor life choices are greatly magnified. Unwed teen mom from a middle class family. That's not an insurmountable obstacle to a successful life. Unwed teen mom from the inner city? Different story.
Birth control in the USA is inaccessible? Where? Out of wedlock pregnancies seem to be most common in inner cities which seem to me to be awash in (largely free) birth control options.
College saving really should be a family affair. From the moment you are born, your parent or parents should be putting away something regularly. That something over the course of 18 years and coupled with one working themselves when they are of age should amount to a fair chunk of change.
If gun ownership in a society is as ubiquitous as in the United States then the police necessarily have to be at least as well armed and trained in military tactics.
Still seems like an f'd up situation. It's plausible to me that Martin was defending himself from the armed stranger following him, and then Zimmerman was defending himself from the situation he himself created. I don't feel much sympathy for Zimmerman and it seems shocking that there wasn't anything else he could have been tried and convicted on. He's innocent of the charges brought, but I don't find him innocent or blameless in this matter.
I'm wondering if it had anything to do with Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential ambitions. A similar thing happened where I am where the guy in charge of the state lottery spent a bunch of money on advertising and also happened to be running for governor.
I can definitely see Facebook disappearing. I've reached the point where the vast majority of my facebook friends aren't people I even remotely know. I've unsubscribed from everyone's newsfeed. Only thing I use it for is to RSVP for events and say "Happy birthday!" on people's birthdays.
Mod this guy up. I don't find there to be much variety in tablet/phone gaming at the moment. It's just many (mostly mediocre) variations on 2 or 3 different game types. I find this surprising since so many of the games that were on the Super Nintendo or Genesis would seem to work perfectly on such a platform (as they did on handhelds). Where are all the tile-based RPGs?
I just did that in fact. I'm not sure what I'm missing out on by having not installed Gapps. No Google+?

The reviews on Amazon made it seem mediocre at best. Really, there was no better science fiction this year?

I'm just saying that 6-8 don't describe the general causes of poverty. Not saying that don't occur at all for anyone.
Perhaps the pill. Condoms? No way. They are everywhere.

The laws vary from state to state. I'm pretty sure I had a part time job at 15. Possibly I needed a parent's permission.
Yes, it seems you took 2 minutes to think.
I'm not going to dispute that #5 is a problem. But 6-8 doesn't deal with reality.
To paraphrase Maximus, the things we do in life follow us around and perhaps even echo for all eternity.

The Pandora ads are obtrusive. Facebook ads are the same as web ads everywhere, easily ignored.

Why should this be any different?

You are now: drunk. Go home.

That will be awesome. A pint glass that displays FULL, HALF-FULL, EMPTY status. Two words: game changer.
Sharpreader
sharpreader.net
It's old and hasn't been updated in forever, but it's clean, simple, and fast. Faster than any other reader I've tried (such as RSS Owl or Liferea).
It's funny you mention those two examples. I was actually thinking of those.
