No. I refuse to call things gay names like "itanium". I'm sick of product names like "GeForce 256" and "Athlon". From now on, I'm going to call it by its codename: NV10 and K7.
Bah. Give me something harder than "GUI". But here goes:
GUI: Graphical User Interface. Rather than just using the computer monitor as a means of output, it becomes a source of input itself. Scrollbars and buttons, for example. API: Application Programming Interface. A bunch of functions available for use. (Motif, Win32, etc.)
OLE: This a Windows term. Stands for Object Linking Environment. Basically allows you to put different types of data in one place.. So... you could put a JPEG in your Word document, and now Word would have the menu of Image Composer. : )
FAT: File Allocation Table. This is a filesystem with 8.3 nomenclature. Can't handle over two gigs for a partition. Has large clusters (32k, I believe).
And stop being such an asshole -- It only takes about 15 seconds to tell someone: "Side with the label goes on top, metal part goes in first." THERE. That wasn't so hard, now was it? Now he/she knows. See? You must have been a really bad tech support person.
but seriously.. if dvorak keyboards help, then I say use them. but if you're like most people (learned to type on a qwerty), it might be hard for you to relearn how to type... especially if you're like, a unix greybeard and you remember when ARPAnet had 4 nodes (christmas 69 or 70, I do believe). I've never seen dvorak keyboards for sale..
Linux application support is very limited, meaning that customers end up having to build their own horizontal and vertical applications. A recent report from Forrester Research highlighted the fact that today 93 percent of enterprise ISVs develop applications for Windows NT, while only 13 percent develop for Linux.
if forrester research thinks unix is so bad, why are they looking for a web developer with experience with solaris? see for yourself.
Linux has not supported key security accreditation standards. Every member of the Windows NT family since Windows NT 3.5 has been evaluated at either a C2 level under the U.S. Government's evaluation process or at a C2-equivalent level under the British Government's ITSEC process. In contrast, no Linux products are listed on the U.S. Government's evaluated product list.
Windows NT *does* have a c2 rating, but.. things like having a floppy disk invalidates that.:)
I wouldn't call this a troll, I'd call it flaimbait, but whatever.
Stop sniping from the sidelines.
The open source community is just a gift culture that does this in their spare time. id software is composed of some of the most talented people in the industry, working hard full time. I don't think there's anyone working on Linux fulltime.
Most mac people use macs because they think Windows is too hard to get set up. They're proud not to know what an IRQ is. You think they give a shit if they can look at a bunch of gobbly gook (C code) that they don't understand? "Duh.. what's the () thingie for?"
Some people don't WANT to learn to program. They seriously want nothing to do with computers, except perhaps surf the Internet occasionally. Where they look at 'N Sync fan sites and Hanson webrings. My middle school was full of them. They haven't discovered Classy Pass.. Ahem..
And no, Linux will never ever ever ever ever take down the dominance of Windows in the desktop environment.
Please get help if you think otherwise.
You have to remember that many people can do little more than turn it on and click mouse buttons.
The open source movement is kind of cool for geeks, but it will never take down Windows.
In the server market, I don't know. It will probably grow in there.
But like, the common user wants to turn it on and have it work, not mess with configuration files (you think they're going to use console only? YEAH RIGHT) and log output of the X server to see what's going wrong. Hell, they probably wouldn't even want to run a configuration program (XF86Config) if they didn't absolutely have to.
All the power to linux, it is becoming less of a nerd OS. It is becoming more of a "power user" OS. And one thing.. WORK ON THE BLOODY TCP/IP KERNEL ALREADY!@#$%^!
and one last thing.. many open source advocates are really ssholes. I'm serious. one reviewer at arstechnica.com got an email saying,"if the cure to cancer were not 'open source' (?), then I'd rather have everyone die!". Umm. Okie dokie, then.
The whole point behind open source is so that you can make modifications to the program (or OS) and make it better. I wonder what percentage of the Linux user base has contributed to the kernel?
In many cases, open source is not necessary. If a text editor you are using does not have a certain feature, just find another one that does. It'd be a lot simpler than implementing what you wanted yourself. Oh, wait, I forgot, lots of Linux users are perfectly happy using an editor that has "insert mode" and "editing mode". How gay and unnecessary.
Yes, Anonymous Cowards can and do say whatever they want, but just because some has given a probably fake email address and has a handle, it doesn't make a difference. There's not really any more accountability.. What's the worst that can happen to the person? They aren't allowed to post on Slashdot anymore? Big deal. -Warren
socialism is so incredibly ridiculous. under socialism, you as a senior programmer would be payed the same as the janitor. yay! woooohooo. I want to get payed jack shit for busting my ass. freedom! yes.
Hmm. Having a 12 year old see Pulp Fiction, and having a 12 year old smoke a cigarette are two different things. Smoking is deadly, a movie might just scare you a little. But life goes on. That's a very bad analogy you've made.
a high school with less than average teaching personel (Columb^H^H^H^H^H^Hcity schools come to mind)
1) you can take high school as far as you want. you can sit back and learn jack shit except what it feels like to ruin your life by doing nothing (literally), or you can take it to the limit. it is the student's job to take the the teacher , not the class.
2)"city" school? are there any other kind? oh, I forgot, rural high schools where the graduating class is 2 inbred hicks and a goat.

He's this guy that broken into Yokazona Yankankuka's (or whatever that guy's name is) computer... He stole the source to the firmware in some cellphones, apparently he stole the source to Solaris 2.6 (a little later, the source was made available to colleges as a teaching tool), and some other stuff... he's basically an idiot who got caught. and the hacker community has blamed in upon the legal system that his lawyers are IDIOTS (they're payed for by selling bumper stickers that say 'free kevin', which are only bought by hacker wannabes).
