No, that's not a surprise that they are suddenly in the market... but it is very important to hear that they aren't simply being laughed off. People are actually taking at the Xserve seriously, and this is encouraging.
I know people were intimidated by Japan's rise in the 80s, but this cartoon/propaganda actually portrayed them as _evil_, and that they would do anything to bring down the good ol' Americans. That seems especially overboard, you know?
Wow, I can't believe the bad guy really is Ninja-endo. And they are these evil Japanese-stereotype guys. I know Atari was desperate at this point, but... jeez. This propaganda was actually trying to imply that Nintendo was winning because they were evil foreigners who sabotaged Atari. Hilarious.
Thanks for the very entertaining link.

Yes, good and evil are opposites. So are good and bad. Would you agree that spammers are bad?
They aren't just exercising their rights to free speech and enterprise. They are actually taking advantage of a technology that is so new that there is no legal precendent for it yet.
I think the big issue is the color contrast moreso than the size, right?
Well, sure, that might be true. And maybe for eyesight-impaired a bigger button really wouldn't help much-- that was just a guess of course... but as for the kids thing, I still think the ability for a larger cursor would be useful.
Let me rephrase my first point then. There is no doubt, apple could make better product than what's on the market now and make it competitively priced. If that's not a reason to make a product, I don't know what is.
Okay, I follow. I still think that doesn't mean it would be at all successful or a good idea.
I thought OpenDoc was a groundbreaking idea, and that didn't go anywhere either because everything else surrounding it just wasn't conducive to its success. I think a handheld would be in a similar situation.
A PDA needs a good os, good applications AND a good physical shape much more than a PC. Apple is hands-down the best at this.
This first reason is a reason why you want Apple to make a PDA, not really a reason why Apple themselves would or should.
.Mac and the digital hub are crying out for way to TAKE your information with you. How awkward did Palms V5 look in the demonstration unvailing.Mac
I can listen to my MP3s and view my contacts in my iPod right now, and come September I'll have a calendar that will work with iCal as well. So I'd say carrying around is already possible (and there will probably be more features integrated).
It's F**ing hardware. I thought you ran a hardware company Jobs!
Yeah, and they don't make a calculator, garage door opener, or video camera either. They don't make all possible hardware (thankfully, or they would be gone by now).
Frankly I can't come up with a many good reasons not to.
How about because Palm is tanking and Steve Jobs specifically said it was a bad idea? =]
While I totally agree with the misuse of "affect", you're wrong about affect as a noun. Things can have an "affect", and it means "feeling" or "emotion". One place this is used is in psychology-- one can have a "flat affect" which is a manifestation of feeling that is incongruent with expressed feelings (which can occur in schizophrenia, for example).
So, they shouldn't have said "affect", although things can have an affect.
Because it is lossy in a different way. So maybe the ogg compression takes certain details from the original and loses others, in the end keeping the distortion minimal. But an MP3 has already taken away certain details (and not the same ones), and converting to OGG might bring out the imperfections, because it doesn't all mesh. You're taking away even more data. Probably depending on the song, it might or might not be noticeable. I've heard it isn't so good in this case.
Some places aren't big enough or wealthy enough to hire the best admin or even a full-time admin for their network. We all know that lots of networks are insecure and a lot of admins don't cut it, right? What do you think has a better chance of happening at this point:
1. All admins get their act together, and those who shouldn't be admins stop all activity, and small businesses that need new admins pool their funds and get one.
2. Programs with a more intuitive and user-friendly interface come about, making it easier for any person faced with the duty of setting up network stuff to at least have a basic setup without security holes.
What's the point of automatic transmission when all I have to do for manual is press the clutch and shift gears?
Some people don't have the time, patience, and/or skill to implement stuff like netware themselves in a convenient manner. What do you think about GUI wrappers for things that can be done in the CLI?
If you don't see the use of this, you aren't looking beyond your world, IMO.
I agree with you about this difficulty, and I run into that problem as a learner of German. But I just wanted to suggest looking for Italian-made movies rather than English language movies that have been dubbed. The selection is of course much more limited, but odds are if it has been brought over to region 1 then it will have an Italian soundtrack (maybe English too). Plus the dialogue is going to be a bit better if the movie is Italian originally.
Maybe you already do this but I just wanted to point it out. I've gotten a bunch of German movies this way. But I do agree with your point, because there are many movies that don't get brought over to region 1, and sometimes watching a dubbed American film is fun too.
You make a good point, and I must say, if I imagined Apple switching to a PC chip company, the thought of AMD sits much better with me. Also, I get the feeling that AMD is overall better quality than what Intel puts out.
Haven't heard any rumors about that though, surprisingly.
I think Apple is definitely positioning themselves to be capable of moving to Intel quickly if needed. But I have a feeling they will go IBM if at all possible. The PPC hardware is superior to Intel's hardware, and I think Apple wants to stick with this sign of quality.
Then if that falls through somehow, they'll be ready to move to Intel.
I don't exactly blame Apple for this. I mean, some people might perhaps consider it deceptive (if it is accurate), but the way Motorola has been dragging its feet for the past several years has put Apple in a really tough position. They can just barely get Motorola to squeeze out enough improvements that the hardware is usable. Everybody has been telling Apple they need to move to DDR, and meanwhile old man Motorola just lets Apple down again and again.
Maybe this move is hoping partly to twist Motorola's arm that this is how it's gonna be with RAM so they should get their act together?
I actually just hope that Apple ditches Motorola altogether and lets IBM do their thing.
This is a very good point. The reason there are such huge stars out there is a lot because of these big companies and everything getting consolidated.
A post-übercompany music industry will probably mean a lot more/better bands make it, but the definition of "making it" won't be so extreme, IMO.
Then why does Microsoft stuff look so damn ugly?
Well, that's a bit better. It would be pretty absurd to have a company put out that kind of blatant propaganda.

No, because if he owned the patent, obviously he would have permission to do it.

They work perfectly fine for me as well.

Beneficiaries that immediately spring to mind are children and vision-impaired.

Including the Sherlock problem. Now Sherlock is just for Internet services, and there is a compact, simple file finder that is separate.

Depends on your neighbors, I guess.
Not if the circle was big enough that the lawn would be inscribed within the circle. But you'd need fences or else it'll eat other lawns.
Already happening.

Just my feeling on it.
