That's a silly argument. The Prius (which I drive) is a better car than the BMW X5 I had before. It's more technologically advanced, more comfortable to drive, and yes, more ecological. Making the statement that the car doesn't help the environment ignores facts.

  7. Re:More tools on PSP Reception Lukewarm in US? · · Score: 1

PSPWare needs a few more features to make it great. First, it needs to convert AAC files to MP3s that the PSP can play. It already does this sort of conversion for movies, so adding music conversion should be fairly simple. It should also down-scale photos to the size of the PSP screen, and handle PNG files. (Right now images are copied full-size, and PNG files are not copied at all.)

Secondly, it needs to automatically convert movies, calculating the correct aspect ratio for the PSPs screen. I don't want to have to pick 4:3 or 16:9... I want it to handle other formats, letterboxing if necessary to properly present the movie.

That said, I also prefer PSPWare to iPSP. While the latter has nice movie support, converts music to MP3, and downscales images, it doesn't allow you to select playlists and albums to sync automatically.... rather, you have to 'copy' them one at a time to the PSP. This is very time-consuming. I.e., a pain in the ass.

I love this quote (from a linked article):

Back in 1988 Thompson was the GOP challenger to Reno for the district attorney's job in Dade County. Thompson's unique campaign message was that Reno was unfit for the job because, as a closeted lesbian with a drinking problem, she was great candidate for blackmail by the criminal element. Jack never explained why this remained a threat even after he exposed her "secret." Reno cruised at the polls.

  14. Re:will require larger Hard Drives.... on TiVo to support HDTV by "Year-End" · · Score: 1

Actually, for the DirecTivo unit, it will depend on the stream sent over the DirecTV satellite. The TiVo portion of the unit stores this (MPEG) stream without further manipulation.

This is why the DirecTivo unit is far superior to the Tivo stand-alone unit. In the stand-alone version, the signal is uncompressed to analog, then recompressed, resulting in a double lossage.

  16. I wish San Francisco had more CCTV on CCTV - The Fifth Utility · · Score: 1
San Francisco is one of the leading cities in the U.S. for victimless street crime. My neighborhood (within a few blocks of city hall) is covered with bits of broken glass from auto thefts. I envy Britain their CCTV system. I wish we had a similar system here. The fact is that when Britain started installing the CCTV system, crime fell by approximately 50%.

I think that the street is a public place, and 'loss of privacy' is an argument that only serves crimimals and paranoids.
