  1. Re:Gaim on It's Time To Take Back Instant Messaging · · Score: 2, Interesting

How do you rationalize being invisible in your chat client as not "contributing" to the "network"? This is not bittorrent swarms we're talking about here. There are times when one does not want to shut down their client, and people do not always respect the BUSY status setting, so INVISIBLE is the quickest way to get a moment (or moments) of uninterrupted work. Instant messaging can be *extremely* intrusive, and for people who use it -- reluctantly -- (like me), the invisible setting is necessary to get a moments peace without having to shut down the app.

I guess I'm in awe of your comment because it just stikes me as silly that someone would complain about people having a choice regarding their IM status..and it appears to me that you are suggesting that those who run their IM clients in invisble mode are behaving somehow "unethically" or at the very least not being "polite".

While you may say: "Well just log out and leave your client running", that too is not as convenient, because maybe I am waiting for "Mary" to sign on, but I dont want to talk to "Phil" who likes to chit-chat too much. I can't see Mary log on without being logged on myself. Hence the need for "invisible".

    Opera Mini: HERE

You will need a Java Midlet Manager for PPC. I used the WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment, which worked very well for me. You can get it HERE. After going to that page, you will need to set up an account with IBM. On the download page, you will need to get "WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment 5.7.2 - MIDP 2.0 for Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition" (this works for Win Mobile 2003 1st edition as well, you should *NOT* grab the "Windows CE4.2/XScale" version as it does not include the .CABs you need, and does not run MIDlets properly).

Despite being Java-based, Opera Mini performs MUCH faster than Pocket IE and Minimo on my iPaq 5550 and also has a VERY cool method for scaling pages. Even Slashdot is usable at 240x320 using Opera Mini.

Running from a limited user account coupled with using a non-IE browser removes nearly every (current) major malware attack vector. Running under a limited user account can be a pain in the ass, but there are a few things to remember to help improve the experience:

    1. Some programs/shortcuts will not show "Run As..." in the context menu (for example: Control Panels). Try holding the shift key down when you right click. Viola! "Run As..." now show in the context menu.

    2. If you need to do "drag and drop operations" or manual editing of restricted areas (Program Files directory, Windows directory, etc...) you may have noticed that explorer.exe will not "Run As..." (even if you hold shift). The solution? Use IE. Run IE as admin, navigate to "C:", and now you have an instance if explorer.exe running as admin from within a LUA.

    3. When all else fails, you can always install pesky apps to your user space (C:\Documents and Settings\Username\). This is not the "safest" thing, but it is head and shoulders above running from an admin account.

I'm not sure how DVDshrink could output DivX and still be useable in a regular DVD deck (I'm aware of specialty DVD players that play back AVI, WMV, MOV, etc, but these players are not as common as your garden variety player).

Of course, maybe others out there use DVDshrink to output to media other than DVD-R, so I suppose DivX encoding would be useful to them.
