I don't really expect what I say to change anything, but you never know - if /. increases in popularity much further, less and less sites are going to be able to take the weight, and then they (the editors) might have to do something about it.

  4. Slashdottage Avoidance Stratagems on A High-School Hacker's Notebook · · Score: 1

How about /. serves different stories to different people depending on, say, a portion of their IP address?
In the next hour, the stories could be swapped around, spreading the /. community's attention over a longer period.
Or, Slashdot tips the site admin the nod 2 hours before the story goes live, to give them a chance to do load balancing, sign up to a non-free host etc.

A developer I know was writing documentation ('programming in word') and found that she had typed something like 'once this product has been vaselined'!
Turns out that the v and the b are next door to each other on the keyboard.
Similarly, I used to use int prefixes to identify integers and once came up with a funny when mistyping intCount by swapping the t and the c.

    Not quite.
There are plenty of things that come from China which are not that great (think skinning snakes in restaurants while they're still wriggling, drinking dog's blood etc.)

Anyway, this story is stating that the fish is disgusting, not China.

IMHO, the fish is not disgusting. It's l33t - it 0wn3d the USA's rivers.

This has to be the best way to save trees since eating beaver ;).

  8. You might also want to consider 'MyPhoto' on To Digitize or Not Digitize the Family Photo Album? · · Score: 1

I tried using gallery but I had issues with security on my host, 34sp.com (who are both top flight and dirt cheap. They also do PHP/MySQL hosting as standard). These issues were probably more to do with my own ignorance than any actual problems.

Instead I've been using MyPhoto, also available at sourceforge, and I have found it to be easier to configure than Gallery.

  9. Pool is easy on Augmented Reality Billiards · · Score: 1

You should try snooker. The table is much bigger, the balls are much smaller and you are more limited when it comes to choosing which ball to sink.

Still, the only way to get good at any billiards game is to misspend your youth.

There are plenty of high capacity MP3 players out there (Nomad, Terapin etc.) and a few medium capacity ones too (e.g. NEX II which is IBM Microdrive compatible).
Sure, it looks nice enough but when you can get a player with 20Gb of storage for less money, I can't see the attraction.

  13. Elite Clone for Palm on Old Games for PDAs? · · Score: 1

Check out Void, which is a clone of the old BBC Micro (and others) classic space-trading/flight sim Elite.

Elite was a ground breaking game that elegantly used the limited resources of early home computers to brilliant effect, creating an immersive world in line vector graphics and text menus. This economy of resources has allowed to gain new life.

On the Palm, it feels like coming home. Mmmmmm...
