The simple fact is that, making your format open to anyone has consequences, one of them being integrators who do not correctly implement the standard you set forth. In other words, 3rd party software that can't read _your_ documents because of bugs / misapplications in _their_ code can, unfortunately sometimes be construed as being _your_ fault.
If that is the case, why doesn't Microsoft publish the XML schema and allow any other application to read and write to those XML files on the conditions that they fully implement the schema. AFAIK, this appears to be some kind of token gesture that Microsoft has carried out in order to sell their software to the government.
Wouldn't it be better then to have new, redesigned gas/petrol stations whereby you could drive your car over a platform and the battery pack would be swapped out for another one that is fully recharged. Your batteries would be held under the forecourt by this machine and get charged for the next 8 hours. Once fully charged they will be put in line for the next customer.
Of course this would require extra infrastructure and a standard (possible govement regulation required) battery size/connectors/power output.
Well, you can pay less for SMS. On Carphone Warehouses' Fresh mobile virtual network you can get SMS for 2.5p and 7.5p/minute to any UK mobile or landline at any time with no monthly tariff.
Yes, in fact some headphones have four wires: Ground, Left, Right and antenna. Just take a look at the plug to see how many seperate metalic blocks there are on the connector.
I used to use Mozilla, which successfully imported my Eudora mail. However, I now use Thunderbird but have not been successfull in automatically importing Mozilla mail into Thunderbird. I have manually transfered a few emails but not managed to do any kind of automatic import.
The wheels' centre of gravity is offset, so it is above the centre of the wheel. This means that as the wheel slowly rotates, its centre of gravity starts to fall whilst the tyre itself appears to climbs uphill.
Parent: "The most important parts of the world to focus on are: Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, South America and Canada."
That only leaves the USA which this article is largely about and Antarctica which AFAIK is owned by everyone and doesn't have its own government that may require Microsoft software.
As far as I understand, Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) will emit light from each pixel much like an LED does. This will not require a battery sucking back-light, and if necessary it would be easy to dim areas of the screen, just make parts of it darker/black and less/no light will be emitted from it.
This guy asked the Gnome developers to add a feature and he got the following response: "A feature will be implemented if and only if there is a developer who wants to implement it"
What is wrong with this response? He isn't paying them, they are developing Gnome because they feel pasionate about what they do. These developers are not his personal bitches, if he wants this feature he should do it himself or pay a developer to do it for him.
OK, everyone is complaining that this system doesn't make sense but lets break down what is going on.
Say I am bidding on an item and my maximum bid is £101. The auction is currently at $90. The auction has increments of £5.
Someone makes a bid of £100, my maximum bid is greater, but less than the increment so it is used. The auction now stands at £101.
I'm getting worried that I might loose the auction as its right on the max, so I increase my bid to £120.
Ebay then increases the current bidding to £105.
This seems to be what the lawsuit is about, ebay raising the current bidding, when you increase your maximum bid just because your original maximum bid fell between increment levels. In this case it fell between £100 and £105.
If I originally had bid £120, instead of £101 then when the other bidder placed a bid of £100, my bid would not have incremented to £101, but instead to £105 as that is the next incremental level.
If ebay is found to be at fault then they may have to set it so that you can only bid on the increment levels.
If ebay just change the system so that the current bidding price increases when you increase your bid then bots will probably be written to take advantage. They will just place a bid 1p above the next incremental level, if it fails then 1p above the next level. Keep going until you reach your maximum bid. In the case of the example auction that I highlited above the bid could save £4.99, so it would seem like a way of saving money.
If I turned up at a recording studio, a physics lab, movie preview, college lecture or a party with a laptop, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be laughed out of the shop.
What 'parties' do you go to where taking a laptop along is acceptable?
If you assumed that these people are fraudsters, you wouldn't waste your time filling out their form with dud information.
hmm, I often post plain text, but any hyperlinks are inserted automatically.

You can't modify the text if it is encrypted or compressed.
They'll probably develop a market for downloadable motorbike noises, much like the ringtones market.

I second that. I'll just add that when Firefox crashes it is usually due to some Java code.

This change happened weeks ago.
I submitted it as a story and it was rejected, hmmm.....

Thank-you for the torrent.
Its a shame that Slasdot won't set up torrents to video and then post them up automatically if the video server dies.
If you download the contraption.avi then read the credits.
Torrent that somebody else has already posted to contraption.avi
Mirrordot has a copy of the article here. The videos have also been mirrored and are flowing at a decent rate.

Sounds just like the UK.
Won't these problems be solved with OLEDs?

Parent is correct, although on some embedded systems it may be more important to have compact and efficient code but the compiler should do this.
I probably spend at least twice as long trying to understand what old (mostly uncommented) code currently does than actually fixing it.
