I guess you've never heard of homebrew gaming communities. The Jaguar, Playstation (1 & 2), and especially the Dreamcast have a sizeable amount of software written for them that didn't come from licensed developers. Are there lawyers running after the person who ported MAME to Dreamcast? Or the NetBSD team? Don't be a moron.

Maybe this is a different case because the guy is using an X Box developer kit and he must have signed licensing agreements with Microsoft. But for everyone else, homebrew developing is on the right side of the law.

As long as they aren't pirating games, I doubt very much if Microsoft cares if people are running MAME on the X Box. They don't care about profits at this stage; they just want you to buy it.

On the topic of the financial death sentence of the NC-17 rating - it boils down to what the customer wants.

Wrong. It boils down to a few people making heavy-handed decisions about distribution. Sorry, but if something gets an NC-17, that means Blockbuster and Hollywood won't carry it, as well as most major theater chains. That cuts out at least 80% of a potential audience for a movie, especially in rural areas.

Interestingly, the American public is apparently less interested in movies with "R" content than those with "G" content. This [dove.org] report shows that "G" rated movies make a 78% better ROI than "R" movies.

First of all, 65% of all movies released in the US get the "R". More movies equals more chances for failure. I won't debate that most of them are crap though.

"G" movies make up about 10% (or less) of movies released every year. Since they are all kiddie movies (besides the Straight Story, good movie BTW), they usually have tons of merchandise to help the make the big bucks.

However, financial success doesn't mean they are better movies. Pokemon? Those same movies that make billions here are direct-to-video in Japan. Disney? Sorry, they haven't made anything new since Aladdin. (Not to mention their excreble record as a corporate citizen).
You have stated that you use a website to find what movies are appropriate for you. Many religious groups have the same thing. I use Filthy myself (see link on my sig). Ratings are not necessary anymore.

Hollywood is more interested in doing a poor job of telling a story and livening up the movie with explosions, guns, and of course, bare breasts in sexual settings, than it is in making money.

I would say I agree with you, but it's the American obsession with these details that makes them a commodity. I think certain religious people hyping this stuff over the content of the movie are to blame, what do you think?

There are very few people happy with 100% of any society's unvoted moral code.

Moral code? I thought we were talking about movie ratings here. I suggest you read the parent post again, especially the part about the NC-17.

Despite the fact that NC-17 was created to separate porn movies (X) from movies with narrative, it is most commonly used to punish movies that have subject matter that the MPAA finds distasteful, especially low-budget and independent movies. Case in point: Orgazmo, a low-budget movie made by South Park creators Parker and Stone, received an NC-17 despite having no nudity (besides a few backsides that would have made the PG-13 cut). It dealt with a Mormon Pornstar Superhero, so it got the NC-17. MPAA would not return their phonecalls about how to cut it to get an "R".

Meanwhile, Saving Private Ryan, an "important" movie with Hollywood names and money, gets an R, despite being the most grotesque and violent movie I've ever seen. Since it's about war and sacrifice (Go America!), they play this movie uncut on network TV, FOR YOUR KIDS TO SEE. I don't know about you, but I'd much rather my kid saw Orgazmo than Saving Private Ryan.

Ratings are a tool for pretentious assholes to make sweeping cultural judgements. They are a convenient way for America to say, "Oh! I can let my child see this movie, because it doesn't say 'fuck'!"

If any ratings are necessary, they should be contextual-language, content, drug use. Normally movies shown on movie channels have these listed anyway? Why do we need the MPAA telling us what's good and what's bad? I have an idea, some people don't want to take responsibility for what heir children are exposed to...

Face it - SCEA and Nintendo America could really care less if there are really cool titles in the US.

This is one of the best arguments in favor of buying an X-Box I've heard. The Dreamcast is the only platform where publishers had the balls to release some of the way-out Japanese games in the US (Samba de Amigo, Bangaioh, Rival Schools etc).

The DC was doing very well in the US and Europe (sold more units on launch than the Saturn did in its entire run) but sales were sluggish in Japan.

Although the US and Europe were bringing in all the money, SEGA of Japan was very tight with SEGA of America's purse strings (they were only allowed to do big ad campaigns for 'major games' like Shenmue and Sonic Adventure 2.)

They also wasted a ton of money on licensing Ferarri F355 Challenge for the US market because it was a Yu Suzuki game, although it was such a rigid simulation it was doomed to failure in the US, and everyone knew it. Games like Jet Set Radio, Samba De Amigo, and Phantasy Star Online didn't get the ad space they needed to reach a respectable audience. AFAIK, the only reason SEGA's so chummy with Microso~1 is for free advertising.

So...I hate Microso~1, and I won't be buying an X-box, but it would be nice to have a competitor to Sony and Nintendo that would put pressure on Japanese companies to bring more games over.

The Utopia Bootloader (the original Dreamcast backup solution) was created by a group of hackers that ripped commercial games and posted them on USENET. They are not hardware compatible with standard DVD's, first of all none of the DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW or DVD-RAM drives are able to write two layer discs, then you have the added problem with the protection strips

The old Sega Saturn had a security track similar to these "protection strips" as well. It needed this, as Saturn games were all simple Mode1 CD-ROMs. As the game booted up, the Saturn would check the security track (burned on the very edge of the CD, and impossible to replicate on normal burners).

The hacker's solution to this was to muck with the Saturn BIOS so that it "forgot" to check the security track.

My point is, if the Gamecube's DVD-drive mechanism is a standard component (and doubtless it is, probably the same Matushita mechanism in Panasonic DVD players), HACKERS WILL FIND A WAY, whether it's to sell 1337 Gamecube games for $10 on their website or to backup that import game they paid $75 for.

It doesn't matter if the discs themselves use proprietary format, how they spin, or anything lik e that. Sega's Dreamcast used proprietary GD-ROMs that were uncopyable by normal CD-R drives, but since the drive mechanisms were standard Yamaha 12x CD-ROMs, CD-ROM booting was made possible.

The same thing will happen with the "closed" Gamecube, although undoubtedly the Xbox will be easier to hack.
