Hear, hear! The Dock is an abysmal waste of space that hasn't improved much in 7+ years, and the Finder is slow and doesn't handle network connections very well. That's FACT! And I'm an everyday Mac user (by choice).

Shakespeare is considered the initiator of modern English by most linguists. And the old canard about hillbillies in the mountains of Virginia speaking Elizabethan English is mostly bullshit. True, many sayings that fell out of favor in England (such as "I guess" to mean "I suppose") stayed in vogue in the US, but the similarities are far greater than the differences.

Truthfully, until the internet came along, we used to get most of our daily news filtered through some reporter and editor. Today, we can read the federal register, congressional web sites, get blogs from people in the middle of a war zone, and so on.

Most blogs are discussions about actual news items that were gathered by actual reporters. Bloggers do very little actual reporting and a lot of editorializing. Be careful what you wish for with regards to the media. I'm thankful every day that the British are smart enough to realize that news is a public resource, and they support it with their tax dollars.

Bill Gates (or more accurately, Bill Gates' rich parents) bought QDOS (quick and dirty operating system), a CP/M clone designed by Tim Paterson, for something like $10,000. Gates renamed it MS-DOS and convinced IBM to use it as the basis for their new home PC. That half-assed CP/M clone, limited even compared to the OSs of its day, was the basis of just about every MS OS until Win95. And if Gates' parents had never been rich, chances are this stuff would have never happened.

  21. Ratings deflation on Why Fear the End of the R-Rated Superhero Movie? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Well, there's no more R-rated superhero movies. But keep in mind that the Dark Knight, which has lots of sadistic violence, somehow got a PG-13. Violence which would have earned an "R" even 5 years ago is now PG-13 material. On the other hand, PG movies from the 70's and 80's featured brief nudity, which would earn an automatic "R" today.

Ratings change, there's no doubt about it. I'm not sure if this change was for the best, however...
