I remember reading a rant posted on "whatshisnames" (Rasterman, perhaps?) web site about how much he hated North Carolina, but I don't think that has anything to do with the current state of E or its inclusion in GNOME.

The simple fact of the matter is that Helix probably uses Sawfish with their distribution of GNOME because of a few things:

    • Sawfish integrates MUCH better with GNOME. Using E, whenever I went to change things like window behavior, backgrounds, or themes, I never knew whether to change them in the GNOME control center or the E configuration tool. One of the settings would override the other and it seemed random to me.
    • From my personal experience, and I suspect many others, Sawfish is just so much more stable than E.
    • Sawfish seems to be worked on a lot more than E does. Does anyone hear about Enlightenment anymore?

I agree with you. I have a Geforce2 GTS and I am very happy with my purchase. My primary reason for choosing this card (it was Creative's card) is the support under Linux. It was the same reason I purchased Linksys network cards (they ship you the tulip module source!) and I bought an SB Live card.

One small point you didnt mention in your message is that you can find nvidia's driver developers on irc.openprojects.net in #nvidia. They and the other people in that channel have been very helpful to everyone who's visited from newbie to expert. They even have optimized drivers you can test out if you wish. Good group of people over there.

So everyone... support hardware vendors who make a real effort to support Linux and support it well. Companies like nVidia, Creative and Linksys need to be praised for their support of linux more so than other hardware vendors who just pay lipservice to it. Quit arguing over licenses and crap and just push them for quality, supported hardware and software, open or not.

This *will* happen though, though it will be Microsoft and UNIX (including Linux). OS/390, despite its strengths, will die. The bang for the buck just isnt there anymore. Commercial Unices have far surpassed it in that category, and Linux is catching up to them fast if it hasn't already.

For example, I work for a major futures and options exchange, and a increasing amount of our back-end stuff is running on UNIX (in our case, Solaris). All the new applications we write are UNIX-only on the backend.

The only major thing we use the mainframe for is for Clearing. The next version of our Clearing software is planned to be running on a UNIX cluster.

We use a Tandem for matching all the trades that come into the exchange. That system can be (and is planned to be) ported to UNIX!

Even though its been around longer than I have been alive, UNIX is the future. :-)

In an unrelated sidenote, I told my coworkers 2 months ago that within 2-3 years Sun would dump CDE in favor of GNOME as its desktop environment. You should have heard me shout in excitement when I saw this on /. this morning ;-)

And that was with the standard 0.9-4 drivers from nvidia's website. I went to irc.openprojects.net and talked to the guys in #nvidia and got drivers optimized for the PPro (or better) and got a 5-10% bump in 3d performance. (Using the mesa "gears" demo to measure)

And if it were up to me, teaching BASIC would be a criminal offense!!!! We could also save cash-starved school districts big bucks not going with the Micro$oft monopoly.

Anyway, children don't necessarily need to be programming computers at 6 years old, but when they are old enough (im not going to put a number there) they should learn a language that has structure and at least a vague real world use like C. Hell, I'd much rather see Pascal or FORTRAN used before one more child is stuck learning BASIC as their first computer language. At least those would teach concepts as basic as functions and put the child in a much better position to expand their programming skills. I unfortunately learned BASIC before anything else, and it was a pretty big leap to go to something like Pascal or C.
