    This makes plenty of fscking sense when you remember that the company is large and only some of them are morons. Companies act a lot less monolithically than most people imagine.

    To adhere to Asimov's rules of robotics requires that the robot be capable of executing those instructions, and we're nowhere near having machines with the Artifical Intelligence necessary to do that.

    Manufacturing robots are sophisticated, but they're really more properly thought of as "Automatons" in this context, not robots in the Asmovian sense.

    Tragic that this fellow died, but no more of a failing than a farmhand who falls into a thresher.

    It does suggest that these industrial machines might have more safeties on them than they currently do, though.

    You're right that private insurance doesn't cover flood damage.

    You're wrong if you think that it's "complete nonsense" that private insurance companies will be writing billions of dollars in claims checks.

    There's a lot more going on here than just flood damage.

    You REALLY have to give a tip of the hat to the folks at UNC who've been doing this sort of work for YEARS.

    Their GRASP system was a force-feedback molecule-docking simulation driven by a motorized WALDO arm. Very impressive. Nice to see that others are following in their footsteps.

    Images don't resize with the browser.
    Images can't be selected and pasted as text.
    Images can't be read by external devices for accessibility purposes.

    There are huge tradeoffs to using images, which is why people keep trying to do find a real text based solution to the font problem. Images are just a hacky solution.

    "I do not think that word means what you think it means..."

    A Homonym is a word that *sounds* like another word, but has a different meaning. Bear and bare are homonyms. Their and They're. Too, to and two. You get the idea.

    "the same word that means different things" is called a homograph. Commonly we say that word as several meanings or senses.

    Lizards? OH! We used to DREAM of computing with lizards....

    Where I grew up there was 150 of us crammed into a cubicle in the middle of the road. We had to wake up at six in the morning, half an hour before we went to bed, and we were forced to do our computing by sucking on a damp cloth.

    Try to tell kids today that though, and they won't believe you.

    Stop, stop, stop, stop everyone, please, just stop trying to prove you can or can't make a computer for 100 bucks by looking up retail prices at your favorite pricegrabber site.

    RETAIL is NOT the point.

    The ONLY thing that matters is whether you can gather the parts for a WHOLESALE pricepoint where you can sell the box for 100 retail.

    Until someone starts posting bulk wholesale prices and then computes the cost of labor, none of the DIY lists are even remotely interesting.
