Right now the third largest employer of armed forces in Iraq (after the US and Britain)are private corporations
I saw this statement in a news story the other day and it still strikes me as highly bizarre. What else would be number 3? The US and Britain are the only countries with any significant troop presence. You have to have a number 3 somewhere, were you expecting it to be "Iraqi gun nuts"?
Let me see... ...Spain, Australia, Poland, Bulgaria, Japan and Italy. The Czech Republic has some military police in Iraq.
This could be useful for accident investigators. Some people may be carrying/wearing these things near the scene of an accident or crime and could be used to figure out what happened. They may have trouble in court unless you could prove that there was no tampering.
Unfortunatelly I haven't read the article because it won't load:(
I actually find it quite annoying because I've become used to clicking on the search item on the left-hand side of the screen. Now its on the right-hand side. ahh well.
If you search with multiple words then they are underlined like before, although on the right-hand side of the screen.

With the rapid depletion of old wood, it should be reserved for high-end furniture, instruments, etc.
I know this is a bit off-topic but still. IMHO it would be better if we, as a society used more wood and less plastic. Plastic comes from oil and this is not easily renewable (it takes a few million years). Wood is renewable, it can take ~20 years. If we only bought wood from renewable sources where they plant new trees after they chop old ones down then surelly we are having a positive impact on the environment as wood is a store of carbon. Wood holds carbon that would otherwise be in the atmosphere as Carbon Dioxide which is a major contributor to the green house affect.
I am not an environmentalist, but I don't see the problem with using wood, to me it has a positive affect so long as it is renewed.
myUS.com looks pricy, especially if you don't make many purchases due to the $132 annual subscription!!
The Rio Karma is more expensive here in the UK, so I found someone selling them brand-new on eBay who was prepared to ship to the UK. I bought a brand-new one including shipping for GBP198. They're about GBP269 + shipping here!
One big problem I can see is that it will affect your wrist movements making it uncomfortable to wear in every day use. A mobile phone (they're becoming more and more like PDAs) is a discreet device that you can hide in your pocket and doesn't look so 'weird'. I don't think this will take off. I don't think there will be a market for such a thing because people want to look good. Also this thing will be prone to getting scratched and damaged with everyday wear.
The worm overwrites data on the first few sectors of the victim's hard drive, making the machine virtually ubootable and potentially destroying much - if not all - of the victim's data.
Surelly you could still access the data and copy it onto another Hard disk, burn it to CD or copy it to a USB pen by running Knoppix.
A lot of swear filters on forums block or alter Scunthorpe, because it has the 'cunt' word in it. A year or two ago, the UK government installed an email filter, to prevent any sexually explicit language. This blocked anything about Scunthorpe so it had to be changed.
FYI: Scunthorpe is a town in the north-east of England.
y'know, if you're using Mozilla, you can just select an addy with the mouse and right-click on it to go there....
Mozilla 1.6 here, and the options I got were "copy", "select all", "web search for", and "view selection source".
I couldn't find it either. However, if you click on "web search for" then it will send it to Google which will provide you with a hyperlink. Geez, we really are lazy aren't we!!
It also suffered heavily from people cracking their set-top boxes. It was easy to do and many people were watching for free.
Also they made some bad business decisions, like buying the rights to 1st, 2nd and 3rd divsion (not premiership) football matches for a massive amount of money that they could not and would not recoup. They ended up going under and almost took the football clubs with them.
OT, but to all the UK readers Joel Vietch (of RatherGood.com) is doing some cartoons on Channel 4 in about 5 minutes (1.45am).

It will gain a quick injection of capital to speed up development of new ideas that are currently in the Lab stage.
Also, I think when Google started out, Venture Capatilists helped fund it and they probably want to cash in, and get themselves some booty. That is what they do, invest in something so that they can sell it at a profit later on.
Given compression rate possible with voice, a 1 minute recording is a bit under 1 MB.
Thats what I get with my mp3s and OGG files! I have a good quality void recording of a comedian. I've stored it on my hard drive using Speex, which is an OSS codec that's designed for speech. It takes up less than 346KB per minute of recording. This figure could be pushed even lower if you were recording from a telephone as sound quality wouldn't matter so much as it will already have been heavily compressed.
Freeplay are a company that specialise in wind-up electronic toys including a mobile phone charger.
I have this radio, designed by Freeplay that has a wind-up charger and solar panel. Works on FM, MW, SW and LW with a 30 station memory. Its not bad, works well and with good sound quality. It also doesn't look dorky like some of their earlier models.
It was proposed during the 70s to build a tidal dam across the severn estuary between England and Wales. This was rejected for economic reasons, but also met opposition from environmental groups concerend about fish migration. This dam would have produced 12% of the UK's electricity requirements, 8.6GW. Environmentalists are opposed to stuff like this. Source.
IMHO electric cars are a bad idea at the moment. I read a while back, I don't have the source, that the transmission of electricity from the burning of coal to the output from a charged battery is only something like 30%, wheras burning petrol or diesel is far more efficeint. However, if we become more reliant on renewable sources, then I guess this could be a good thing. Honda's Hybrid offerings are good, theres no doubt about that. But if you bought a diesel car you'd probably be producing fewer emissions as they are so efficient. I have a 10 year old diesel Ford Fiesta that gets ~55mpg on the motoway and ~35mpg around the town. The newest diesel offerings such as the Citroen C2 are even more efficient and unlike electric vehicles, they actually look good!
Did anyone else read the headline as 'Loud Metallica Noise Heard at ISS'?
seriously though, who would read past the first line if they were sent this written like it is..?
Tony Blair, Jose Maria Aznar and John Howard to name a few.

How about booting one of these off a CF card and running it as a silent Network based DivX player? No fans or hard-disk and it has a TV-Out! :D
*This isn't my idea. I just took it from Jonty, thanks mate.

Here's a Google cached Guardian report about ITV Digital's collapse.
Used Google cache because the Guardian require regsitration for their media section.

Perhaps someone should create one as a wiki. That way improvement can be added all the time by anyone.
