  1. Datacenter Perspective on Distributed Internet Backup System · · Score: 2, Interesting
I'm the system (NT network) and network admin for a small startup telco (CLEC). We also have a lot of data from our data processing of payphone records for the midwest region and yet more data for the litigation we go through to fight SBC.

I have about half a terabyte of sensitive, important data that needs to be backed up and stored securely offsite every day (This data is just the important stuff. No OS files, etc.) and archives of records stored on several CD-Rs that also need to be stored offsite. The only dependable(?) solution we can commit to is tape backup. We use an Exabyte EZ17 autoloader and Veritas Backup Exec.

You guys wouldn't believe the nightmares I've gone through to get it running smoothly and keeping it there. 5 or so replaced EZ17s, 50 $80 tapes replaced, hours upon hours spent on the phone with Veritas because their software is buggy as hell and their open file option is a piece of shit written by another company (Veritas support was the one to tell me that!). My boss seems to think that we're the only ones that have issues with backups (He's the type that has no opinions. He KNOWS everything.), but I've talked with other administrators with a lot of servers and data using a plethora (Three Amigos vocabulary) of various backup products. We all agreed that backups are a pain in the ass.

"I have a big comfy chair - a huge monitor and a very fast machine - in a room dedicated to computer gaming. I prefer this setup greatly over sitting on the floor in front of my TV."
Games are made for your console, so speed isn't an issue. I assume your TV is bigger than your monitor. Just move that big comfy chair into the living room in front of the TV. Problem Solved!

"my PC is just fine. and it serves a hell of a lot more functions than a console system."
That's great, but a PC does not replace a console. A console is meant to serve one main function: Gaming. There's no OS to deal with, no hardware upgrades to play the latest releases, no conflicts with Norton Utilities, etc. You just buy whatever game you want, stick it in the console, and play.

"Unless the system they are offering is $25.00 and I dont have to pay any sort of monthly access (like if it were to utilize my *exisiting* lan and broadband connection - without a large price for a lan adapter - i will continue to have no interest in console systems."
My Xbox came with an ethernet adapter and I play online on a regular basis (Halo mostly) for free using Xbox Connect. It basically creates a network tunnel between the computers, fooling Xboxes into seeing each other under system link. For $50, you can play all those Live games with voice support which you have to experience to understand how much fun it is. Definitely worth the $50.

"What they should do is focus on making a PCI card that you can insert into your PC and utilize its hardware to make it a 'console' system in that it can hold the controllers and play all the games - for a minimal cost.
They were thinking about doing this with another console. I forget which one, but I believe it was the Dreamcast. I think it's an idea worth exploring, but it definitely shouldn't be their primary focus. Most people are afraid of the buttons on their DVD/VCR remote control. They're not going to buy a product that requires opening their computers.

"then make all the money off the price of the games (which are already overpriced at $50.)"
Pass the crack pipe, please. Take a look at the cost of games on the PC. The cost of games are equal in the mainstream retail market and you can find bargains for both kinds of games through pricewatch, ebay, etc. Personally, I just rent my games and "back them up" to my 120GB drive that sits in my modded Xbox.

A pair of researchers in Naples, Italy, Graziano Fiorito and Pietro Scotto, used conventional means--food as a carrot, mild electric shock as the stick--to train a group of captive common octopuses to grab a red ball instead of a white one. The scientists then let untrained animals watch from adjoining tanks as their experienced confreres reached for red balls over and over. Thereafter, Fiorito and Scotto reported, most of the watchers, when offered a choice, pounced on red balls. In fact, they learned to do so more quickly than had the original group. The octopuses, according to the researchers, were doing something invertebrate had never been known to do before: learning by watching."

I think the problem is that Disney is a corporate empire that takes advantage of the public. The execs that drive this greed will all burn in Hell. Coca Cola and Oreo commercials are the same way! Until the average Joe stops watching TV, he/she will continue to be the target of shameless marketing that does anything it can get away with.
