My current job is a direct result of Sarbanes-Oxley. The position (sysadmin) was opened up because the IT manager was the sysadmin, but because of SOX, had to take a "hands off" approach to the systems. This created a job position for me.
So, it's not *all* bad.;)
it's also nice because when engineers come over and say "Hey, I NEED to have root on that (production) box to test things because it's more convenient than working on it in the lab...." I can say "No. Sorry. Sarbanes-Oxley regulations. No root for you."
Well, they can always lobby for a "media tax" (like in Canada) to "support the artists" because blank media is used to "burn pirated material."
What a crock of bullshit that all is, but it's something that the RIAA would love to have in place. Imagine, giving them $$ everytime you buy a hard drive or blank CD, simply because you *might* use that media for pirated material. Oh, but even though you're paying for it, it's still illegal.
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) comes out this Friday, April 29th. It only ships on *DVD-ROM MEDIA* - if you want it on CD-ROM, you'll have to order the $9.99 CD-ROM set from Apple, and jump through a few other hoops (I don't remember what they are offhand)
If you don't want to wait, here's how to install it using Target Disk Mode. This will require *two* Macs, both equipped with Firewire.
* Take the Mac with the DVD-ROM drive (Mac #1) and insert the 10.4 DVD. * Power the non-DVD Mac off. * Plug the Firewire cable into Mac #2. * Plug the other end of the cable into Mac #1. * Boot Mac #2 with the letter "T" held down. Hold it down until you see the Firewire logo appear on the screen. * Wait a few seconds. Mac #2 will appear as a Firewire volume on the desktop of Mac #1.
The 10.4 DVD contains the 10.4 Installer - double click it, and it'll ask you to reboot. Go ahead and let it reboot. The installation procedure will be just like you were installing it on your local machine, but when it asks you which volume to install it onto, select the Firewire volume (Mac #2) and go from there. It's safe to have it reformat & install (unless you want to just do an "upgrade" which is rarely recommended.)
Once the installation is complete, it'll want you to reboot again. Go ahead and reboot. As soon as the machine powered off for the reboot, yank the Firewire cable out of both machines. Mac #2 will still have the Firewire logo, but that's ok. Just force reset it with the reset button. Mac #2 will boot up & walk you through the Mac OS X 10.4 setup assistant.
At this point, you're done. Software Update will run once you get to the desktop. Have fun!
(Hopefully this will stave off the "Wah, I don't have a DVD-ROM.. how can I pirate teh Tiger??" crowd.:P )
The MSN Search machines (at least at the data center down this direction... had a recent contract there) - all nice dual processor, ultra scsi Rackable Systems boxes.
Let me tell you, the blinkylite count was off the chart, and it was even better once we found the light switches in the data center!
"At the root of the issue appears to internet search results. Tiger Direct contends that Apple's use of the name has adversely affected its ranking amongst the Internet's largest search engines"
Suing a company because they've affected your Google ranking? Hrm. Guess they better hire one of those SEO firms to fix this.;)
what's the court going to do? tell Google/yahoo/etc to remove all references to "Tiger" just so Tiger Direct will get better search rankings?
I read an article recently about country music and file sharing. The country music crowd doesn't really think it's too big of a deal, and the Christian crowd apparantly feels that by file sharing Christian bands, they're merely spreading the word of The Lord.
I wish I was kidding, but I'm not. They're justifying piracy by saying it's how they spread the love of Jesus. heh.
Check out Concord, CA. Hispanic population has skyrocketed. White population has declined drastically. As a result? The city budget is out of whack, crime has gone up, social services are being taxed. Drive down Monument Blvd, what was once a nice area, and you'll find no less than 50-100 Mexicans standing around waiting for someone to pick them up, despite the "Do not pick up day laborers" signs all up & down the streets. At night, it's no longer safe to walk down the same street. This is a street where I'd run over to Jack In The Box with friends when I was a kid. Thanks to the Mexican gangs that have come into the area along with the growing Mexican population, it's dangerous to be out.
The schools have also suffered, thanks to the influx of non-English speaking families, and the Bush Administrations "No Child Left Behind" act.
The company-turned-spammers I worked for last year would happily plop down $$ to register 1500 domains at a time.
"Who has registered the most domains" is a completely worthless statistic especially considering how easy it is to do. It's a tax write-off for spammers.
Ah, a random spam references "indilatory.com" "provengoods.net" and "epispastic.com" - all domains registered for the sole purpose of spamming & "CAN-SPAM" compliance.
Uh, I'm not making anything up. You said "No, hotmail is not running on sun boxes using solaris or sendmail. It was running freebsd and qmail, until it was (mostly) upgraded to windows."
It hasn't been "mostly" upgraded (heh) to Windows on the backend. I'm not pretending Solaris was involved, it's a FACT, which you seem to want to dispute, despite having absolutely no proof whatsoever.
If you want to call places that run Solaris "old and out of touch" then go right ahead. I'm quite capable of rational thought. You're the one that is completely out of touch. Solaris is so "rarely used" that Slashdot was jumping all over the recent release of Solaris 10. Go ahead, go back and read the threads. you'll see how "rarely used" is it. Idiot.
begone, troll. I have better things to do with my time.
The A-380 is a ramp agent's worst nightmare. Ever worked at an airport? Being stuck in a cargo pit with bags rolling up a belt loader at you is like being stuck in a crazy real life Tetris game.:)
Although with widebody aircraft, bags usually get put into containers and loaded that way, but there's still a whole lot of freely loaded bulk stuff that goes on..
They can just buy a set of airstairs and dump people off on the ramp.;) Might be easier to get baggage out, too.. just push it out of the aircraft into a bin.
hey, it works for the dinky San Jose "International" Airport!;)
(j/k. They have an American Airlines 777 that lurks at one of the few actual jetways)
"No, hotmail is not running on sun boxes using solaris or sendmail. It was running freebsd and qmail, until it was (mostly) upgraded to windows."
Yes, it is. I hate to break it to you, but it is. There are Sun boxes everywhere. Most of the WebTV (MSNTV) infrastructure is also Sun/Solaris, although they are working to move that over to Windows. I just finished a 6 month contract with Microsoft at their nice shiny data center in San Jose.
Not one single FreeBSD box in the place. Actually, that's not true.. there are 6, but they're owned by the NSA and are in their own cage.
It's not reality that Solaris is "rarely used." Sorry dude, but you're just way out of touch.
Well, yeah, more places use Linux now, but that doesn't mean that Solaris is obsolete or "rarely used."
Sorry, but you're the one that's out of touch if you think that.
Did you know that the internal Hotmail infrastructure is all Sun boxes running Solaris & Sendmail? Many banks won't even touch Linux, and Solaris is still very much in control.
It pretty much biobild down to "the right tool for the job."
Generally, if I want a decent firewall, I go with Netscreen products.
One shop I worked in (Netscape) had tons of Sun gear, but the firewalls certainly weren't Cisco - they were Checkpoint FW-1 on the Nokia IPSO platform.
If it was ogg, it'd be an "oggcast"
;)
"podcast" was originally something to be listened to on your iPod. The iPod doesn't play ogg (by default)
"oggcast" would sound like a wild caveman anyway.

THey'd LOVE to have it both ways..
I posted this on LiveJournal too..

.Mac. You can easily bypass this step.
It doesn't make you choose

(Yes, I'm serious..)
Stupid "Burning Man" certainly isn't a holiday. Thank god. :)

Sounds pretty silly to me.
Classics? No way, dude! They just didn't have cool CGI back then. If they did, you know Casablanca would have become a wicked slasher flick. ;)

I no longer buy the 'they come here for a better life" crap. They flood here because the United States is a huge cash cow for them. Plain and simple.
Amen to that. I'd love to move to North Dakota, but the jobs just aren't there.
It does.. with kudzu on startup. It usually puts *too* much in..
And they might actually do something about it after a few weeks.
Been there, done that.. most of the registrars are the same in that regards. They *might* kill a spamvertized domain, but it often takes way too long.
Kind of. It's called Genkernel, and is in the installation docs. ;)
Yeah, that takes forever and a day. Overhead compartment space is usually inadequate, and people overpack.
;)
There are reasons that I spring for business class tickets when travelling overseas.

over 1700 piece of luggage.

Remember that little piece of software called SpamAssassin? And Vipul's Razor?
Both "bought up" by corporations, but the free versions are still very much alive and kicking.
At least these JasperSoft folks have tried to answer the obvious questions and they'd continue with the free version.
"Running solaris nowadays is rare enough"
Heh. Yeah, Solaris is *so* rare.
