Must agree, I spent the weekend using a 33.6 modem on a P90 laptop and browsed the web. I didn't have problems on most sites, even used the chatspace java chat and experienced no slowdowns./. works fine and most others. Used IE 5, Netscape 3.04 Gold (thanks to JWZ), and K-Meleon. No problems. Flash = worthless content so normally don't visit those pages.
Dynabook? That was a PARC idea and like all of Xerox PARC's great ideas, they didn't capitalize on them. It took someone else to make that idea work.
Read "Fire in the Valley" for more info.
Actually Palm's first product was Grafitti for Newton. I have it running now on a MessagePad 120. A Newton with grafitti is far better IMHO than a Palm. We're just now starting to get a PDA that incorporates all that the Newton was. Pick one up on eBay $50 including a modem.
there are a few stories on the net about how Apple was funding BE for a few months earlier this year. They were looking at purchasing BE (and all of the former Apple employees who founded BE) but something hit a snag. One of the stories is at OS Opinion (don't worry it's not a goats.cx link)
But I suspect that a lot of people who try Linux are using an older PC that they got from the trash heap at work. That way they can experiment on a 2nd system and keep their precious new systems "clean".
I've tried to get Progeny going on about 6 different systems not one installed. I then took another Debian-based system, Stormix and got it going on the first install. Then I tried "pure" Debian and it installed with not problems as well. I went back to Stormix because I liked it better, sad thing is that they went out of business.
Sorry I must disagree. If he has an older system, the he might also have some older cards installed. RedHat found and setup all of the cards in my system on install. Found everything including an ancient ISA Intel Etherexpress. Mandrake and most of the others require insmod and other commands to install the modules to load the card. I think RedHat would be better for a beginner. A newbie might be discouraged because they don't know the commands. Yes it is dumbing down Linux, but for Linux to be the "Desktop OS", then some sacrifices need to be made.
For the record, I use Debian.

If that's what you want then buy it, but the typical mac user doesn't care. I've seen more and more people buy TiBooks than Dells recently, simply because of the "fashion statement". It's the reason why people go to Bannana Republic instead of Wal-Mart.
I use both PC and Macs, I don't care about games, I just want a nice graphics editor, word processor, and browser. If I sit down at a computer I want to be able to use it. That's pretty much a preference.
It's not about worth it's about choice. Don't forget, that the Mac has the same marketshare as Linux too.
actually it was a great place to meet female aerobics instructors and lifeguards...after day it was a real party. No village people thing hapening, though.
I'm just a caveman. I fell on some ice and later got thawed out by some of your scientists. Your world frightens and confuses me! Sometimes the honking horns of your traffic make me want to get out of my BMW.. and run off into the hills, or wherever.. Sometimes when I get a message on my fax machine, I wonder: "Did little demons get inside and type it?" I don't know! My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts. But there is one thing I do know - you should take a little trip through your local K-Mart to find a cheap PDA if you need one that bad. Do you want it for the "wow factor" or just to brag about how l33t you are now that you have a PDA.
It's not that CP/M was stolen, but many key concepts were used in DOS. MS added to what they had received from Seattle Computer Company. The book "Fire in the Valley" can teach you about the whole story.
Teach them like you would any normal children. Trust me, I know, I worked in an inner city YMCA for years, setting up classes, taking trips, Director of summer day camps and after school programs. You just treat them with respect and don't talk to them like they are "poverty-stricken" and you will have a bunch of fun. Treat them like your giving them pity and your bound to fail.
I use blogger at mkelley dot net and like how I can set it up to use my existing hosting. It's just FTPs in. Blogger is one, if not the, largest blog communities. Web Techniques Mag is using it as well. Neat stuff.
It seems that Cingular is even less interested in customer service than bellsouth was. they've cut off my phone even after I paid the bill through their financial services. They didn't send me a bill for about 2 months, I ask for a copy of my statement and they would have the correct address but it wouldn't arrive. Then they wonder why I didn't pay. I gave up, got two T-shirts off of em, then canceled the same day and switched to Sprint.

Excape damn you! Get out of that tiny cubicle before you become part of it. Telecommute, go wireless, just do something other than Ask Slashdot.

I believe that there are some pagers, bluetooth maybe, that use 386s and possibly 486 in them.

I looked around and it all seems innocent enough. I can see that they might get disturbed that some site is questioning the term limits and such.
