But why do those searches have to be implicit to your location. I hate it when software tries to tell me what is best for me. Why not give the user the option to make searches meaningful to your location when he/she checks a very clearly and visible checkbox. Show an obvious message or coloured frame indicating that those results are to be used for a particular geographic context.
Don't assume what the user wants... it never works.
I agree 100%. What seems to happen is for web owners and designers is to be a little more aware (i.e. less arrogant) of their user's needs and follow common accepted practices. Some of these recommendations have been around since the beginning of the internet.
American style management is not what business management is all about. Stomping, shouting and bullying seems to be the way out for many multinationals and apparently they think everybody must follow their example.
The demise of the CRIA is a similar example of how canadian recording labels were faced to follow american interests rather than representing canadian content and canadian artists.
You make it sound like Capitalism depends on how many ways you can screw your customers. What about value and trust?
If I only use a small set of functions from Oracle and I'm constantly left with the feeling that Oracle will not do anything to help me with my needs then I don't see anything wrong with choosing Postgres or SQLServer no matter how many technical advantages Oracle has.
Adblock allows you to block specific file types (i.e. gifs or flash) or you can block the hole site like a hosts file.
Sometimes you need the finer blocking because the original site you are viewing will also host it's own ads. This happens a lot with newspaper sites, you want to block their ads without blocking also the pictures related to a story you are reading.
Also the tool is integrated in Firefox so you don't have to switch applications or editors.
Once you start using it you'll notice that you can concentrate on what you're reading and when you read something without adblock you feel you want to cry.
I've tried UFile.ca for a couple years and it's been great. It's a web app, no software install. Of course you need a level of trust since everything is kept on their server. But if your taxes are trivial why not do it yourself and forget about Quicken, CanTax, H&R and all that crap.
That being said, if I were Microsoft I would not want to be in a 'commodity' market, where my product is seen like something indispensable but that can be easily replaced by the product of some other competitor(i.e. Ubuntu, iMac).
The grand parent is right though, Microsoft has a huge challenge ahead if they can't convince us that their newest OS is not that different from XP or even win98SE!
Better have those spare chairs handy for Steve just in case:-p
Unfortunately PCs now are appliances, if for your kitchen you buy a toaster and a coffee maker, for your home or office you make sure you buy a brand name PC.
The use of computers is not as challenging as it used to be. Now everything has a web address, everybody has an email and everywhere you see a business it's using a computer to keep track of things.
I would by a new coffee machine the moment I suspect my coffee tastes funny or the coffee stains are hard to clean. People will buy a new computer the moment they suspect their old PC is getting too old and their missing out on the new stuff.
I agree with you, I was commenting on the article and I wondered why hasn't there been more attacks to the corporations themselves (not just the poor employee that is powerless to make a change). I think it's never a good thing when you start pissing off your customers.
Amazon will have something to say to!!

Priceless... thank you!
So how would you manage this problem?
The idea is to provide more information to the user.
Well said, it sounds so simple but apparently it's really hard for MS to do.
I wish I could mod you up.
I have a Sandisk e130 and it just plugs to the USB port to be used like any other drive.
You then can drag over and remove the files you want.
What's missing on Sandisk players is a little improvement on their navigation menu and to be able to remember on what part of the song you stopped.

Well said. Is hard to valuate Google based on its current services alone, they have to "inspire us" to make us feel their influence.
I wish I had mod points.
I agree, a name geared toward a mostly male market should imply the size of their penis.
To say that you own a "Wii" sounds that it is rather teeny.
Paranoid much? I think the american congress has enough dangers with it's own politicians.
Like in gazillion?

1. Fix Word ...
2. Update IE
3. Redesign Control Panel
4. Update File Explorer
5.
Yes but, some of us need to make calls to the public telephone lines sometimes. What are skype's rates for that?

They are all intangible but somehow people can associate a premium to them (i.e. Lexus, Cadillac, Rolex, Luis Vouton(sp?) ).
But to accountants that all means overhead in trying to achieve it, I don't think that would ever change.

Actually that is available from my VOIP phone company here in BC, Canada.
It's simply another option added to their tech support menu.
Wow, ever thought of re-directing their anger to the CEOs and Managers who took the decision to outsource those jobs in the first place?
