This is one good thing about Apple. The functionality they sacrifice in the name of 'hip' simplicity leaves room for ambitious 3rd parties to fill the gaps. If they made their product truly functional to start with the ipod battery people would be out of work.
Perhaps that is how it is done in the US. In the developing world collecting and replanting seed is very common. Monsanto is often not making the terms of these deals clear to the farmers in these areas and then literally bullying them into paying more money each year. Monsanto is just wrong.
"Other than the post-modern preference to think that there is no deity who created, what objection is there to holding that as a theory?" I have no objetion to calling it a belief or a part of your faith. It is not scientific theory.
I'm not a biologist but I'll give it a shot. If we are able to understand how creatures evolve we may be better able to understand how the different species relate in the web of life. We are really just part of that web so this understanding could lead to an understanding of how our actions affect the web and us.
There is a major difference. The problems you point out with evolution came about via application of the scientific method. So we know there are problems with the current theory. We also know there are problems with Newtonian physics. Should we throw it out as well? Or is it still useful as a model as long as you know where the problems are?
Or, as people who push the ID would have us do, should we throw up our hands and say some deity did it? That makes a nice tidy package and we could go about the rest of our lives pretending that we understand the world around us, so I understand why some people find that tempting. I find it nothing less than contemptible to label it as science.
ID is not a theory and it should have no place in our schools. For something to be a scientific theory it needs to be subjectable to experimentation. It needs to be able to be proved wrong and the experiments need to be able to be reproduced by peers.
There is no way to rigorously apply the scientific method to ID so it will never be a scientific theory.

"Am I one of the only ones who prefers usability, stability, and performance... to eye candy?"
It isn't and either/or type of thing. You can have eye candy AND usability, stability and performance. Just ask any Apple nut. The first two don't conflict at all. Few will argue that OSX isn't usable or stable. Performance seems like it should but it doesn't. If you have the card and don't have the eye candy you've wasted your money on the card. If you have the card and HAVE the eye candy your system will run about as fast as if you didn't have the card and didn't have the eye candy. It's a wash.
Nobody (almost) will be buying the boxed copy to upgrade their old rickety system. Dell and friends will ship new systems with the OS and needed card preinstalled. So grandma can either use her old system that she has or she can use the new system. She will not need to go out and buy a new card.
What about the machines with onboard video? Dell will either not ship them or ship better onboard video.
Well, if you are still running NT4 it is because you have software on that system that you have not needed (or wanted (or been able to)) upgrade. My guess is that if you can get it to run on a Mac you should have switched years ago.
RTFQ. The article talks about a use. The grandparent was questioning that this may not be the best use. If the author is able to theorize about a use in clothing why not theorize about a truly useful use?
This is why I think Bush is a war criminal. It is difficult to find places where he literally lied. He worded his statements to give the impression that Saddam had a hand in 9/11 without literally saying it. To me, this is evidence that he directly and personally mislead us into an illegal and unnecessary war.
But I have to say it. Why is it that our media is able to get to the bottom of something like this and expose it as a hoax but can't do the same with bogus WMD claims maid by our government?
No, it just shows that Apple had a much smaller install base with few large corporate accounts to piss off. Don't get me wrong. I do applaud them for taking the more difficult road but backward compatibility is a much different issue for MS.
You do make a good case. But it's a two way street. MD5 and GPG are great for Linux but if Firefox wants to play in the MS world it should play by the MS standards.
When the Firefox warning dialog defaults to "Install" it is a Firefox problem. The weakest link in any security chain is almost always between the keyboard and the chair. MS FINALLY got this right in SP2 when they removed the default buttons from these dialogs so the user couldn't just hit return through them. It's just a dialog. Why does there need to be a default button?
Firefox is going to need more than one add in a regional paper to get the word out. When they come out with a U2 version complete with nauseating add campaign I'll agree you have a point.
I think you just brought the thread full circle. The MS firewall is intended for use by everyone and is on by default so it has to strike a different balance of function vs usability. Most people don't need (and would be annoyed by) the advanced features of ZA if they were in the MS firewall and would end up turning it off, which would defeat the purpose.

Perhaps not yet, but for something to be a theory it is more important that it be possible to prove it wrong than right.
/. that I think our schools must not be teaching kids what the scientific method IS anymore.
This is such a common misconception here on

You're right though. That would be the best of all possible worlds. (apologies to Voltaire) :)
Right. But you would be in the same boat. No support if something nasty happens and the OS needs an update.

But I just want to run Linux on it. Is there any way to get a refund or am I stuck paying the Apple tax?

Shrink that thing down into something gun shaped that makes a neat blaster sound when I fire it and you've got yourself a deal.
Dang. Guess I shouldn't have bought that policy.
You never know though.

So I have to keep checking for new versions of FF? Why don't they have an autoupdate feature so I know when important security fixes have been posted?
