I always wonder why companies who choose to try Linux always go for Star(open)office? AbiWord is a good word processor and can import word documents effortlessly. Has a familiar interface and can be use on anything from Linux to Windows to QNX to BE and OSX on the horizon.
If this survey was done with "random people" from a small town in Georgia (where I'm typing this now) around noon in a resturaunt frequented by elderly people they would jump on the "down with crypto" bandwagon. If you ask techies in San Francisco, they would say "no".
Surveys can be bent to say what you want them to say, you just have to pick the people. It's all about journalism, public relations, and downright trying to get visitors or sell papers. I've worked with enough survey companies to see how results can be skewed.
Let us also put this in perspective, Apple secretly funded Be for a few months. If Apple wanted a company like Be instead of SGI, what hope does SGI have?
No deathnails need to be prepaired, Apple has the same market share as Linux. Death, Taxes and Apple. Always gonna be here. They have gone through a lot worse and they always seem to bounce back.
I ran Win2k on a PPro 200 with 96mb of ram for well over a year and use it daily. Works great with PhotoShop. I don't play games, I work on websites with Dreamweaver & I use AbiWord for Word Processing. This isn't that much of a creeper. I just recenly upgraded to a 333 and it runs well.
AbiWord....it can import Word docs with no problems and has a Word-like interface. Average user wouldn't know the difference. And the best part is that it is available to Linux, Windows, QNX, BeOS, OSX.
Their story sounds like one out of "Fire In The Valley". Pretty much the story of dozens of computer companies. I think their path is more like Digital Research: hard partying CEO, Good Technology, Dumb Mistakes.

this is pretty sad, Bruce's comments rate only a 2 when the original parent got a 3...

Really! I've tried to get Progeny to run on my machine for the past few months. I got fed up so I found a Stormix ISO and installed it in about an hour. Progeny did not work. I've used RedHat, Debian, Storm, and SCO and I can get all of them to work, but Progeny just would not work.
1.)Your idea of peace loving is different than mine. The US isn't much better but it can be.
2.) "not the sort of comment i've come to expect at/. - Um. look around there are comments far worst than mine.
3.)It's called comedy, let me get the definition for you:
comedy (km-d)
n. pl. comedies
A dramatic work that is light and often humorous or satirical in tone and that usually contains a happy resolution of the thematic conflict.
The genre made up of such works.
A literary or cinematic work of a comic nature or that uses the themes or methods of comedy.
Popular entertainment composed of jokes, satire, or humorous performance.
The art of composing or performing comedy.
A humorous element of life or literature: the human comedy of political campaigns.
A humorous occurrence.
It was a joke in the same way we joke about the Brit's lack of dental care, the Irish drinking problems (I'm irish), and the same way the rest of the world mocks the US by acting like a big Texan. Do you get offended by Mike Meyer's "Dieter" character, who portrays all Germans as Artsy, Fetishistic, and Cold? Laugh, sometimes it's the only way to make it through the day.
And althought my note about the german phrase wasn't in the version on the site, That quote was from Zappa's Joe's Garage.

Just my $.02

That wasn't directed toward you, but toward the person who said that Win2k wouldn't boot on a 300. Sorry.
They have the same market share percentage that Linux has. Would you rather have a solid 5% or a weak 50% of users?
Let us also put this in perspective, Apple secretly funded Be for a few months. If Apple wanted a company like Be instead of SGI, what hope does SGI have?

I think most PR writers would be shiteing in their nickers if they had to smooth this over.
It's good to see that RMS is looking at this with an open mind...oh wait....nah...nevermind he fucked this one up too.

You don't know what you're talking about.
I think this was a way to avoid slashdotting the Mozilla server.
OpenDoc was part of the Pink project with IBM. I had an Opendoc Developer kit for OS/2 in 96'.

I found out later that evening that the collapses register about a 2.1 on the richter scale.
If anyone looks at this, how does this rate on the rictor (sp?) scale?
amen...
I have a copy of what CNN is running on their site with some information from Fox. mkelley.net. Please be gentle my server isn't that strong.

Hell I just now upgraded to a 333 with 128mb of ram. My machine runs great.

I was debating between the line I used and the sofa line.
It was a joke!!! Ha Ha! Nothing political about it.
/me now a target of political assignation becuase of a f***ing joke.
It is good to see, however, that Germans are very defensive about their country. The same way most would be....but we also can take a joke.
(for more German jokes, please see humor.org)
Thanks,
Shecky

Those wacky Germans and their world domination...didn't work the first two times so why should it work now?
Fick mich, du miserabler Hurensohn
Works fine if you're using Mozilla.
Um, I live in the city and still don't have access to Broadband. I'm in that section that is close but not close enough.
Check the stats of your local website, most people are surfing using 56k modems on IE.
