In other words, rewriting something like a TCP-IP stack is expensive.

The only reason rewriting takes place is to refactor functionality and extract a little bit of performance if possible. Rewritting is useful because it offers modularity and ease of maintenance, you can't plainly say no to rewrite.

But MS obviously took this task too lightly and didn't give it the importance it deserves. We could see the rebirth of 3rd party TCP-IP stacks for vista!! Anyone remember the Trumpet stack?

At the very minimum corporate users will wait until their lease expires on their Dells and then will see if they demand XP to be included in their new machines!!!

All perspectives work on the same document but each perspective highlights the propoerties of the things you want to focus on.

It might reflect how "immature" the programming profesion still is. The moment you have a larger team in software development you immediately have delays due to coordination among team members and problems with integrating components. You better make sure that everybody is on the same frequency so nobody steps on each other's toes and that scope creep is not allowed to run rampant.

Because software is something of a virtual product, people think that is very easy to make changes along the way. You wouldn't see an architect or a civil engineer accept fundamental changes to the design: "Oh how about moving the elevator shafts to the side and making space for a swimming pool on the 10th floor?"
