    wait until M-Day, and the Iraqis will be sorry. Also, when the US/Alliance launch an offensive on W-Day, there'll be hell to pay. When S-Day rolls around, it'll be later this year, and things will have calmed a bit, however, when Y-Day comes, an escalation in attacks will occur...

    Who cares what day it is. We'll call it 'A(nother)- Day' during the War in Iraq, 2003.

    its funny that you should say this; for some reason the iraqis seem relatively quiet about the whole situation. anyone notice that they haven't got any of their migs in the air? why aren't they fighting back, offering atleast minimal resistance?

    on an unrelated note (to the above) and related to topic - those who think we should let languages die out, should be required to learn a second and third languages. After this experience, they who have learned(earned?) the gift of languages will wish for languages to endure.

    like anyone'e opinion/ideas on what may be done about the spam issue besides filters.

    all i did was register a new domain, run smtp/sendmail/squirrelmail from home (dsl connection). this really is a $40 solution, provided you already have the hardware (you have to pay for the domain).

    Make sure you don't give out your address too much, and spam becomes non-existent. if, and when you start receiving spam, turn on spam filters (they come with squirrelmail). if this fails, just change your email address, cause damn, you're running the server!

    Way better than paying too much for a book that wastes paper, and will likely be out of date in no time.

    the beautiful thing about books, especially if they have an underlying message, is that they will not be dated......

    if this book is what it promises to be, it could teach young sysadmins where-to and how-to check for web abnormalities, and web server security risks.

    just my 2cents.

    Your employer will want it, so their accountants can calculate your tax. Your doctor will probably want it,

    have you noticed that the above mentioned, are all *usually respected, or atleast somewhat trusted in the domain of life? ie - these people aren't going to write this number on a bathroom stall. They use it for legitimate purposes.

    Here, that number is used for the same purposes, including IncomeTax, Doctors, Banks - Loans, etc...

    Im sure, that even in the UK, if someone were to get a hold of your number, they could infact impersonate you. Maybe white-collar criminals don't exist in the UK, who knows. We do know that in the US, and in Canada, this thing happens (Social Insurance Number, or SIN in Canada). So, paranoia is paramount.

    Yet we accept new "global" CA's without blinking (or even knowing about it) each time we install a new version of Mozilla (or other browser). This is part of the critical trust infrastructure

    not only did this make me nervous, but at the same rate, scared. Accepting new 'global' CA's reminds me of Microsofts EULA, where they can change anything on a whim, cause hell, we accepted it (ofcourse, not us @ Slashdot, cause we use Linux). What if someone with an ulterior motive decides to change things, and redirect requests??

    This is certainly a good idea, but, certainly a cause for concern....or am I off base?

    Red Hat is only going to "support" releases for a year, and then orphan them. I think I might be able to get by by just manually updating the packages I'm worried about, like to fix a vuln I see listed on the web, etc

    I say use it till you cannot secure it anymore - - ie if you use it with servers, keep it till then. Your laptop is a great example as to why you could use it till your laptop dies....mainly because as a workstation, you have a lot less to worry about (ofcourse, this doesnt mean you don't have to secure your OS)...
    besides, a year is a long time in the computer industry....
